Additionally, her designs and work with Quilts of Valor have been featured in Tex Appeal and The Killeen Daily Harold. Yet there is one aspect of orchestrating these beautiful custom quilts that Laura finds paramount to all else; she aids clients during times of mourning and loss.

Thursday, July 2, 2020, the lecture and PowerPoint on Zoom is titled “The Low Down on Leather.” Join Laura for a fascinating one hour lecture and trunk show as she gives you the “Low Down” on her newest adventure of quilting leather! Motivated by Cathy Wiggins, the developer of this incredible new movement within the quilting industry, Laura reveals what has transpired in her quilting world over the last year and a half. Combining her gift for quilting with the correct selection of leather weight and leather needle, Laura creates works of awe and wonder. After witnessing her amazing designs on leather you will quickly discover that quilting goes way beyond fabric! You can visit Laura’s website at https://www.qualityquiltsbylaura.com

Community Service –

Covers For Kids (CFK)

Melanie Reimann 1st VP - Community Service

Did you see the wonderful quilts made for Covers For Kids at our June 4, 2020 Guild meeting (on Zoom)? They were so colorful and creative. Thank you to everyone who has been working on CFK projects at home. We also take unfinished tops and blocks to use in our work for the kids. Rhonda and I will look forward to seeing them as soon as we can meet again. Hopefully, we will be able to provide lots of quilts for Ronald McDonald House, the Vogel Alcove, and The Dallas Advocacy Center in the future. The Covers for Kids Challenge deadline has been moved to December. So, you have six more months to create a quilt for a child using the “challenge” fabrics. If you want to participate, please email Rhonda Anderson ([email protected]) to receive a challenge packet by mail. Additional information can be found on the last page of this newsletter.

Barely Used Juki TL-2010q Sewing Machine For Sale!

I am selling my 2018 Juki TL 2010q sewing machine (purchased June 2018 from Amazon). It has recently been fully cleaned and serviced and has only been used to quilt one 85” x 85” quilt.

I am asking only $650 (although paid $1,081). This machine has generous harp space, while still enabling twisting and turning for complex shapes for applique quilting! It also comes with both the Juki walking foot and a Janome walking foot for better visibility.

Membership

Peggy Cord

I don’t know about ya’ll but I am hoping and praying we get to have a meeting in August. In the meantime I want to share with you some of the things I have heard quilters say lately:

• “I was excavating my closet today and I found this quilt top …” • “Do you remember when our group did that round robin border

exchange?” • “Way back we all did a cat block and we were all new to that iron on

facing.”

The Guild has a private Facebook page and we would all love to see some of the things that you have excavated or found during these stay at home days. Only current members may access the Facebook page after submitting a request. Please check it out and add your projects finished, unfinished, or especially those that you wish would disappear. We had a Zoom Guild meeting and it was quite fun. You get to “go into” somebody’s house.

Membership Renewal Peggy Cord

Membership Renewals Began June 1, 2020 The Guild fiscal year – and membership year – begins each year on September 1 and ends twelve months later on August 31. We began our membership renewal drive at the beginning of June. Since our membership drive is three months long, anyone who joins the Guild as a new member on or after June 1 gets “complimentary” membership during the remaining months of the Guild “year.” This also applies to former members who allowed their membership to lapse. Please take a moment to mark the age range box and also the volunteer area at the bottom. There are many ways to help the Guild and you may have an idea that has not been voiced before. Last year we did not print and mail the member directory but published it on the website. We will do that again this year. It is very, very helpful for the website manager to be able to download all the member information at one time! Please complete your membership form and remit payment by September 1, 2020. To do a “hard copy” renewal, use the form included on page 13 of this newsletter and mail it in with your dues by September 1, 2020. To do an easy-peasey online renewal (with PayPal!), go to the Guild website at www.quiltersguildofdallas.org and click on the “membership” tab in the horizontal menu.

LutDeMeulder6thVP–ShowChair

The Quilt Show is our biggest event and I’m so honored to be your chair for the next two years. I always enjoyed our show and admired all the beautiful quilts. Until you’ve been part of it you have no idea of the work being done! In these strange times I wonder if we will have a Quilt Show. We don’t know yet how or what it will look like, but we have to get ready. It seems like an eternity ago we had to pack up in a hurry. We had put so much effort in setting up the show and were ready to open. Thanks to Cindy’s leadership and calm we got through this. I have pretty big shoes to fill with my size 6 feet! It showed me what a great team is and that reassures me for 2021 and 2022. We will start preparing for the Show. The good thing is that this time cancelling wouldn’t come out of the blue. The show theme will be “My Travels.” You can make a quilt about a place you visited or want to visit, or with fabric you bought on a trip … the possibilities are endless! If you feel like being part of this great team, email me [email protected] We have a spot for you! We will start meeting from August on through Zoom or in person depending on the CDC guidelines at the Best Little Retreat Center, 7989 Beltline Road, #168, Dallas, TX 75248 at 7:00 p.m. on the following dates:

And if you missed the Beneath the Surface coral reef exhibit at the Texas Discovery Garden, it will open July 1, 2020 and be on display for several months at The Plano ArtCentre, 902 East 16th Street, Plano, TX 75074 www.artcentreofplano.org After being closed for three months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ArtCentre of Plano is thrilled to announce that it will re-open with an exhibition featuring the brilliant works of artists Christine and Keith Miller. Beneath the Surface: Reimagined will showcase from July 1 - September 26, 2020. This stunning exhibition will inspire and excite you. The Millers recently began a collaboration interpreting the underwater world of the coral reef. The installation is an advocacy exhibit bringing attention to the fragile state of the globe's coral reefs. Although this collaboration is new for the husband and wife team, Christine has exhibitions and artistic awards that stretch back to the 1990s. Christine is a life-long fiber artist with experience in weaving, sewing, basketry, embroidery, felting, dyeing, knitting, crochet, and fiber sculpture. She has led Weave with Wire workshops across the U.S., and is a nationally recognized visual arts education teacher with experience in Advanced Placement, Foundation, and ED art. To read more about Christine, go to her website at https://christinekmiller.com. Keith's 2D resin paintings create a watery world for Christine's 3D coral reef fiber sculptures to interact with. The pairing of the work reflects the organic nature of the sea and some of the forms that live beneath the surface. The dance of light, color, movement, and form captures the diversity and glory of the natural world. Keith Miller's works can be viewed online at https://www.keithmillerartist.com/home More details regarding the exhibition's opening will be posted on the ArtCentre's website at https://www.artcentreofplano.org

Basket Quilt from Oklahoma In February, several quilts in excellent condition came to the museum from a family who settled in Texas. Along with the quilts came information about the women who made the quilts. This month we focus on one that is cheerful and pretty, the Basket Quilt made circa 1950 by Mary Kathleen “Kathleen” Mathis Rolater (Mrs. Luther, b. Aug. 23, 1904, m. Nov. 9, 1922, d. May 22, 1996) in Oklahoma, possibly in Wewoka. The quilt was made from the fabric of dresses belonging to her 3 daughters: Marjorie, Drucilla, and Amaryllis.

She married Luther Rolater on November 9, 1922 and moved to Oklahoma where she resided for all but ten years of the rest of her life. Kathleen was interested in promoting the welfare of women and children. The family moved because of her husband’s work with Gulf Oil Pipeline, but Kathleen was active in Women’s Federated Clubs wherever she happened to be residing. Although the quilt was made of scraps from her daughter’s dresses, the Rolater family lived a comfortable lifestyle provided by Luther’s steady work for the Gulf Oil Pipeline. Luther and Kathleen survived the deaths of their two oldest daughters before them. Her youngest daughter, Amaryllis, married Texan James Tindall, Sr. a cotton broker. Amaryllis’ son and daughter-in-law donated the quilt to the Museum.

Those of us that are quilters know how vibrant and full of joy we are - despite the quilt police and our serious efforts to make everything on the quilt perfect. How fun to see this colorful image of the quilt maker in pretty surroundings as it helps to understand the cheerful colors of the quilt.
