Every year the Praemium Imperiale, sponsored by the Japan Art Asso-ciation, is awarded to internationally outstanding artists in five fields: paint-ing, sculpture, music, theater/film and architecture. The 2017 honoree for architecture, Rafael Moneo, has previ-ously won the (even a bit more exalted) Pritzker Prize in 1996 and the Gold

Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2003. On October 18 in Tokyo, Moneo is to receive this addi-tional high honor, along with a purse of 15 million yen (about $136,000).

While correctly identified as a Span-ish architect, based in Madrid, Moneo has completed works internationally some of the most prominent ones here

in the United States. And his American connection is reinforced by his service from 1985 to 1990 as Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he still teaches.

As a youth, Moneo was reportedly interested in philosophy and painting, but he was influenced by his industrial designer father to study architecture. Graduating from the Madrid University School of Architecture in 1961, he traveled throughout Europe, worked for the great master Jorn Utzon in Denmark (think Sydney Opera House) and spent a two-year fellowship at the Spanish Academy in Rome. He seems to have always perceived design in the larger context of history and place.

Back in Madrid, his early career activities included teaching at his alma mater, founding and writing for the magazine Arquitectura Bis, and orga-nizing conferences, which brought him into contact with such notable contem-poraries as Peter Eisenman from the U.S., Alvaro Siza from Portugal, and Renzo Piano from Italy. His breadth of interests and contacts no doubt contributed to his success as dean at Harvard.

Moneo’s first internationally noted building, Bankinter in Madrid, was completed when he was 40 – an early age for a breakout work by an architect. Other major commissions followed, but the pace of his prac-tice picked up considerably with the widespread admiration for his National Museum of Roman Art in Merida in 1986. Modern in concept yet executed with brick walls and arches, the mu-seum symbolically resurrects ancient structures whose ruins share its site. Commissions followed for office build-ings, university and museum struc-tures, and even a cathedral – a very rare opportunity in modern times.

Moneo’s architecture has much in common with works of the revered American Louis Kahn (1901-1974), who was much admired internation-ally when Moneo was shaping his design identity. Like Kahn’s buildings, Moneo’s often celebrate the solidity of masonry and other highly durable materials. And like Kahn, Moneo has always shaped his buildings in relation to their surroundings, not just comple-menting neighboring structures and spaces but melding them into commu-nity-scaled compositions.

Accordingly, Moneo has resisted the

recent tendency to design buildings as autonomous, large-scaled sculptures, conceiving them rather as spaces for individual people to experience. Most memorable about his Davis Art Mu-seum at Wellesley, for instance, isn’t its relatively bland exterior (respect-fully deferring to a neighboring older landmark by architect Paul Rudolph), but the experience of traversing its simple yet grandly proportioned stairs and savoring the gentle daylight sifting down from its rooftop skylights.

At his Los Angeles cathedral, the lofty, softly daylighted interiors are

frankly more impressive than the fortress-like brick-walled exterior. The cathedral also demonstrates how sensitively Moneo relates his buildings to spaces outside them. The surround-ing plaza and gardens Moneo laid out here are as vital to the overall experi-ence as the building itself (for those who haven’t been there, images readily found online hint at the richness of experience there). His modestly scaled city hall in the Spanish city of Murcia combines with the equally modest plaza it faces to form a remarkably strong urban center.

Designing for a particular product to be showcased in a company’s workspace presents opportunities to weave something concrete – the product – into the larger fabric of a workspace.

Thales, a company developing cutting-edge aircraft con-nectivity and in-flight entertainment solutions for the aviation industry, asked A&D firm Ware Malcomb to help create an environment where both employees and clients can interact with the product and each other.

In a new 61,000 square foot building on Thales’ Irvine, California campus, Ware Malcomb sought to create that space by transforming the work environment into a dy-namic space for a diverse work demographic, in particular a younger generation of engineers.

“We’ve worked with Thales for about 12 years previously, but this is a pretty big fundamental change for them,” said Ted Heisler, Vice President, Interior Architecture & Design

of Ware Malcomb. The new building is more “open office” than Thales had

ever previously occupied. In their previous space, occu-pants were in 25% private office / 75% open, and now that ratio is at 10% private office / 90% open.

At the heart of the two-level office is a full service cafeteria with professional kitchen and work café, where employees can dine, hang out and collaborate. The work café includes a coffee bar and a bunch of seating options, and is a space that zeroes in on Thales’ intent to build a community at work.

“This work café is meant for people to meet internally,” said Mr. Heisler. “It’s a really dynamic space with a lot of soft seating where people can meet and work together informally. There’s a big group of engineers in this build-ing; and many times engineers are not as collaborative, but this space is wired to create more interactive collaboration throughout the day.”

Customer Experience Center, where Thales’ client base of major airlines are invited to participate and experience Thales’ solutions first-hand. The space is designed to accommodate Thales’ international clientele, enabling them to set up their own work space in small

conference rooms, enjoy access to a coffee bar, snacks and refreshments, a business center and multicultural prayer room. The new space features product displays, video walls, and breakout lounge areas with flat screens.

The Customer Experience Center also includes a demonstration area that

helps Thales show clients its services that enrich the travel experience; set elegantly into the middle of the space is a life-sized aircraft fuselage equipped with all of Thales’ newest solutions.

The space features a cohesive design integrating “artwork made from legacy inflight entertainment airplane parts, Thales corporate colors for a connection to the brand, wayfinding signage reflecting the Thales vernacu-lar, and an oceanic palate of blues, greens, and clean white emulating a Southern California aesthetic” – all flowing through the office environment, Customer Experience Center, lab, work café and outdoor patio.

“With the branding piece, we generated a lot of innuendo pointing towards flight and aviation, because it’s the heart of what they do,” said Mr. Heisler. And many of the solutions are interactive because the leadership wanted to continue to create a mean-ingful dialogue with employees.”

Ware Malcomb employed a seam-less integration of people, product, and place for Thales – a workplace that indeed has the power to build a com-munity and nurture innovation among young engineers and the diverse work groups that support them. n Customer Experience Center fuselage

concurrentsENVIRONMENTAL PSYCHOLOGYDesigning for Allby Sally Augustin, Ph.D.

I’ve just returned from vacation on a United Airlines flight where my legs were literally too long for my seat. For those of you I haven’t met: it’s probably helpful for you to know that I’m tall, with 36-inch inseams. There are a lot of people around on the planet who have longer legs than I do, and the fact that United doesn’t seem to be acting in a way that indicates concern about any of our basic physical safety (and the safety of others on the plane, because we must sit in our seats at an angle with our feet in the aisle) is pretty stunning. Us tall folks are also not comfortable, and that isn’t good for our mood or interest in flying on future United flights.

The response of my United cabin crew, when the fact that the seats on their airplane were inappropriately spaced, was brought to their attention, was that anyone too tall for a coach seat should buy a more expensive one. Wow! But re-ally, what else could they say, they are not directly responsi-ble for seating conditions on the airplanes. Corporate United seems to have decided to make a whole group of people, those who happen to be tall, by a quirk of fate, suffer – and to require taller passengers to rectify the situation them-selves by spending more money on their tickets.

We need to design smarter than United, and the many other airlines that concede to fitting passengers into smaller and smaller seats in order to increase profits.

Users come in a variety of packages, and some of their differences are more visible to the casual observer than others. Spending just a few moments, and applying a little common sense, can make it more likely that all of the prob-able users of a space will be safe and not uncomfortable.

I am particularly attuned to problems in design that relate to creating spaces, furniture, etc., that are too short/small because I am tall, and the problems I encounter with dining tables that are oddly short, for example, are generally pretty easy to predict. There are people who are very short who also have issues with spaces developed, however, and I’m not talking about just those who are officially Little People. Many upholstered chairs have deep seat pans, for example, and people whose height hovers around 5 feet are infan-tilized by sitting in these seats. Their leg length means that they can’t align their knees with the front of their chair while their back is against the backrest – so their legs stick out straight, like a toddler’s do in an adult-sized chair. Being infantilized does not have positive repercussions for either the person being compromised or those around them.

Just as designers need to recognize that tall and short people will use any environment they create, it’s important for them to remember that some of the people who will use what they’re developing will have more “hidden” issues that relate to using a space or object. Some of these relate, for example, to sensory capabilities. A wayfinding system can’t be useable only by those with color vision; many, many people are color blind. If a space is likely to be used by a relatively large number of people who have hearing related challenges, for example, because a relevant clinic/testing area/etc. is nearby, the DeafSpace design principles developed at Gallaudet University should be applied. That means, for example, that hallways should be a little wider and doors should open automatically to accommodate people who “talk with their hands.”

Sometimes, designing to make us all feel comfortable is a little trickier. An example: there is a push now to encourage people to walk up stairs instead of moving from floor to floor via an elevator. There are many good reasons to encourage stair use, including the health of the user and the planet (because human power is being used to move people not electricity). Some of us, either temporarily or permanently have trouble using the stairs, however. Maybe we have

Page 21: Rafael Moneo: Much Honored, Richly Deserving · 2017. 10. 16. · Rafael Moneo: Much Honored, Richly Deserving by John Morris Dixon Rafael Monero in Madrid at an exhibition of his

10.16.17 GIVING VOICE TO THOSE WHO CREATE WORKPLACE DESIGN & FURNISHINGS PAGE 21 OF 33

concurrentsasthma or a heart condition. We might also have a sprained ankle. Designing a lobby area where stairs are promi-nently placed to encourage use, but elevators are not included in ways that make the people who, for one reason or another, must use them feel deval-ued or that they are “bad” because they’re not using the stairs, is hard.

Standing meetings are also great, when everyone can stand with their heads at roughly the same height. Looking up or down at a conversation partner has just the effect that com-mon sense and old wives tales would predict. Also, some people just can’t stand comfortably for an entire meet-ing, even a short one, for example, be-cause they have a bad back. Readily available tall chairs can be helpful near standing meeting tables, for example, and so can a nearby conventional

height table to which a meeting can be gracefully moved, if needed.

Sometimes the clothes people wear have design implications. For ex-ample, many women wear skirts and skirt-wearers are often uncomfortable walking on transparent floors – and I do see transparent floors included in design plans from time to time. Skirts, depending on their length, cut, etc., can also make it difficult to sit (and get up from seats) on the floor or bleacher type seats. These sorts of seating op-tions can also be difficult for people with broken legs, too, for example. And I still see them recommended.

There are lots of ADA codes that need to be considered to make sure that the full set of potential users is comfortable. Also, the increasing number of people who weigh a little more than they should needs to be

recognized when design decisions are being made. Not having bariatric seating available can lead to collapsing chairs and lawsuits, as well as humili-ated clients who vow not to return to a space, for example.

Sometimes it’s not possible to respond to all user-related concerns – there may not be money available to install an automatic open door near an audiology clinic, for example – but all of the types of users who might reasonably be expected to encoun-ter a space/object still need to be considered and any possible appro-priate steps taken to make their time in a space/using an object a positive situation.

Spending a few minutes assessing any design plans in light of who users are, literally, and what their various ca-pabilities might be, is time well spent. Comfortable users are able to accom-plish whatever they’re being paid to do, and feel more valued by whoever is cutting that paycheck. n

r-d connectionRESEARCH-DESIGN CONNECTIONWeight and Perceptions and Actionsby Sally Augustin, Ph.D.

Taylor-Coville and Eves probed how our weight influences our perceptions of the world around us. Their findings can be useful to designers trying to understand and utilize data collected from space users, for example. Taylor-Coville and Eves found “more exag-gerated reports of staircase steepness

>Wilkhahn celebrated the opening of its redesigned NYC showroom. Designed by Gensler and led by Principal Carlos Martínez, the 3,700sf space was transformed with flexibility and product visibility in mind. The design concept was inspired by the compa-ny’s stand at Orgatec in 2016, using different materials

and shapes. The space was configured for a balance of both private and open spaces to showcase diverse and clever office solutions for new types of work environments. “Our design is based on the idea of a space that’s less about ‘displaying’ furniture, and more about understand-ing how people today interact with their workplace,” said Mr. Martinez. “We believe that when people visit a furniture showroom, they want to imagine themselves using it. This new showroom design is organized around the idea of activities, show-ing how people, in this case the Wilkhahn staff as well as their guests and customer, interact dynamically with their furniture.” Read More

nursing beds, including 76 specialized rehabilitation beds, 42 Alzheimer’s secure beds, and 42 long-term care beds, each on specially designed nursing units. The facility will be operated by tenant EPIC Healthcare Man-agement, LLC. “The goal for this project is to create a physical environment that encourages rehabilitation and well-being, so patients can recover and return home sooner,” says TAT Project Architect Gary Kane. “We em-braced the client’s philosophy of approaching the design more like that of a luxury hotel than a traditional healthcare facility, adapting traditional programmatic elements with an amenity based focus and utilizing high-quality finishes, furniture, and lighting to pro-mote a positive atmosphere while also responding to the needs of the memory and physically challenged.” The interior design focuses on resident ease of use, offering

wayfinding cues, finishes, fur-niture, artwork, and lighting that promote health and well-being. Each floor will have two common area rooms, with tall glass walls designed specifi-cally to accommodate patient sight lines. Other amenities include a large main dining room, a beauty salon/barber shop, and a central lounge with gas-burning fireplace. These luxurious gestures sup-port the design vision based on the idea that patients who are enticed to leave their bedrooms and motivated to participate in activities are far more likely to have a success-ful rehabilitation. Another key differentiating element of this project is its downtown location. The first truly urban nursing home in TAT’s 45+ year healthcare portfolio, it reflects not only the recent growth of White Plains, but also a changing philosophy regarding long-term care facilities. EVENTS>FLOS provided technical sponsorship and lighting expertise to the exhibition Dentro Caravaggio, on show at Palazzo Reale in Milan through Jan. 28. Twenty masterpieces by Caravaggio, on loan from leading Italian museums and top foreign galleries, are accompanied supporting material including x-rays and valuable histori-cal documents. Lighting an exhibition of this calibre is an extremely delicate process and requires a great sense of responsibility. Barbara Balestreri Lighting Design, entrusted to work at this project, chose to work with FLOS to define the best light-ing systems and fixtures for the purpose. Selected from the Flos Architectural collec-tion was the UT Spot, a LED projector mounted on three-phase tracks. The spotlight was fitted with a special LED light source that enhances the color reproduction of the works without changing their spectrum. Special custom versions of lenses, anti-glare

filters and other front acces-sories were also produced by Light Contract, the contract division in Flos Group, not only to provide maximum pro-tection for these precious and easily damaged materials, but also for better optical control and light profiling, as well as to reduce any glare for visitors to a minimum. All the lighting units are fitted with dimmers so that the right amount of light can be regulated for each work. Read More
