rain but the racestarted under
sunny skies butwith 30 minutesleft to run, the

in the air.Minutes later theentire track wasunder water."
"The BaltimoreGrand Prix
certainly hadsome teething
problems early inthe weekend butat the end of theday, the trackwas a blast to
photograph andthe drivers lovedit too. This photowas taken of the
LMP1 MuscleMilk machine
roaring down theback stretch
during the lasthalf hour of the
race."
"The eveninglight as therace was

the cars exitedthe final turnheading downthe stretch."
"Audi andPeugeot
brought outtheir big guns
for the premiererace of the yearin the Americas
at Petit LeMans. ThoughAudi struggledduring the race,
I love themovement andpower that isconveyed in
this slowshutter speed
image."
"The hillfollowing turn5 was a toughplace to shootand especially
at a slowshutter speed. I
had about asecond to findthe car in theview finder
before it wasgone again.The Ferrari

"Anyone who has seenmy work over the pastcouple of years knowsthat I love to showcasemy photos as works ofart - not just another
picture on the wall. I likemy work to be used as astriking desktop imageon a computer or hungon the wall as a poster. This year I was luckyenough to shoot forseveral teams at the
season Grand-Am RolexSeries season finale at
The Mid-Ohio Sports CarCourse in Lexington,
Ohio. It just so happensthat Mid-Ohio is in mybackyard – my home
track so to speak. I knowthe layout quite well
which allows me to focusnot on trying to find a
place for a good shot butrather to take my time tocreate striking images. Here's an image that I
created of the #30 MazdaRX-8 at the request of
Racers EdgeMotorsports to use as a
computer desktopwallpaper image for their
fans to download."
"This is my absolutefavorite picture of the
year. Relief.Exhilaration.Excitement.Exhaustion.Anticipation.
Enthusiasm. Joy.Many words can
describe this scene.I'd be willing to bet
that Memo Rojas, co-driver of the #01
Telmex Chip Ganassiwith Felix Sebates, felteach and every one ofthese emotions as hisfriend and teammateScott Pruett crossedthe finish line to endthe 2011 Grand-AmRolex Series season
with anotherchampionship. Beinga part of the post-racecelebration was one of
the most magicalmoments in my short
motorsportsphotography career
and certainly one that Iwill never forget."

Although I only had theopportunity to attend 3 racesin 2011, it was still asignificant year for me. Havingto wait until the middle of Julyfor my first race of the yearwas excruciatingly painful, especially since the racingseason starts in earnestaround April/May. Once I gotto the track and got thefamiliar sounds and smells Iknew the wait was well worthit. If you've never had theopportunity to attend a majorracing event, I can't stressenough how much different itis in person - it's intoxicating.
When I was asked to submitmy 5 favourite picture for 2011I thought it would be hardbecause I didn't think I'dactually had a very productiveyear. But once I started siftingthrough my pictures again, Ifound that I'd a lot morepictures that meant somethingspecial to me than I'dexpected. Without further adohere are my favourites in noparticular order from 2011...
While both Iain and Gail wereout shooting for RacerViewsthis year, Iain submitted thefollowing photos of his torepresent them both.
Iain Shankland
I'm not a big fanof Ferrari - I was
have to say Iloathe
everythingabout the
company andespecially theF1 team. Thatbeing said, Ilove the new458 Italia - it'sgorgeous. Thispicture is one ofmy favourites
simple becausethe red Ferrariis surrounded
by redadvertising
banners - I thinkit just "works."
"I had to put ina couple of
pictures fromthis race. Theall-new Panoz
car was present- only the
second time ithad been seenin a race. Thiscar is so ugly it
would makebabies cry andthat's why I had
to include ithere..Alas, itwas such a
failure the carhas been
scrapped andprobably willnever be seen
again in a race"
"One thing Ilove aboutthe ALMS is
that therace fans
areencouraged
to get upclose withthe carsand the
drivers onrace day.The fanslove it"
"Anotherthing I loveabout the
ALMS is thestart. Thefans arecleared
away andnow it's timeto race. This
is wheneveryone'sadrenalinstarts topump
throughtheir
veins..."
"Just say the word"Hockenheim" andyou can only thinkabout motor racing. Our friend and racecar driver Andreas
Wirth competes in theADAC Masters seriesin Europe. This year
we had theopportunity to go
over to Germany andsee him in the finalrace of the season. After all those yearswatching F1 races atHockenheim, it wasquite surreal to bethere shooting acouple of races.
Although the standslook empty, there'sactually well over
30,000 people at thetrack - it's huge and
they're all spread out.Ironically, the start/finish line is not the
best seat in thehouse. An entire
weekend of racing isonly €15!"
"After driving flatout along thelong sweeping
ParabolikaCurve,the drivers have
to come toalmost a
complete stop(from 310 km/h to50 km/h in lessthan 100m) tomake the right-hand turn and
head backtowards the
stadium section. It's a great placeto shoot becauseyou've got themcoming in full-steam and thenleaving quite
slowly."
"Thestadium
section isgreat
because thedifferentcoloured
seats makethe
backgroundso muchnicer toshoot."
"..and finally- I love it
when driversget reallycool paint-
jobs on theirhelmets.
Whywouldn't you
putsomethingdifferent on
your helmet? This was thebest one ofthe year for
me..."
