Radicals and Conjugates

Radicals and ConjugatesEureka Math Algebra 2 Module 1 Lesson 9ObjectivesStudents understand that the sum of two square roots (or two cube roots) is not equal to the square root (or cube root) of their sum. Students convert expressions to simplest radical form. Students understand that the product of conjugate radicals can be viewed as the difference of two squares.

TrueTrueFalseTry a = 1 and b = 9 for each situation.

First thing to do is simplify each radical expression

Some radical properties used for exercises 1-5

The second product is a conjugate radical. Conjugates are similar to differences of squares.

5 3 = 2

49 2 = 47

5 4 = 1

The simplest form will not have a radical in the denominator.
