GENERAL INFORMATION AND TRAINING

I was born in Solihull 1964. My mother was from Prestatyn and father from Lincolnshire. As my father was in the RAF I attended 11 schools! My art training was at Wrexham College of Art for my Foundation year and then Newcastle upon Tyne for my Degree in Fine Art. I have pursued several occupations including the motor trade, running my own interior design and specialist painting business, primary school teacher in Rhyl and Prestatyn and since 2002 the joint owner, with my wife Lynn, of the Kinmel Arms in St George. I have always drawn, painted, photographed and kept sketchbooks of ideas since finishing my degree. I have undertaken many commissions for paintings for private collections, usually work of quite a large format. I am fortunate to have gallery space in our restaurant and works are exhibited continually there.

INFLUENCES

My influences are all around me. I chose to come back to live in North Wales after my degree because of the landscape and its diversity. I have spent my life climbing, walking, cycling, swimming and running in mountains and am a gatherer! Sketches, written descriptions, natural objects such as stones, shells, wood give me inspiration. I am a prolific reader and the written word features heavily in my work. The geography, geology, flora, fauna and landscapes of Snowdonia, the Clwydian Hills and the dunes of Prestatyn and Gronant have always held a fascination for me. The way in which I interact with it, physically, mentally and spiritually, is my interest. Trips abroad always inspire with new landscapes to take in.

THE WORK

My work generally starts from a pencil or ink sketch done outside or from a poem written after a journey into the land. These are done in sketchbooks or straight onto 20x16 sheets of watercolour paper. My brush and ink pictures are one main aspect of my work.

I spend time in studio working further on initial sketches, adding text, geometry and some colour work. These pictures make up another aspect of my work. My paintings/collages are primarily landscapes with layers of other visual motes brought together. The pieces are set on canvas on which I start with a layer of plaster. Into this I can layer objects, photos, text and drawings, textures as a base. Then I use acrylic paints for the main body of the painting. Subsequent layers are added with text, silver and gold leaf gilding and mark making with various pencils and pens. The work is sealed and waxed to allow light to react differently with differing light sources and times of day. Pieces range in size from 16 inch square to 8 feet. I am currently revisiting life drawing classes and wish to pursue figurative work as another avenue. Original works, cards, prints, poems, pebbles… all available at the Kinmel Arms Gallery!!

COMMISSIONS

I’m always happy to work to commission and enjoy working with clients to produce finished works.

Go and have a browse and root about in Lynn’s pantry of delight. There are lots of lovely things to take home for

yourselves or as gifts for loved ones or house-sitters!

All foody things are made here in our kitchens by our Head Chef, Chad, our Pastry Chef, Heddwen and the team.

We also have olives and cheeses for sale from our wonderful suppliers. Of course, all our wines are available as well

and don’t forget Tim’s cards and paintings.

Hampers also available to make up and mixed cases of wines.
