Our church is Baltimore’s Premier Polish-American Roman Catholic parish and has become the center of Polish religious, cultural, and social life. Our parish is a place where Polish values are proclaimed and upheld and also a place where Poles and non-Poles can express fully their delity to God. We are not in any sense a closed community, and we welcome all Americans and all ethnic groups in our church. A key Polish value is openness to the universal mission of the Church, and thus we try to make our church which is also the Archdiocesan Shrine of Divine Mercy a place in which our friends and neighbors of non-Polish background can feel comfortable practicing their Catholic faith.

2017 ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL

APPEAL

COMMITTMENT WEEKEND

This week, Catholics across the

Archdiocese are being asked to

make a commitment to support the 2017

Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. Ministries

supported by the Appeal have a direct impact

on the administration and evangelization

efforts at Holy Rosary as well as at the other

parishes in our Archdiocese. Your generous

support and participation is critical to the

success of the 2017 Archbishop’s Annual

Appeal at Holy Rosary and helps move us

forward in hope as we seek to better embody

the Gospel message in our lives. Please

complete a pledge form or pledge online at

www.archbalt.org/appeal.

We are asking parishioners to make a

commitment to prayerfully reflect on the

generousity of God in their lives and to

decide upon a suitable gift to reflect their

appreciation for God’s gifts. Finally,

regardless of the ability to make a gift or

pledge of support, to pray for the success of

the 2017 Archbishop Annual Appeal, for all

those who have volunteered their time and

talents to further the mission, and for the

countless individuals and families among us

who rely on the Appeal for material and

spiritual sustenance.

In the Scripture…

Our Mission Is to Make a Difference for Others.

Jesus chose his words carefully - including the

words we just listened to. They are part of his

famous Sermon on the Mount, which is like

a highlight film of all his sermons. In this sec-

tion, he is explaining to his followers what

he expects of them. It is like a coach talking to

his players before the big game - but this

is Jesus talking to us about the game of life it-

self. It is like a general instructing his troops be-

fore a big battle - but this is Jesus talking

to us about the battle of life. He is giving us

our life-mission. And what is that life-mission?

To be salt and light for the world around us.

Salt had two functions in the ancient world: it

gave flavor to food, and it also preserved food.

They didn't have refrigerators back then, so they

would preserve meat by putting a thin layer of

salt over it. Light had the same function then as

it does now: to push back the darkness. But in

the ancient world, before the advent of electrici-

ty, darkness was a much more dramatic reali-

ty than it is to us. The ancients understood

how helpless they were without a lamp. We, on

the other hand, because electric lighting

is everywhere, rarely even have to think about

our need for light. Salt and light - these are the

comparisons Jesus uses to explain our life-

mission. And what is the common characteris-

tic of salt and light? They are both for some-

thing else. Their purpose is not self-centered,

but other-centered. And that's the point. A

Christian's mission in the world, just like

Christ's mission, is to make a positive differ-

ence for others, by bringing them the power and

the illumination of the gospel.
