RACHEL AND JACOB: A LOVE STORY

Rachel & Jacob first met at Ouachita Baptist University in fall 2009. Jacob was auditioning for a play and immediately caught Rachel’s attention. Their friendship began to grow

during rehearsals for a small show at OBU. Rachel, who was directing the show, was won over with Jacob’s Russian hat and

strong accent. The pair grew close with late night rehearsals, Miss. Marple movie nights and their love of laughter (Jacob even let

Rachel bleach his hair and facial hair to match a wig for his part). Although Rachel was a senior and near graduating, she and Jacob (then a sophomore) found themselves carving out more and more time to spend together. When it came time for Rachel to graduate,

Jacob told her, “I realize I just can’t live without you”. And their wonderful journey began.

Worlds apart, Rachel in Florida and California and Jacob in Texas and Arkansas, the couple built their lives around trips and every phone conversation they could fit in. They continued to dance in each others worlds, getting to meet some amazing people on their

journeys.

The Lord showed Rachel and Jacob how His plans work out; so much better than they could have ever imagined.

WorshipIn Christ Alone, written by Getty and Townend

In Christ alone my hope is found,He is my light, my strength, my song;this Cornerstone, this solid Ground,

firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease

My Comforter, my All in All,here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone who took on fleshFullness of God in helpless babe

This gift of love and righteousnessScorned by the ones he came to save:

Till on that cross as Jesus died,The wrath of God was satisfied -For every sin on Him was laid;

Here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground His body lay

Light of the world by darkness slain:Then bursting forth in glorious Day

Up from the grave he rose againAnd as He stands in victory

Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,For I am His and He is mine -

Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,This is the power of Christ in me;From life’s first cry to final breath.

Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man,Can ever pluck me from His hand;Till He returns or calls me home,

Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

Rachel Lyn Street was born December 5, 1987 in St. Louis, Missouri, the second of four “Little Women” to Steve and Fran Street. Growing up Rachel’s family moved until finally landing in Mahomet, Illinois. She has been blessed to live in Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Florida, Washington D.C., London and California. Needless to say, Rachel loves traveling and can’t wait to do more while holding hands with Jacob. Rachel graduated from Ouachita Baptist University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre, she has since worked

for David’s Bridal, Disney and Enterprise. Those who know Rachel know she lives for adventure and spontaneity. The way to her heart is through ice cream or Indian food and, of course, anything to do

with theatre.

Jacob Daniel Way was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on March 6, 1991 and was evenually accompanied by his younger sister, Hannah, to Mark and Beth Way. Jacob’s family moved around before finally

settling in Rockwall, Texas. Jacob graduated from Ouachita Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Seconddary

Education in May 2013. He has a deep passion for the narrative of history and for reaching teenagers, he has long felt the call to be an educator. A self-proclaimed “nerd”, Jacob enjoys Star Wars and Lord

of the Rings as well as theatre, good food and intramural sports. Jacob feels so blessed to have met such a true and beautiful best

friend in Rachel, he can’t wait to see what the Lord has in store for their marriage.

ABOUT THE COUPLE

It was October 13, 2012 and Jacob was coming to visit me in California for his fall break. Once he arrived we both decided to hit

the happiest place on earth.

We waltzed into Disneyland which was completely decorated for the autumn celebrations. Jacob said, “ Oh Rachel, let’s go get a picture

in front of the castle.” I readily agreed.

As we started down Main Street, USA I remembered, “Oh Jacob, let’s first get a fast pass for Star Tours. I know it’s your favorite and it

books out so quickly!”

He replied, “ The castle is so close. It won’t take long.” So we kept on walking.

“Well let’s at least look at the wait times.”

“Rachel! We’re here. Lets just get the pic!!!”

Jacob has never been enthusiastic about pictures so I started to suspect something.

Then as we were 10 feet away from the “Walt and Mickey Partners” statue I saw… an outline of a box in his pocket….and thus began to hyperventilate. The concerned Jacob then sat me down on the

nearest bench to calm me down.

Jacob: “Rachel, what’s wrong?”

Me: “Oh…I (gasp)…can’t (gasp)…tell…you!”

Jacob was so wonderful to slightly calm me down and I just stared into his eyes and said, “Are we just taking a picture Jacob?” And he

replied, “Rachel…we are just taking a picture.”

He grabbed my hand and we walked to the statue. He asked a passing photographer to grab a few quick photos. We smiled. And as Jacob knows, I love to take creative pictures. So he said, “Rachel

how about we recreate this statue. You point like Walt and will I bend down and pose like Mickey.”

We got in the pose and he said, “…Rachel.”

I turned and he was on one knee and began a gorgeous soliloquy. My eyes started to mist. He pulled out the ring and the world seem to stop for a

moment.

Page 17: R and J Program

Ever since I met Rachel I knew there was something special about her. Not only in her beautiful personality and the rarity of angels on Earth, but in the way she compelled my heart. She truly was special

and the moment she agreed to be my girlfriend, I knew the day would come when I would ask her to be my wife.

Rachel had been at Disneyland for 2 months or so and we were excited to get to finally see each other. We so cherished our visits,

for apart from our nightly phone conversations, that is what comprised our relationship for over a year and a half. But this visit would be different. This visit I would say “hello” as a boyfriend and

say “goodbye” as a fiancé.

On October the 13th, 2011 I was more nervous than I have ever been. Anticipation, excitement, love, the gravity of the situation, all had kept me up the night before and all plagued me again. The long connecting flights from Dallas to Anaheim seemed to drag by as my

stomach performed acrobatics. The flight was smooth; it was my emotions that were experiencing turbulence.

In the right pocket of my cargo shorts I carried a small object that would transform the life trajectory of both Rachel and me. I checked the small black box in my pocket every 5 minutes. First

a careful glance, then a physical squeeze, and finally a visual confirmation involving the box being opened, ring examined,

followed by a meticulous placement of the box back where it came from. This, along with a running dialogue of the most important

speech of my life, played in my mind, only to be stopped, reversed, or edited in my quest to try to articulate love and commitment

perfectly. This is how I spent the flight.

Landing at John Wayne International Airport was a welcome relief. I must say, it took a great deal to not propose on the tarmac.

Thankfully, we immediately sped to Disneyland to begin our fun day; a day we would never forget.

Months before, Rachel had told me all of the stereotypical places people got engaged around the park, as merely a conversational

Page 18: R and J Program

topic. I took notes and was then convinced that the only place that would surprise her would be by the statue of Walt and Mickey with

Sleeping Beauty’s Castle in the background.I then hurried her along, striving towards the castle like a moth to

the flame. My mind was racing and palms sweaty and before I could blink, we were at the base of the statue. The statue is of Walt with

the significantly shorter Mickey next to him.

In order to maintain a level of the ordinary, I found a Disney photographer to take our picture, which he enthusiastically obliged

to do. We took several normal poses and then I proposed a fun picture (as I know how much Rachel enjoys them). I asked her to

pose like Walt and I would play the part of Mickey. As she stood tall and proud I slid down to one knee to match Mickey’s height. During

the picture I pulled out the box and revealed the ring and looked up into Rachel’s beautiful face. At the moment down on my knee, I knew that this was the loneliest I would ever be. I told her how

much she meant to me and how I would also love and cherish her and asked her if she would marry me. She immediately nodded her

head, I stood and we embraced.

Before we can speak to each other our photographer gets ecstatic and begins taking more pictures and prompting us for the perfect

shot. He directed me to place the ring on her finger and then to kiss her as he zoomed in, clicking away. By this time a small crowd of

Disney patrons had formed and began to clap and celebrate in our joy. We quickly rushed off and found a park bench to sit and cherish

the moment. She said, “Yes.” She said, “Yes!”

I have waited and prayed for this moment my whole life. I may not have always known who she was but I knew what she was like. I had

always imagined her qualities and likes and dislikes, a dream girl, someone perfect. There, on that park bench, it was reaffirmed to me that the woman holding my hand was far better than any dream girl.

She blew that girl out of the water.

I knew that Rachel was the one.
