-Gandhi
Quick Review
What is our identity affected by? What is Feminism? What is the difference between
spirituality and religion.
Hmmm. (do not write this!)
Now that we have talked about what makes you “you”.
Let’s talk about how these form into an ideology.
Ideologies
A system of thoughts based on beliefs and values shared among a large group of people and may then become an Ideology.
Well, this is the most common definition.
Ideologies
A systems that try to explain how the world works (or should).
How we should live together. How we should treat each other. Why we should, or should not, care
about others.
Themes of Ideology
Themes of Ideology
Ideologies can be based on Themes. These central themes are:
– Nation.– Religion.– Class.– Relationship to the environment.
Nation
Some ideologies reflect the beliefs and values associated with a country.
Or a group of people that see themselves as a nation. (common culture, history, language, customs, etc…)
Such as Francophone, Nazi, Communism.
Religion
Many ideologies are focus on Faith or adherence to a religion.
These are meant to give morals but often create conflict.
Protestant Vs. Catholic Muslim Vs. Jew
Class
What position you hold in Society. In North America this is commonly
determined by Position and Wealth. Working class, Middle Class, Upper
Class. Communism and Capitalism are based
around this.
Relationship to land
How we interact with the earth and the environment.
Think about Green movement and how this ideology is developing.
This is also a good example of how ideologies evolve.
Formation
Each ideology (be it environmentalism, communism, or feminism) started with a small group of people.
These people wanted to change, or alter, the world around us.
Formation
Once enough people have the same values and beliefs they form an ideology.
All Ideologies address:1. Interpretations of history.2. Beliefs about human nature.3. Beliefs about society.4. Visions for the future.
Interpretations of History
History is the story of how we got to where we are and what the world was like in the past.
Two people watching the same event will give two different stories.
Also, people interpret the past differently.
Napoleon said this!
History is a set of lies
agreed upon.
Let’s talk about this:
Have you ever felt Nostalgic?
Back to Notes! People interpret the past differently
depending on their personal values and beliefs.
A country will interpret it’s past in its favor.
The history books are written by the winners.
Beliefs about human nature
Do you ever wonder “how could someone do that to another person?”
People have always acted to extremes. People are always trying to help society
or hinder it.
Gandhi
Hitler
Beliefs about Society
All ideologies address the question of the nature of society?
Some societies are built on peace and good will while others are built on fear and tyranny.
This often is depicted as obedience by friendship of fear.
All societies must be based on an ideology.
An example
How do you see it?
Does the government have the right to tell you not to smoke?
Beliefs about the structure of Society
Society can be broken down in to 3 sections:– Informal Social Structures.– Economic Structures of Society.– Political Structures of Society.

Informal Social Structures Unwritten rules that are understood by
people who live in a society.
These change in many Societies.
These also change over time.
What are some of these?
Economic Structures
How we make our money and spend our money can tell a great deal about society.
Capitalist believe in the Free Market and that wages should be based on Supply and Demand.
People work hard because it results in more profit.
Economic Structures
Communist believe that all citizens are provided for.
Resources should be spread evenly across the population.
People work hard because they want no one to suffer and to be provided for.

Political Structures of Society
Roles in Society
Ideologies often address the role that an individual should play in Society.

Continued
Over the past centuries many people have thought about human nature.
These talks and ideas have led to the development of ideologies.
Plato believed
People could best help society in doing what they did best.
Builders should build. Farmers should farm. People are not equal in
ability, some are better at some things then others.
Your role was to be chosen by your abilities.
Thomas Hobbes English Philosopher. Lived during the English
Civil War, after which King Charles I was killed.
He felt this was very important.
He believed that people were very individualist.
Humans were characterized by fear, violence, and self-interest.
Hobbes People were only interested in their own
development. Would hurt any body that got in their way. People were not to be free but have
security. Hobbes felt that we needed a strong leader
such as a king, or a dictator. It is not possible to be free and safe.
John Locke
Much different from Hobbes. He lived during the enlightenment and
influenced ideas like the American revolution.
He felt that people were rational, intelligent, and reasonable.
He felt that we didn’t need a king or strong leader and that power was in the people.
Locke
Government existed only to ensure our safety.
People give up SOME freedom to live in a civil society.
All changes in government has to be approved by the majority.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau
People are good, but have been corrupted by society.
All man (people) are born free and equal. Social Classes had led to jealously and
greed. People should have the rights to choose
the life they want and the government they want.
JJ
He was strongly opposed to any leader with authority.
People should be led by a group of people from the community.
