What is a railway station?

A railway station is a place on a railway line, where trains stop for clearing passengers and goods traffic.

Purpose of a railway station

For exchange of passengers.

For exchange of goods.

For control of train movements.

To enable the following express trains to overtake.

To enable the trains on single line track to cross from opposite directions.

For taking diesel or coal and water for locomotives.

For changing engines and running staff.

For detaching or attaching of compartments and wagons.

In emergencies such as dislocation of track due to rains or accidents.

Selection of site for a railway station Adequate land:

There should be adequate land available for the station building, not only for the proposed line but also for any further expansion. The proposed area should also be without any religious buildings.

Level area with good drainage:

The proposed site for railway station should be on a fairly level ground with good drainage arrangements. In india, maximum gradient adopted in station yard is 1 in 400, but a gradient of passengers and goods.

Proximity to town or village:

The station site should be close to the town or village as far as possible to facilitate the transport of passengers and goods.

Approach roads:

Nearby villages should be connected to the station by means of approach roads for the convenience of passengers.

Alignment:

The station should be connected to the station by means of approach roads for the convenience of passengers.

Water supply arrangements:

While selecting the site for a railway station, it should be verified that adequate water supply is available for passengers ad operational needs.

Station amenities:

Amenities like electricity, coal, diesel, etc. should be provided at the station site.

Type of station and yard:

A station may be either a through-type or terminal type station.

Role of authorities:

Before the final selection of site is made, the civil and military authorities should be consulted. It is necessary to execute the development scheme and for justification of railway project.

Facilities required at railway station:

Public requirements:

Booking office

Platforms

Suitable lights

Drinking water

Waiting rooms and retiring rooms

Sanitary arrangements, bathrooms

Inquiry office, public telephone, refreshment

Name board of the station and platforms.

Microphones to announce the arrival and departure of trains.

Cold drinking water in summer.

Traffic requirements:

Adequate traffic staff and police staff.

Proper arrangements such as staff rooms, retiring rooms, quarters etc. for staff e.g. station master, engine drivers, ticket collectors, etc.

Signals and signal cabins for controlling the movement of trains.

Sufficient number of siding to enable the movement of trains.

Suitable platforms for loading, unloading of goods and passengers.

Engine requirements:

Proper arrangements for supply of fuel and water to locomotive.

Arrangements of cleaning, examining, inspecting the locomotives.

Turn table to change the direction of locomotive.

General requirements:

Easy and comfortable approach roads to stations.

Availability of coolies on the platforms at stations.

Installation of clocks for correct time.

Guide map of city.

Big waiting halls, benches for sitting.

Classification of railway stations:

Requirement of station yard

An adequate number if platforms should be provided so that all trains can be dealt with at the same time.

It should be possible to lower the signal for the reception of trains from different directions at the same time.

In case of an engine changing direction, an engine coming from or going to a shed should cause minimum interference in the arrival and departure of trains.

There should be convenient siding where extra carriage can be stabled after having been detached from trains.

There should be provision of facilities for dealing with special traffic such as tourist and pilgrim trains, parcels in wagon loads, livestock and motor cars.

Unless all trains are booked to stop at the station, it should be possible to run a train through the station at a prescribed speed.

Washing lines, sick lines, stabling lines, etc. should be provided at the station yard.

Types of yards:

A yard is a system of tracks laid usually on a level within defined limits, for receiving, storing, making up trains, despatch of vehicles and for other purposes over which movements are not authorised by a time table.

Classification of yards:

Passenger yard

Goods yard

Marshalling yard

Locomotive yard

Passenger yard:

The passenger platform is a passenger yard.

The main function of passenger yard is to provide facilities for the safe movement of passengers and vehicle for the passengers.

At large station there may be many platforms but at small stations there is one platform near there is one platform near main line and there is one loop line.

Goods yards:

Function of goods yard

Receiving goods to be dispatched

Loading and unloading of goods

Storing and delivery of goods

Connect and disconnect trains by shunting.

Requirement of goods yard

Platforms should be protected from rain and sun.

Sufficient number of goods sidings.

Good approach roads to goods yard

Godowns for storage of goods

Loading gauges

Buffer stops

Marshalling yard:

A marshalling yard is a yard where trains and other loads are received, sorted out and new trains formed and despatched onwards.

The marshalling yards are provided at all important junction stations which act as distributing centre for various destinations.

Thus, marshalling yards are the heart that pumps the flow of commerce along the tracks.

Marshalling yards are provided at about 150 to 200 km distance.

Points to be kept in mind while designing marshalling yard The through trains should be dealt properly, i.e. shunting operations should

not interfere with the time table of regular trains.

There should be unidirectional movement of the wagons as far as possible.

The marshalling yard should be provided with all the facilities to place and withdraw wagons from various points in the local area.

The marshalling yard should be constructed at all important junctions.

The marshalling yard should be well lighted.

Various facilities like column, ash pit, turn table, weigh bridge should be provided to increase the efficiency of various operations in a marshalling yard.

There should be adequate scope for the future expansion of the marshalling yard.

The separate platforms known as tranship platforms, for exchange of goods should be provided.

Thank You
