F P ’ D “Christ is Risen! Indeed, He is Risen!”

Dear Friends, Christ is Risen! Indeed, He is Risen! In this respect, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, nothing has changed. It will always be this way. The Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity was crucified upon the cross for our sins and He rose from the dead. No matter how many twists and turns our lives may take or how often our plans may be upended, this does not change, Jesus Christ lives and reigns! Two accounts taken from the Gospel of Luke can help remind us of this Easter Truth especially if we too, immersed in uncertainty, have forgotten. The disciples, as St. Luke’s Gospel relates, went to the tomb to bring spices they had prepared and upon arrival found the stone rolled away. When they entered, they did not find the body of Jesus, but two men in dazzling garments. What I find particularly interesting for us today is the words that follow. “They [the disciples] were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground. They said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” This encounter led them to go out and announce all the things they had seen and heard. The second account that of the appearance of our Lord to the disciples on the road to Emmaus. We know the story well; therefore, I simply highlight the following, “the two of them . . . were conversing about all the things that had occurred. And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. He asked them, “what are you discussing as you walk along?” They stopped, looking downcast.” (Lk 24,13-17) From this point forward, as you know, Christ remains with them and upon the breaking of the bread their eyes were opened and they recognized Him. What can we take from these two accounts, perhaps feeling the strangeness of an unusual “Easter at Home” or to put it another way “Easter away from the Church”? I would say, do not act as though Christ is still in the tomb. The events of our lives, both the ordinary and the extraordinary, may fill us with fear and bewilderment. This is how the Jesus’s disciples were behaving after His death and prior to His Resurrection. We too can allow life’s uncertainties to force us into acting as a disciple who has yet to encounter the resurrected Lord. In other words, the disciples in both accounts were downcast and fearful, but then they met the Risen Lord they went to announce to the others what they had seen. Now is not a time to live as if Christ was not victorious, but it is a time to announce to one another, especially other believers, that Christ is Risen! Indeed, He is Risen! We may still not be able to gather in close proximity—at least no closer than 6 feet—but what we can do is announce the good news of God’s grace! When we do this, we can fully embrace and welcome, perhaps even joyfully, the twists and turns, the ups and downs of life. Although we may feel unsettled when our human plans are shelved or our story-book ending is being erased, we who believe may know that this is not the end of the story. The Lord tells us, “as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways.” (Isaiah 55, 9) So, we would do well to remember now that His plans are better than my plans and He has only one ending in mind—that I may share in the glory of His Resurrection. His plan is exclusively directed towards the glory of my Resurrection. Therefore, we need not fear nor allow our hearts to be restless, because Jesus Christ, the Word Incarnate, rose from the dead! Based upon this fact, we may approach our uncertain world with a sense of certainty. May we with the help of God’s grace enjoy the confidence of St. Paul, and say along with him, “But now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem. What will happen to me there I do not know, except that in one city after another the Holy Spirit has been warning me that imprisonment and hardships await me. Yet I consider life of no importance to me, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to bear witness to the gospel of God’s grace.” (Acts 20:22-24) Happy Easter! Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. What is a Spiritual Communion? St. Thomas Aquinas once defined Spiritual Communion as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament and in lovingly embracing Him as if we had actually received Him.” You just need to approach Him with sincerity, humility and a desire to follow in His footsteps in acts of faith and charity. St. Jean-Marie Vianney, a French priest famous for converting countless souls to Christ in his parish of Ars in the 19th century, once said “when we feel the love of God growing cold, let us instantly make a Spiritual Communion. When we cannot go to the church, let us turn towards the tabernacle; no wall can shut us out from the good God.”

PARISH REGISTRATION Are You a Registered Parishioner? If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a parishioner of Our Lady of Peace parish. Why registering is important: 1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register. 2. Make Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. If you’re not a registered parishioner, this may greatly delay the process for Sacrament prep. 3. Letters of Recommendation There are occasions where letters of recommendations

are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you’re not registered, we cannot provide this letter. Anyone, regardless of where they live is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork cannot not be processed within the 3 months. To register, call 408-988-4585, or email us at [email protected] for a registration form.

Follow our daily devotions online! For more information & resources during the shelter-in, please go to www.olop-shrine.org/coronavirus

You are still welcome to visit the shrine and pray outdoors! For your safety and the safety of others, please try to remain at least 6 feet apart from others and cover all sneezes and coughs. Additional guidelines on dealing with the spread of the virus is linked below.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As we experience this global pandemic of the Coronavirus, I pray that you and your family are safe and well. None of us has experienced in our lifetime such a crippling plague that has brought humanity to its knees! Yet, since we are on our knees, I invite us to turn to our God in prayer and supplication to bring relief to the suffering of so many. Last Friday, Pope Francis invited the world to join him in prayer, as together we lifted a cry of humanity to God. In that moving ceremony, Pope Francis led the world in a heartfelt acknowledgment of how much we need God. Reflecting on the Gospel passage that recounts Jesus’ calming of the storm at sea, the Holy Father identified the fear of the disciples at sea with the fear and anxiety that we experience now in this pandemic (cf. Mark 4:35-41). Just as the disciples turned to Jesus in their moment of anguish and grief, so we turn to Jesus in our moment of sorrow for those who have died and of concern for those inflicted with the virus, for those who care for the sick, and for all those for whom this crisis means uncertainty and distress. While storms may blow, Jesus does not abandon us. He stays in the boat with us. He will calm the sea, in his time. He invited his disciples then, as he does us now, to turn to him and to trust in him. As we maintain social isolation and distancing for the common good, we continue the Church’s mission in ways we never would have imagined. I have been conducting weekly virtual meetings with our pastors, through Zoom, to field their questions, listen to their concerns, and to share information. I encourage you to stay connected to your parish through live-streamed Masses and other prayer opportunities offered virtually across the Diocese. You can find more information on worship and spiritual resources at www.dsj.org/coronavirus. During this Lenten season, we are also partnering with Catholic Charities and other social ministries in outreach to those in need. Many of our parishes have opened their parking lots to food distribution, in partnership with Second Harvest and Catholic Charities. Our parishes are learning new ways of virtual ministry to parishioners and those most in need. I ask that we, too, check in on our neighbors, our relatives, and fellow parishioners through phone calls, video calls, social media, or other means of communication that respect social distancing. While we cannot assemble in person to celebrate the Eucharist, let us draw close to God, who never abandons us, who remains in the boat with us, who strengthens and reassures us. Let us discover anew our common humanity and that we are called to care for one another. Be assured of my prayers for you and your loved ones, as well as for all those who are working to end this pandemic. I share with you a prayer during this pandemic to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Oscar Cantú Bishop of San Jose
