Experimental aerodynamic investigation8 were conducted on a .006 scale model
of the space shut t le 040-A orbiter and i t s external f u e l tank u t i l iz ing the NASA/
MSFC dual s t ing support system i n the MSFC 14 x 14 inch Trisonic Wind Tunnel
#arms1 force, pltching moment and axial force components were recorded simultan-
eously on the orbiter and the tank a t aelected tank f i e l d positions beneath the
orbiter a6 both models were pitched through an angle of attack range of -5' t o 20'.
Incidence angles between orbi ter and tank of oO, 5O, 10' and 15' were iavestigated.
m i n g these t e s t s Mach number was s e t a t 0.6, 2.0 and 4.0.

CONFIGURATIONS INVESTIGATED
0.006 sca le models of the 0 4 0 0 ~ space s h u t t l e o r b i t e r and its externa l oxygen
tank (EOT) were each s t i n g mounted i n the MSFC-14 x 14 inch tunnel u r t l i z i n g the
MSFC dual s t i n g rupport system f o r capt ive separat ion t e s t i n g (see F i ~ ~ ~ r e 1 ),
Sketchee of these models are shown i n Figures 2 through 6 . Pert inent dimen-
s iona l information i e a l s o given i n Table I f . A complete run summary is contained
i n Table I , the Data Set Collation Sheets.
Figure 7 depic ts the tank separat ion f i e l d mapped during these investigation8.
Since the plot ted da ta a r e shown non-dimensionalized by the wing mean aerodynamic
chord (E), a t ab le is included on t h i s f igure t o r e l a t e the dimensional value t o the
non-diolensional value.
TEST CONDITIONS
Table I I I l i e t s the tunnel conditions prevai l ing during the tests. Testing
procedure coxwisted of s e t t i n g the EOT moment reference center (MRC) a t a p a r t i c u l a r
predetermined f i e l d pos i t ion (see Figure 7 ) beneath the o r b i t e r and a t some re la-
t i v e incidenca angle t o the orbbter. The tunnel would then be s t a r t e d and the two
model. pitched together through an o r b i t e r a w l e of a t t a c k range of -5' t o 20' ( the
tank angle of a t t a c k would vary depending on the r e l a t i v e incidence angle between
the two vehic ler ) , A t the end of an alpha sweep the tunnel would be stopped and
the EOT moved t o another por i t ion or incidence angle and the process repeated.
TEST FACILITY DESCRIPTION
The MSFC ih x 14 Inch Tr i son ic Wind Tunnel i s an i n t e r m i t t e n t blowdarn
tunnel, which opera tes by high pressure a i r f lowing from storuge t o cd ther
vacuum or atmospheric condi t ions . A Mach number range from C.2 t o 5.05 i s
covered by u t i l i z i n g two interchangeeble test sec t ions . The t r anson ic sec-
t i o n permits t e s t i n g a t M c h 2.75 t o 5.35. Mach numbers between 0.2 and 0.9
a r e obta ined by us ing a con t ro l l ab l e d i f f u s e r . The range from 0.95 t o 1.3
i s achieved through t h e use of plenum suc t ion and per fora ted wal ls . Mach
numbers of 1.46, 1.96 and 2.48 a r e produced by interchangeable s e t s of f i x e d
contour nozzle blocks. Above Mach 2.48 a s e t of f i x e d contour nozzle blocks
m e t i l t e d ~ n d t r m s h t e d automat ic~l1.y t o produce any d e s i r e d Mach number
i n 0.25 increments.

Ihe tunne l flow i s e s t a b l i s h e d and con t ro l l ed wi th a servo ac tua ted ga t e
valve. The con t ro l l ed a i r flows through t h e valve d i f f u s e r i n t o t h e s t i l l i n g
chamber and hea t exchanger where t h e a i r temperature can be con t ro l l ed from
ambient t o approximutely 180'~. The e i r then passes through t h e t e a t ~ e c t i o n
which contains t h e nozzle blocks end t e s t region.
Downstream of t h e tes t sec t ion i s a hydrau l i ca l ly con t ro l l ed p i t c h sec-
tor t h a t provides e t o t a l angle of a t t a c k range of 20' (+lo0). S t i n g o f f s e t s
end extensions e r e uva i lub le for ob ta in ing var ious maximum angles of a t t a c k
up t o go0.
DATA REDUCTION
The aerodynamic force, and momenta measured by the internal etrain gauge
balance have bran reduced to coefficient form utilizing the folSowing reference
information:
