    STAN GRANT – ‘WE CAN DO BETTER AUSTRALIA’

    Stan Grant is the author of ‘Talking to My Country’ a storynot just about race, or indigenous people but all of us andour shared identity. Stan does not have all the answers andhe wants people to keep on asking, ‘how can we be better?’this is what ‘Rainbow Neighbourhood’ is all about. Stan

    will share with us his insights on the question of Australiaas a multicultural safe haven of equal opportunity and theprevalence of racism.

    CONVERSATION AND CUPPA

    Provocation: Questioner: How are we totreat others?  ‘Ramana Maharshi: thereare no others’  DiscussFelicity McArdle will host our ‘Conversation and Cuppa’discussion. Our discussion contributors are Dr Red Ruby

    Scarlet, Dr Prasanna Srinivasan, Stephen Gallen, ValmaeRose and YOU, the audience. This conversation process isa tried and true strategy that supports the public buildingof knowledge and thinking. Audience members as well aspanellists will, together, build knowledge and thinking aboutinclusion...give some thought to the provocation in preparationfor the day.

    THINKING MORE DEEPLY 

    The afternoon will include the opportunity to move into smallergroups to discuss, consider and explore inclusion from a rangeof perspectives. Special guests will share their stories and lead

    deeper reflection.

     WHERE TO FROM HERE

    We will end our day with an ‘Open Space’ conversationhosted by Valmae Rose. This session will allow us to engagemore deeply and creatively about the issues that we haveexplored during the day. The agenda for the discussions inthese groups will be set by the participants.

     ABOUT THE EVENT

    Who are our families and clientsand what are their stories?Rainbow Neighbourhood  is all aboutbuilding knowledge and understanding of thewonderfully diverse people who make up oursociety.

    It is about asking questions, hearing storiesand considering how we might work bettertogether. We invite you to join us at ‘RainbowNeighbourhood’ to explore how you maybecome a facilitator of connections, a builder ofrelationships and an agent of change workingtogether for an inclusive society where everyonefeels welcome and appreciated.

    THIS DAY IS SUITABLE FOR ANYONE WORKING WITH CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN CHILDREN’SSERVICES, COMMUNITY SERVICES AND HEALTHSERVICES, OR WITH AN INTEREST IN INCLUSIONMORE GENERALLY 

     WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

    This will be a thought provoking and

    challenging event. Anyone interestedin thinking deeply and working towardsa more inclusive society is encouragedto attend.

    STAN GRANT

    In July 2015 Stan Grant, presenter andInternational Editor of Sky News in Australiawrote a piece for the Guardian Australiacondemning the booing of Adam Goodes, anIndigenous man, Australian of the Year and

    Australian rules footballer. Grant wrote: ‘toAdam’s ears, the ears of so many Indigenouspeople, these boos are a howl of humiliation.A howl that echoes across two centuriesof invasion, dispossession and suffering’.The article electrified debate about ourcountry’s treatment of its Indigenous people.The reaction encouraged Stan, the son ofa Wiradjuri man and Kamilaroi woman, tochange his career path and he now findshimself focussing on sharing his own story;the Indigenous Australian story. Stan later

    became the Indigenous Affairs Editor ofGuardian Australia and Managing Directorof National Indigenous Television. He is alsoconsidering a career in politics.

    DR FELICITY MCARDLE

    Dr Felicity McArdle is Associate Professor atCharles Sturt University, Faculty of Education,as well as Adjunct A/Professor at QUT,School of Early Childhood. She is proudto have been a teacher for many years,and has taught young children in beforeschool settings, children in the early years ofPrimary schooling, children in their final yearof Primary schooling, university undergradand postgrad students. She also supervisesscholars to completion with Masters and PhDdegrees.

    DR RED RUBY SCARLET

    Dr Red Ruby Scarlet has worked in earlychildhood for over 25 years. She is anartist, an academic and an activist. She hasconsulted on and developed early childhoodpolicy, practice and curriculum internationally,

    and has published widely. Her unique placein the field as a creative, teacher-researcherand leader enables her to bring together allof the influencing dimensions that shape earlychildhood. She is the Creative Director ofMultiVerse - an education, inclusion and artsconsultancy.

    STEPHEN GALLEN

    Stephen Gallen has nearly 25 years’experience in the early childhood field,across all service types, but with a focus inlong day care. He has also been deliveringprofessional development in the field for over

    a decade. He was a founding member ofthe QUT Student Guild Kelvin Grove Centre(School St), and has been working withemergent curriculum and related perspectivesfor many years. He is interested in howchildcare professionals and children findmeaning in their work together.

     VALMAE ROSE

    Valmae Rose started her career as anOccupational Therapist but is also a

    participatory process practitioner, andaccredited facilitator of ABCD. Highlightsof her work in recent years has been theengagement of 1500 people around theBlue Skies Vision for an Inclusive Community,coordinating the delivery of numerous state-wide sector development and policy changeimplementation initiatives, and contributingto a more collaborative culture within thecommunity service sector. Valmae spentseveral years managing National DisabilityServices Qld and is currently working atthe Queensland Council of Social Servicescontinuing to influence public policy aroundpoverty and disadvantage.

    DR PRASANNA SRINIVASAN

    Dr Prasanna Srinivasan is currently workingas a lecturer in the education faculty atMonash University. Her teaching andresearch interests include surfacing thecomplexities of engaging with juxtaposeddiscourses of multiculturalism and nationalismin educational settings using critical race

    and postcolonial theories. In the past shehas been working as a Research Fellow atthe Equity and Childhood Program, YouthResearch Centre, MGSE, The University ofMelbourne. She has extensive experience incritical research that inquires the interactionsbetween cultures, languages and power incurrent socio-political settings. She specificallyinquires the ideological colonization ofsubjective identities, and its role on identityperformances.
