A Quick NoteIn the following slides I have used what are called “Animations” to give more dynamic content to my Photo Essay. Most of the animations are activated upon transitioning to the new slide, but once your are done with a slide and click to leave, this clicking will activate the exiting animations rather than the transition. Because of this, to exit a slide and move onto the next, you must click TWICE. So please don’t be confused if you click and the photo disappears but you stay on the same slide with nothing but the text looking very lonely without their friend Photo.

Diversity in New York CityNew York City is famed for it’s diversity. It has multiple sections devoted to certain cultures. For example, Chinatown and Little Italy. Ever since Ellis Island built a immigration station in the late 1800’s New York City has welcomed plenty of immigration. Between 1892 and 1924 (the peak years of immigration to the United States) 22 million people came to America through Ellis Island. In 2011, 71.5% of people living in NYC were white, 17.5% were black, 1% were American Indian and Alaska Natives,7.8% were Asian and 0.1% were Pacific Islanders. Also 2.2% of the people in NYC as of 2011 were multiracial and 18% were people of Hispanic or Latino origin. The fact that most of these percentages surpass that of the whole COUNTRY is quite amazing. New York has many families of different colors and cultures. People like the city because it’s, “full of life.” as Yasmin Segato, who moved to NYC from Brazil said. New York City is big and bustling and I’ve tried my best (with my limited photography ability) to capture the essence of all people in all the world joining together in New York City.

New York is the Rainbow City.

ChinatownI have collected many photos of Chinatown,

which is a clear and obvious example of diversity in NYC. In Chinatown, there are many people of different races, including

tourists and, as the towns name suggests, Chinese. The town has many different things that suggest diversity, such as

buildings built with Chines Architecture in mind, or signs which are written in Chinese

for those who can read it. The following photos all show different ways Chinatown

shows diversity in New York City.

Little ItalyHistoric Little Italy sits right next to Chinatown. It consists of several small streets, each having Italian restaurants, and stores on the sides. As of the 2000 census, 1,211 residents claiming Italian ancestry lived in three census tracts that make little Italy. The “town” boasts street festivals with fun games and food vendors. It has gelato (Italian ice cream) and other Italian foods, along with a large Italian population. This town shows diversity by having people of different cultures (that aren’t American). In the following photos I attempted to capture Little Italy’s diversity.

Street FairsIn Little Italy, there are street fairs with plenty of games and

vendors. There are handmade magnets for sale, people selling ice cold lemonade, and games much like those at a carnival. At this

particular street fair, tinsel flowers are suspended above the festivities.

On a street in Little Italy, there are many people of different races and cultures. There are also colorful lights, sun umbrellas, and

awnings. The street is bursting with tourists and residents and is full of life.

The Streets

New York CityNew York City has people of all different cultures and races., from all different

walks of life and places. Some are from China, some are from Zimbabwe, some are from Brazil, some are from Italy, some are from… well, you get the picture.

But the important and honest fact is that New York City is a hub for people from all over the world. And that’s what makes it so special!

New York City is the rainbow city.
