Time for different but the same!

The Corvette hobby, like our club is

constantly changing. No matter what

you think you know, a year from

now that fact you were so sure of

could be blown right out of the water

by the most unassuming person on

the planet.

Don’t think I will host another trivia

night, and I know this may seem

hard to grasp but it’s true, I don’t

know everything about everything,

but I like learning. If I’m, as Ali calls

it, idle at home for about 10 minutes

or so, inevitably I will pick up a

Corvette magazine, I don’t really

enjoy reading but looking and

learning about cool Vettes and facts

interests me.

One of the things I learned about

was the existence of a ZL1, never

new they existed before, but after

reading an article in my idle time last

weekend I discovered in 1969 they

built two. The ZL1 all aluminium

engine option was the rarest and

most expensive engine option in GM

history.

These type of facts become very

useful at times, like whilst chatting

with people at conventions,

Lakeside or at our concourse. I

remember at our last show sparking

a discussion about cars in general

and Corvettes in particular with

some car nuts that rolled on for a

few minutes, culminating with me

opening the C5 door and letting their

girlfriends have a seat and followed

by a detailed rhapsody about the

Tiger Shark body kit. I was poised to

launch into a historical account of

the Corvette’s rise to stardom and

top it off with some clever and

humorous personal Corvette

anecdotes when I noticed the glazed

looks in their eyes and glancing at

their watches. I paused.

“So what do you have to do with this

club?” they asked, grateful for an

avenue of escape.

I told them with great pride, I am the

President of this wonderful club.

Then looking around at the success

of this, and every other event; the

organization; set up and abilities of

all involved; you too would be proud

to be associated.

So, speaking of being

involved….our Annual

General

Meeting is

nearly upon

us again -

August 3rd to

committee steps

down and a new

one is elected for

would be able to fill a position then

let me know and we can have prior

talks before the election if need be.

So whilst we don’t expect any

sweeping changes with a new

committee ie; same racehorse

different jockey, I’m just wondering

who is going to saddle up?

I have not looked at the “ Carsales”

website for some time. Last week I

decided to check out Corvettes for

sale. In Australia, there were 205

Corvettes for sale - quite amazing!

One of the bolts holding the inlet

manifold on my Vette always leaked

oil. I tried various types of washers,

to no avail. I mentioned this to Mike

Reptik. He said “oil comes up

through the thread”. I applied

plumber’s teflon tape on the thread -

no more leaks!

An irate member ‘phoned me last

week. He wanted to acquire an Etag

for his Corvette. Sounds simple! On

the website (govia) you select

vehicle brand (Chevrolet), then you

click “model” - guess what - no

Corvettes or Camaros. The choice

was quite large, including 14

Lamborghini models, 4 TVR models,

2 Tata models and 2 Simca models.

Now we all know that there are

more Corvettes than the

aforementioned cars! It seems that

the person responsible for the Govia

website does NOT like American

cars. If time permits, I will follow this

up.

Don’t rush to get LED stop and tail-

lights locally for your C1, C2 and

C3. I tried the new LED lights - the

result is worse. The specially

designed reflectors on Corvettes do

not allow the forward facing LEDs to

work efficiently. I think specially

made LEDs are available from USA

(for a small fortune!).

When servicing K&N filters, be sure

you do NOT over-oil the element.

Aside from restricting airflow,

excess oil can migrate into the

intake system where it can coat

electronic sensors. The result, of

course, can be disastrous. When

servicing the filter, if oil drips from it,

wash the filter and start over. Use

only K&N oil.

Do you have an impossible-to-find

whine coming from the underside of

your Corvette? Think about adding

a small amount of grease to the

splines on the transmission slip

yoke. This eliminates the metal-to-

metal contact from the splines in the

yoke to the splines on the output

shaft.

If you have driven on a flat tyre for a

short distance, never inflate it after it

has been removed! Let a tyre dealer

do this, as there can be quite

dangerous situations with the tyre

coming off at great force.

Quite a lot of C3s are being

imported into Australia now that the

dollar makes imports good value.

Check whether the brake calipers

have had stainless steel pistons

and sleeves inserted. If not, then

this is a must as original brake

calipers are guaranteed to leak.

When changing serpentine belts (in

C4s and later) count the number of

grooves. In some applications there

are several types of belts - some

have seven grooves and some

have eight. When you replace a

used belt put the used one

immediately in the rear hatch - you

just never know when it will be

needed!

Do you have a C4 with what

appears to be a fuel-related hard

start or lean condition? Have a fuel

sample test done to see if any

water has contaminated the fuel. If

so, check the rear fuel fill

compartment seal to see if the drain

is plugged. A clogged drain can

cause rain or car wash water to

back up into the fuel tank filler tube.

Use a fibre gasket because the

rubber gaskets stretch.

I often see Corvettes with the seal

missing between the radiator top

and the radiator frame or shroud.

This seal is important and ensures

ALL the air goes through the

radiator and NOT over the top. If

your Corvette overheats in slow

traffic - this missing seal could be

the problem.

BILLY & BARBY Fundraiser Saturday 23 July 2011 The Mount Silkorama Circuit at Bunya is proud to announce it will be hosting this yearʼs "Billy & Barby" derby for the Qld Corvette Club's Billy Cart challenge fundraiser. Saturday 23 July at 25 Weston Drive, Bunya is where the action will be from 11.00am. The Silks have the grass track strip laid out, Kev and myself have the plans drawn up for the billy cart manufacturing, Denise and Ali are working on costumes (Kev likes dressing up!) and all we need is you, your kids, an appetite for the BBQ and adventure. $20 for your family includes raffle tickets, entry into the Derby, all the day’s games and activities as well as (most importantly) your BBQ lunch. MERRY SKIDMAS Christmas in July Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 July 2011 This yearʼs Christmas in July is going to be held in Gympie, home of the Roadcraft Skidpan and Performax International. If we are going to Gympie, we might as well utilize both these companies, so Performax has kindly offered to sponsor our day at the Skidpan. Meeting at MacDonalds, Bryant Road, Loganholme for a brekky fix, then away by 8.30am. Meet the Northsiders at Shell Service Station, Nudgee Road, Nudgee and arrive in Gympie to play ‘skids’ all day. Overnight accommodation, traditional Christmas dinner (including Santa, Elf & presents) and full buffet breakfast has been arranged at the brand new Mary River Hotel. After breakfast, we’ll leave Gympie and head back home via Maleny for a walk, shopping and coffee. The cost should be $160 per person (twin share), depending on numbers, for skid pan, accommodation, Christmas dinner and buffet breakfast. Ali has pre-booked rooms and food to tempt those considering joining us. Details will be finalized next month. As this is one of our core events during the year, it would be great to have as many as possible join in. AMERICAN ICONS DAY Sunday 29 May 2011 15 Corvettes, a few Chevs and about 75 Harleys met at Morgan and Wacker (Newstead) for an 8.30am departure. The day was cloudy and looked like possible rain but this did not deter the cars and bikers. Just before the turn off to the old gateway road, Peter Turner’s ’69 Corvette blew a top radiator hose. This looked quite spectacular from 5 Corvettes behind him as there was a huge plume of steam - we all hoped it was NOT smoke. Three members stayed back to assist.

The first part of the run went on the “old Gympie Road” stopping at Beerwah State School for morning tea. For $6 each we were treated to a superb spread of fruit, cakes and assorted hot and cold nibbles provided by the P&C of the State School. The next part of the Run went through winding and very scenic back roads ending up near Gympie. Several members returned to Brisbane whilst the majority drove to Kin Kin- just a Pub and 2 shops. The “country Life” pub was well able to cater for the hungry hordes. The weather held for us, even though some patches of the road were wet. The H.O.G.S. group are to be commended for their organisational skills. There were 2 bikes stationed at every turn to ensure every one kept up with the group.

GENERAL BUSINESS John (Wheels) Webro asked anybody if they would like to come along in his car for this year’s Endeavour Rally. Leaves Goondiwindi on 11 July and after travelling some 5,000+ kilometres, finishes at Seaworld on July 21. Cost is between $1500 and $2,000 (all inclusive). The Raffle Queen, Susie Webro, made a special presentation to Glenn Miller of 2 pairs of thick sports socks for the colder months. He can wear them with his trusty Crocs and by the look of the pair he was wearing at the meeting, the gift came just in time! His trusty old pair have been destroyed with an angle grinder incident, so Peter offered to paint his new pair red also. So thoughtful! Nev Solomon reminded all Members that if they put their hand up to be a trip leader, that they must also organise a writeup and some photos of that Event. They don’t have to do it themselves, but need to delegate the jobs. Mike Gocs was nominated to write up the American Icon’s Day on Sunday 29 May. Keith Hosking informed the members that he has purchased another tablecloth from the Melbourne Convention, that we apparently decorated beyond saving, so I fear we may be gathering a Collection! Jaimes Pool reminded everyone of the upcoming AGM in August and asked people to start thinking of who can front the new Committee. Susie Webro also reminded members to PLEASE RSVP to Friday night dinners, as it was embarrassing at last month’s when extra people arrived with no seating available for them. EVENTS COORDINATOR

Need 10-15 people. 3 July – Independance Day at Lakeside. No tricarthalon this year, just straight 1/8 mile drag races. $20 Entry. Money by July meeting please. 10 July – Downunder’s Concourse at Chermside Shopping Centre. 14 August – Annual QCC Concourse at Broadwater Park Southport. Preparations are underway with hopes for a sunny day. Brad & Sally to meet with Camp Quality shortly to determine if they are doing the sausage sizzle this year. Peter showed us the great flyers his daughter Madison had put together and this will feature in next month’s Vetteletter. Could all members PLEASE contact any sponsors they may know, or try to get items for our Goody bags for the day. We are planning some entertainment for the day also, as the Science Fair has relocated. GCCC will allow us to rent the grounds at the Charity rates of $225, so this is great. Sally informed us Performax have already agreed to sponsor us for $700, so that is great news too. Peter asked John Webro if he could ask the Gold Coast Rockers to put on a display on the day. Good sound system is needed for the day.

Brad & Sally to meet with Camp Quality shortly to determine if they are doing the sausage sizzle this year. Peter showed us the great flyers his daughter Madison had put together and this will feature in next month’s Vetteletter. Could all members PLEASE contact any sponsors they may know, or try to get items for our Goody bags for the day. We are planning some entertainment for the day also, as the Science Fair has relocated. GCCC will allow us to rent the grounds at the Charity rates of $225, so this is great. Sally informed us Performax have already agreed to sponsor us for $700, so that is great news too. Peter asked John Webro if he could ask the Gold Coast Rockers to put on a display on the day. Good sound system is needed for the day.

FOR SALE L88 Engine $25,000 Block is a 512 casting, factory four bolt main block, dated May of 69. It is a fresh 30 over bore, it was magged, cleaned, decked, bored. It has a GM forged crank casting 6223, forged TRW pistons 11:1 part number 7223, also forged 7/16 dimple rods. It has all new bearings, rings, double roller timing chain, new oil pump and pick up (welded pickup), gaskets are all Fel pro. Intake is a GM Winters aluminium highrise manifold. Heads are open chamber rectangular port, GM aluminum 074 castings that were completely rebuilt with new SSTL light weight Manley valves 2.19 and 1.88 diameter with roller rockers. Cam is a comp cam part number 11-218-4 it is a solid lift cam with .561 lift. Lash is .022 on both intake and exhaust.

Putter around town, keeping its supercharged LS9 6.2L V8 below 3000 rpm and it’s as easy to drive as any sports car.
