National Costumes

Introduction
Estonian national costumes were ceremonial clothes for ancient Estonians. Today Estonian people wear national costumes at dance and song festivals.
Costumes
In every county there are a little bit different costumes. Men wore a coat, knee breeches, special footwear and bobby-socks. National costumes divided people in classes.
South-Estonian national costumes
These costumes characterise many old national costumes that have survived centuries. Setumaa distinguishes especially well.
North-Estonian national costumes
• There were more fashionable clothes than in the other counties. Men had knee breeches and a special coat. Women had striped skirts and a white blouse.
Brooch
• According to old traditions when baby was born then she or he had brooches on her or his first costumes. They wore it on the neckpiece. All brooches cover up for its owner.
Footgear
• They had leather or woollen shoes.
