Land Fill/ Compost Site and Gardening
Sitio New El Gawel, Koronadal City, South Cotabato
Introduction
Project Title Land Fill/ Compost Site and Gardening
Problem Statement New El Gawel is a sitio in barangay Saravia, City of Koronadal, South Cotabato. The community is home to mostly B’laan residents. New El Gawel is a small village of people under the leadership of a sitio leader. Community mapping was conducted last April 22, 2014 to locate the various places and landmarks present in the community. Environmental wise, most of the respondents are using uncovered containers for garbage/wastes. Most of the time it is eaten by stray dogs and causes mess in the surroundings because they don’t have land fill or compose site to throw the garbage. Respondents are not also fond of gardening although common of them do menial jobs at home
Community Needs There is a need to develop a regular compose site in order to maintain environmental sanitation. The community needs to utilize their land to create livelihood and sustainable income.
Objectives To improve environmental sanitation in the Sitio and avoid diseases particularly to their children and improve their livelihood through community gardening.
Solution Create regular landfill/compose site in identified areas inorder to be used by the community that is not to far from their area. Introduce community gardening to sustain their livelihood.
Output Create two compose sites in strategic location with the help of CENRO (City Environment Office). Visit the area every Saturday with the help of St. Alexius College NSTP students to help the community to cultivate gardens.
Outcome To improve environment sanitation in their surroundings and improve their livelihood.
Learned from: Dr. Sue Russell: Role of Youth in Environmental Sustainability and Stewardship
Dr. Rey Ty: Community Service and Volunteerism
Specifically about: Rural and Urban Pollution. There is a need for solid waste management as lack of garbage pickup and recycling contaminates rivers, sea and affects the health of the people in the community.
Conduct of Service Learning needs proper coordination and strategic planning.
How to applied in your project? Effective communication for community organizing must be applied. Awaken the consciousness of the youth to indulge in civic engagement.
How innovative is your project?
It employs new ways of thinking to attract the community particularly the youth to engage themselves in volunteerism free from prejudices and cultural biases to promote environmental awareness.
