News and reviews Manx 20 km by Bridget Kaneen The Manx 20 km championships moved away from its traditional May date due to a clash with the Northern athletics league home match, but the move proved to be a popular one with visiting G.B. international events also coming over to race and support the event. One such supporter was Alex Wright who had represented G.B. with distinction in the recent World Championships in the Moscow 20k walk event. Also in attendance was National Endurance coach mentor Andi Drake who presented the awards at the conclusion of racing. Current U.K. champion at 20k, Bethan Davies was racing with her Welsh counterpart, Heather Lewis, who were closely matched by top Manx female walker Michelle Turner. It looked to be a potentially exciting battle in prospect. The men’s event was going to be an entirely local contest, but no less interesting. Parish Walk winner, Michael George, and 100 mile National champion, Richard Gerrard, were up against the junior duo of Alex Eaton and Adam Cowin. At the off Bethan took a keen hold and the overall lead in the early stages, she was closely tracked by Heather with Michael George and Richard Gerrard and Michelle Turner just 30 seconds in arrears in the first 5km. The junior duo of Alex Eaton and Adam Cowin were taking their time to get into the longer event in their second ever try out at the distance. By halfway everything had closed up considerably with the top 5 separated by only 7 seconds. Michelle wisely stopped at halfway, with recent illness finding her still feeling less than 100%. Former Kent walker Becky Collins now racing for North Down A.C. also called it a day at 10km happy to record a sharp 54 minute time. Alex Eaton started to make his charge after a patient first half. By the following lap he was up to 2nd position and by 15k mark he had taken the lead and was being chased by Michael George. It was a lead he was never to relinquish, he took the overall win with an impressive personal best of 1 hour and 40 minutes and 52 seconds, nearly 10 minutes quicker than his debut 20k walk last year at Ronaldsway.

Manx 20 km cont’d Michael was just 20 seconds further back in 2nd with top female finisher Heather Lewis 3rd overall just another couple of minutes behind Michael and setting a lifetime best of 1 hour 43 minutes 35 seconds some 2 minutes quicker than her previous best. Richard Gerrard picked up his pace in the latter stages to take 3rd man and Bethan was 2nd woman home. Richard Wild recorded a personal best and inside 1 hour 50 minutes for the first time. In the 5km event Tom Partington recorded a personal best. Likewise Becky Greatbatch delivered a good performance. Isaac Quayle and Alexander Kneale were very closely matched in the junior mile and finished just two seconds apart. Thanks to all the race officials and supporters who turned out in the showery weather to support the event and to Andreas.

100 miles by Steve Taylor The 100 miles returned to the Isle of Man for the third time this year after previous events in 1998

and 2006. Sponsored by Tower Insurance, the event was held on the famous Bowl circuit which

was the venue when Paul Nihill set his then world record 20km walk of 84.50 in 1972. On this

occasion though athletes faced 200 laps in order to complete the distance and qualify as a

    Centurion.

    September 2013

100 miles cont’d 95 people entered the race with entries

received from as far afield as South Africa and

the USA. Glorious sunshine greeted the walkers

at the start line but as they moved into the night

strong winds and heavy rain put paid to the

ambitions of many. As dawn broke those that

remained in the race on the circuit were

supported by a very enthusiastic crowd of

supporters many of whom had competed earlier

on the day and rather than go home stayed on

to witness Richard Gerrard turn in a display of

    top quality endurance walking.

The joint Parish Walk record holder took an

early lead in the event and walking through the night was never headed and won by more than 30

minutes from fellow joint Parish record holder Vinny Lynch. Both had competed with distinction at

Roubaix in 2012 and, along with third placed Robbie Callister, were first time Centurions on a day

which saw 85 walkers start the gruelling target of walking 100 miles inside 24 hours.

‘It was much tougher than the Parish,’ Gerrard said at the finishing line following his victory. You

would think that a flat course would make it easier, but there’s no change of scenery and it was

really difficult at times to stay motivated. That said I’m really pleased to win and to finish my first

100 miles event, but I’m also glad it’s over.’

The race was flagged away by two legends

in Isle of Man race walking. John Cannell,

winner of the 100-mile event in 1987 and

multiple distance race winner Irene Corlett,

signalled the start of the event at 12 noon

    on Saturday.

    winner Richard Gerrard and Robbie

All 36 finishers were met at the line by Ann Sayer, president of the Centurions, who finished third

in the 1978 Parish Walk in a time of 17 hours 51 minutes. 24 of the finishers were first time

Centurions but our heart goes out to Robert de Wolf of Belgium who finished in 24.03.11, just

    outside the Centurion qualifying time.

100 miles cont’d The first woman over the line was the legendary veteran endurance walker Sandra Brown in an

impressive fifth position overall, this her 42nd centurion event. Local walker Maureen Moffat was

the second woman to finish followed by Janette Morgan both first time Centurions.

There was also a supporting Starlight Stroll 20-mile race, with 38 walkers lining up for the 10pm

start. The race was won by Michael George followed by Michelle Turner and Richard Wild in

    second and third respectively.

The 100-mile walk was organised by members of the Isle of Man race walking fraternity many of

whom also competed on the day.

President’s appeal from Mark Easton I would like to remind everybody there is still time to make a contribution to my President's Appeal. All of the proceeds will, through the R.W.A., be devoted to helping our current international walkers to further improve their performances and to help younger walkers to become international walkers. I will welcome any donations in person or by post, with cheques made payable to the Race Walking Association, to my address at 26 Colney Heath Lane, St Albans, Herts AL4 0TU.

Sarnia Walking Club, 3 kilometres road walk by Rob Elliott A good sized field of 22 walkers competed in the warm up event for the Church to Church two days later. The now traditional Friday evening road walk over 3 kilometres attracted many of the overseas walkers here for the weekend, some taking it a little easier than usual.

Stuart Le Noury, always walks this event without holding much back and he secured an easy win in 14.55, after passing halfway in 7.24. Phil Lockwood, judging by his face at the end put in a solid effort in second place less than a minute behind. Jason Le Noury completed the one, two, three in 16.14 after strolling the first lap of two in 8.35. Steve Allen from Barnet held off Jim Ball by two seconds, after Ball had closed the gap in the latter stages to claim fourth place.

Local Terry Bates and newcomer to Guernsey Malcolm Martin from Surrey WC, walked a close race throughout and could not be separated at the end. Bates secured another Guernsey age best time with his 17.17, clipping a few seconds off his road best.

First of the women was Surrey Walking Clubs Angela Martin, who walked a good race to finish in 19.35, not too far down on regular visitor Ed Shillabeer. Angela’s time was a new Guernsey all comers age best time.

3 kilometres road walk cont’d Next home was local Peter Beckerleg, perhaps relishing the competition, with a new personal best time. Taking around 40 seconds from his time only set last month. Local Sarnia stalwarts Kevin Le Noury and Mick Le Sauvage had close walks with visitors David Delaney, Mick Barnbrook, David Hoben and Norbet Will, all finishing within 27 seconds of each other.

Dave Dorey was isolated in the field clocking 21.06. The race for the Sarnia women was won by Rose Druckes from Kay Coulson. Jayne Le Noury, suffering an injury was third local. Visitor Dave Ainsworth separated the women, whilst local Allan Harris completed the field.

There, I think that’s everyone mentioned! Amongst the officials and spectators it was good to see regular walk visitor Sean Pender. Past Church to Church winner Colin Bradley was judging, whilst the father and son duo Chris and Jonathan Hobbs watched the race before their efforts on Sunday.

Sarnia Walking Club, One mile road walk, Les Amarreurs, Guernsey Rob Elliott Good sprint form for Le Noury Jason Le Noury recorded his best mile time for some time when he eased to victory in the one mile road walk. His 7.16 clocking, set in wet conditions, was nineteen seconds quicker than his last mile race in the club championships. The first three were all quicker than in that same race, with Peter Beckerleg in fourth equalling his best time. Jayne Le Noury led the women home in 11.22 from Rose Druckes in 11.44.

Guernsey Church to church walk, report and photos by Rob Elliott Debut Wins for Leading Man and Woman!

Twenty year old Ashford AC walker Jonathan Hobbs, an established race walker at shorter distances, stepped into the unknown in the traditional Church to Church walk over a distance of 19.4 miles and won a close race against local walker Jason Le Noury. Amongst his rivals on a hot, dry Sunday morning were four previous male winners of the event, including leading Guernsey walker Stuart Le Noury. Brother Jason Le Noury was making a return to the event with not too much race walking under his belt in recent times. The scene was set for a “masters” versus “youngsters” race with no obvious favourite.

Guernsey Church to church walk cont’d From the off at the South Esplanade and making the pace were Jonathan Hobbs and Stuart Le Noury, negotiating the uphill start and winding lanes before reaching the outskirts of the Forest Church after three and a half miles with a minutes lead over third man Adrian Edwards from Lancashire WC. Taking an easier start, Jim Ball from Steyning AC and Jason Le Noury were a further half minute or so adrift. Stuart injected a bit of pace to reach 5 miles with a clear lead, going through that point in 46.13, with Hobbs thirty three seconds behind. Ball and Jason Le Noury were still looking easy as they went through, two minutes down on the leader, with Edwards now a further 17 seconds back. The leading woman at this point was Angela Martin from Surrey WC,

walking with husband Malcolm and timed at 57.49. Local woman Jayne Le Noury was seven minutes down, but walking as steady as she could, due to recent injury and would be happy to just complete the course on this occasion. Jonathan Hobbs soon found himself level with the leader Stuart Le Noury after making up the gap in the undulating part of the course in the Upper Parishes, taking only five seconds longer to walk this 5 miles split than his first. By now Ball and Jason Le Noury were making ground on both the front two, walking over a minute quicker than the leader. Previous knowledge of this course perhaps was playing a part in the race tactics of the chasing duo. Dropping down towards the 10 mile point at the Little Chapel and the leaders went past in 93.37, less than thirty seconds ahead of Ball and Jason Le Noury. An exciting race was now developing. Back in fourth Edwards was alone in 97.38 but was looking strong and relaxed. Yorkshireman Peter Ryan was next another three minutes down, but although looking good was feeling rough after a recent tough time. He was almost ready to call it a day, but toughed it out to the end, after a few encouraging words along the course. Angela Martin, still racing with her husband, passed 10 miles in 1.54.47, still the leading woman by a long distance. Within the next few miles the leaders had been caught. The lead group was now four strong but not for too long. At the drinks station at 13 and a quarter miles Stuart Le Noury pulled out of the race, succumbing to a hip problem that has been giving him a problem for some time. A further mile down the road and Hobbs, looking strong and fluent started to pull away again. Jim Ball was beginning to suffer and Jason was just falling off the pace.

Guernsey Church to church walk cont’d At the Vale Church and 15 miles the two youngest in the race were a clear first and second, with Hobbs having a nine seconds advantage with his 2.20.44. Ball was now almost a minute down on the leader. Ball still had a chance of victory. Hobbs was now in unknown walking territory. Le Noury, short of training knew the course like the back of his hand from here to the finish and would be aware he was short on training. Still looking strong but probably too far back to make a serious challenge was Adrian Edwards in 2.27.48.

Maybe the decisive moment in the race was to happen in the next mile and the short climb to the 16 miles mark. Hobbs still had his lead when Le Noury had to make a quick pit stop and lost vital seconds, but not enough to make a difference to the final one, two.

Dropping downhill to the Bridge and St Sampsons and 17 miles, Hobbs was still looking strong, but could not be assured of victory. Ball was now dropping ground rapidly over the lead two, with Jason still moving along well. Approaching the final mile it was still down to the lead two to contest the win. After negotiating the stretch of road closure along the Esplanade, dodging the thousands of people from the visiting cruise ships and a food festival, Hobbs made his way to the final half mile where he cruised to victory by forty seven seconds to become the youngest men’s winner since 1977, crossing the line in 3.01.49. Jason Le Noury in second place, claimed the Victory Cup for first Channel Islander and recorded a surprise personal best time with his 3.02.36. A hard last few miles saw one time winner Jim Ball lose time, but holding on to third spot. Fourth man home Adrian Edwards, walking minutes quicker than Ball for the final 4.4 miles was still too far back to challenge for the top 3. Angela Martin, a recent convert to race walking walked a solid 3.46.52 to take the women’s title from Jayne Le Noury, with Kay Coulson in third. The Sarnia Walking Club would like to thank all who helped out with the walk and to the sponsors Bucktrouts (Walkers Crisps), Guernsey Sports Commission, Relate, Network Insurance, Healthspan, Rothschild, E S & M, Guernsey Candles, Taj Mahal Restaurant, Fletchersports and Fusion Systems

BMAF Track and Field Championships by Eric Horwill A moderate entry resulted in one race walk each day. Weather conditions were good on the Saturday for the 3km. The outstanding performance was a new M65 British record for Ian Richards. Although Sunday’s weather was not as bad as forecasted, a very strong blustery wind hindered progress down the home straight and unsettled most of the competitors. The winner on both days was Francisco Reis. At the AGM which followed Saturday’s competitions Ian Richards was elected to succeed John Hall as Race Walking Honorary Secretary and representative on the Executive Committee. I’m sure that all our Veterans/ Masters will join me in thanking John for all his efforts and hard work over the past few years.

International Race Walking and doping in the sports news There was a recent article in Athletics Weekly originally from Australia International Track and Field Newsletter, about the serious issue of doping control in International sport. They focused on the problems faced by the Russian Authorities with so many high profile walkers being subject to doping bans. This is not an issue limited to Russia or Race Walking as the news from Jamaica. The list of athletes currently facing or subject to doping sanctions makes depressing reading. So what is IAAF doing about it? Extracts from the IAAF website

“As part of the IAAF’s sophisticated anti-doping programme at the 14th edition of the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia, blood tests were conducted from 4-18 August for profiling purposes in connection with the Athlete Biological Passport. This programme was conducted in partnership with WADA and the WADA-accredited Laboratory in Lausanne.

A total of 1919 blood samples were collected from the athletes located at four different hotels, and these were analysed daily in the WADA-accredited laboratory in Moscow for haematological screening. The corresponding serum samples have been transferred to the Lausanne Laboratory for further analyses of various blood bio markers which are now on-going.”

“In addition to the blood sampling, the analyses of all urine samples collected at the IAAF World Championships have now been completed by the Moscow Anti-Doping laboratory, including the numerous specialised analyses such as EPO and IRMS.

A total of 538 athletes were urine tested during the competition and 132 during the pre-competition period. All urine samples collected in Moscow will shortly be transferred to long-term storage facilities provided by the Lausanne laboratory for eventual re-analyses at a later stage.

From the urine testing conducted, the IAAF can confirm that 7 (seven) athletes, which included one finalist, were reported with adverse findings”

    Selection policy – published October 2013 Overview UKA intend to support the IAAF World Race Walking Cup by selecting athletes who either have the potential to perform well at this competition, or at future major championships. Setting high guideline standards provides a realistic appraisal of the expected high quality competition at this event – a performance level that is compounded by the travel considerations and climatic conditions in China. The GB and NI team will travel to the Championships as a single team. All questions related to the selection policy and the trial races should be directed to Endurance Event Group Lead, Martin Rush ([email protected]). Eligibility 1. To be considered for selection, athletes must satisfy the following: a. be eligible to compete for GB&NI (i.e. full British passport holder);

    b. Have achieved a relevant BA qualification standard within the qualification period; 2. Junior athletes will be eligible for selection in this age group if they are born in 1995, 1996, 1997 or 1998; Qualification 3. Qualification performances for all events, except the Men’s 50km, must be achieved between 00:00 (GMT) 1 January 2013 and 24:00 (GMT) 6 April 2014 (BST); 4. Qualifying performance for the men’s 50km must be achieved between 00:00 (GMT) 1 January 2013 and 24:00 31 December 2013 (GMT). NO athletes will be selected for the Men’s 50km via performances achieved after this date; 5. The BA qualification standards are as follows: Men Event Women 4:06.00 Senior 50km N/A 1:26.00 Senior 20km 1:37.00 44:20 Junior 10km 51:00
