NXP has announced the LPC11C22 and
LPC11C24 micro-control-lers with integrated CAN high-speed transceiver compliant to ISO 11898-2. The ARM Cortex-M0 based IC comes with easy-to-use on-chip CANopen driver software. Offered as a Sys-tem-in-Package solution, the chips in LQFP48 pack-age feature the TJF1051 CAN transceiver.
CAN is recognized as one of the most robust and reliable communication sys-tems. With the introduction of micro-controllers with on-chip CAN transceiver, NXP has opened the door for widespread adoption of low-cost CAN in an increas-ing variety of industrial and automation applications for factories, buildings and in the home. Typically, CAN transceivers can cost as much as or even more than the micro-controller itself. Integrating the CAN trans-ceiver on-chip increases system reliability and qual-ity, reduces electrical inter-connect and compatibility issues, and reduces board space by over 50 % while adding less than 20 % to the MCU cost. “Offering a high-ly optimized CAN solution in a single package simplifies industrial network design,” said Geoff Lees from NXP Semiconductors. ”The close coupling of transceiver and 32-bit MCU with CANopen protocol support directly on-chip extends our plug-and-play system approach.”
The CAN physical lay-er is designed for up to 1 Mbit/s data rates and deliv-ers optimal performance for industrial applications with state-of-the-art electrostat-ic discharge (ESD) protec-
tion, improved electromag-netic compatibility (EMC) and low-power operation. High ESD handling capabil-ity on bus pins is combined with additional fail-safe fea-tures such as high DC han-dling capability on CAN
pins, transmit data domi-nant time-out function, un-der-voltage detection, and thermal protection. Low-power management is inte-grated, and the transceiver can disengage from the bus when not powered up.
CANopen micro-controller with on-chip CAN transceiver
CANopen driver soft-ware is provided in the on-chip ROM with an easy-to-use API enabling users to rapidly adopt the LPC11C22/C24 into embedded net-working applications based on the CANopen standard. The following functions are included in the API:
CAN set-up and initial-izationCAN send and receive messagesCAN statusCANopen Object Dic-tionaryCANopen SDO expedit-ed communicationCANopen SDO segment-ed communication primi-tivesCANopen SDO fall-back handler
The standardized CANopen application layer (EN 50325-4) is especially well suit-ed for embedded networks in all kinds of control, such as machines and eleva-tors, making proprietary or application-specific appli-cation layers obsolete. In-corporating CANopen driv-er software in on-chip ROM reduces overall risk and ef-fort, while providing design engineers with the added advantage of reduced op-erating power, as well as secure and safe boot load-ing via CAN. With the secu-rity and peace of mind of-fered by ROM-based driv-ers, updating flash memory via in-system programming (ISP) over CAN provides the whole range of functionality – from programming blank parts in production, through changing system parame-ters, to full in-field re-pro-grammability.

Infineon’s IFX1050G trans-ceiver is compliant to ISO 11898-2. The bus pins are short circuit proofed. The transceiver, optimized for a high immunity against EMI (electromagnetic in-terference), provides three operation modes: Normal, Receive-only and Stand-by. Two logical input pins (RM and INH) control the mode selection. In the Nor-mal mode the transceiver is able to receive data via CAN and to transmit mes-sages to the CAN lines. In the Stand-by mode, the component consumes a reduced current from the power supply. The receiv-er and the transmitter are disabled and the device cannot receive any data
from the CAN network, nor transmit any data to it. When the Stand-by mode is not used the INH pin may be connected to GND in order to switch the trans-ceiver permanently into Normal mode.
The Receive-only mode is intended for diag-nostic purposes (to check the bus connections be-tween the nodes) as well as to prevent the bus being blocked by a faulty perma-nent dominant TxD input signal. In this mode, the output stage of the trans-ceiver is disabled. The component cannot send any data to the network, but is still able to receive data.
