CLIL (Content Language andIntegrated Learning)Compliant with Erasmus+Funding Criteria
What is CLIL?CLIL aims to introduce students to new ideas andconcepts in traditional curriculum subjects using theforeign language as the medium of communication - inother words, to enhance your pupils learningexperience by exploiting the synergies between the twosubjects. This is often particularly rewarding wherethere is a direct overlap between the foreign languageand the content subject.
How does the CLIL approach benefit pupils?Although it may take a little while for pupils toacclimatise to the challenges of CLIL, once they arefamiliar with the new way of working, they will feelincreased motivation and focus. This makes it likely thatthey will progress at faster than usual rates in thecontent subject. CLIL aims to improve performance inboth the content subject and the foreign language.Research indicates there should be no detrimentaleducational effects for students taught in English eventhough it is not their mother tongue.
What are the practical implications ofintroducing CLIL into the schoolcurriculum? The subject content should always be the primary focusof any materials used in the CLIL classroom. CLILshould not be used as an opportunity to use texts asglorified vocabulary lists, or to revise concepts alreadystudied in the mother tongue. However, it is impossibleto transfer existing subject lesson plans withoutmodifying them to take into account pupil’s abilities inthe target language. Therefore the planning process isvital. It is likely that, especially to begin with, lessons willneed to be challenging cognitively, with comparativelylight linguistic demands.
Teachers need to design materials to suit the needs of theirlearners, and to enable them to develop until they areworking at high levels of cognitive and linguistic challenge.
Our CLIL course will allow teachers to build upon theirexisting language and learn new ideas and concepts tohelp teach their academic subject. The course isdesigned to give teachers an insight into how youngpeople learn languages and how they could teach them.A significant component is giving the teacher the toolsto continue to build upon their knowledge and learningafter the course in order to continue to gain maximumbenefit. The course is designed for non-native Englishspeaking qualified teachers who are required to teachtheir academic subject in English.
