Flexible OptionsGirls Ministries is built on a rich heritage that empowers

godly women with the tools to effectively disciple girls in their local church. This foundation has remained the same through the generations, although the methods required to reach the different ages changes.

The pages that follow outline a widely accepted model that leverages recognition for achieving different levels of growth throughout the time spent in the ministry. Many girls and churches love to use these tools to show the prog-ress the girls are making during their time in the ministry. These leaders keep discipleship the focus, but have a lot of fun showcasing the different achievements of the girls.

Some churches find their girls are far more interested in the relationships with godly women than they are in receiv-ing recognition for what they have achieved. Although this leader resource provides the road map for recognition, church leaders are encouraged to modify the approach as they see fit in order to provide a quality discipleship minis-try for every girl.

Should your church choose not to recognize girls for their achievements, simply use the discipleship components that are provided and ignore any instructions related to reviews, uniforms, and badges.

Listed on the next page are some of the amazing ways churches choose to use this curriculum.

There are a variety of options when it comes to format. You can also consider more than one format. For example, if you decide to meet as a small group, you can work in one

or more units at a weekend retreat. That way you can delve deeper into that topic. Consider the following formats in addition to the traditional Wednesday/midweek night option.

• Small Group: Allows for advertising of special interest topics. It also allows an opportunity to delve into one topic, related topics, or treat the group like a traditional club going through each unit’s subtopics.

• Sunday School: Allows for study and optional charted achievement. This setting can work well when midweek options are not possible.

• Ministry Breakout Groups: Uses the curriculum as a guide to open discussion and scriptural insight. Treats the activity page or journal work as optional.

• After-School Program: Makes a practical and applica-ble format to unchurched girls or girls whose schedules work best after school.

• Home School Co-Op: Provides an opportunity to teach character building and explore Christian education. This also allows homeschooled girls to enjoy time with other girls just as girls in private or public school receive.

• One-on-One Mentoring: Allows an established and defined discussion guide to open doors for mentoring and training.

• Weekend Retreats: Allows leaders to delve into specif-ic topics and invite guest speakers, add fun features, and engage in discussion breakout groups.

History of Girls Ministries . . .National Girls Ministries began in the Assemblies of God in 1955

through a girls discipleship program called Missionettes. Its focus was on developing girls and leaders through the biblically based mentoring strategy found in Titus 2 where Paul charged the church to have the older generation mentor the younger generation.

Early in the 1950s women in the church began to see a need for a pro-gram to teach missions to young women and prepare them for future involvement in ministry. The first Missionettes club was officially char-tered in January 1956. Since then, clubs continue to be organized across the United States and in many foreign countries. Along the way revisions have been made, such as age- and grade-level changes, additions, modi-fications in the achievement programs, and a program name change.

In 2007 the vision for mentoring the next generation was expanded to provide additional tools for the local church based on this same strategy. This was the birth of National Girls Ministries.

When Missionettes began, it focused on girls twelve to seventeen years old. Today’s age groups include clubs for preschool children which are known as Mpact Kids Clubs, clubs for elementary-age girls which are Mpact Girls Clubs, and clubs for middle school and high school girls which are known as Teen Girl Ministries.

The ultimate purpose of National Girls Ministries—winning girls to Jesus Christ and teaching them to live victoriously—has never changed and continues to provide direction for girls and leaders.

STATEMENT OF FAITHWe believe . . .• the Bible is the inspired and only infallible and authoritative

written Word of God.

• there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

• in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal future return to this earth in power and glory to rule a thousand years.

• in the Blessed Hope—the rapture of the Church at Christ’s coming.

• the only means of being cleansed from sin is through repen-tance and faith in the precious blood of Christ.

• regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for personal salvation.

• in water baptism by immersion.

• the redemptive work of Christ on the cross provides healing of the human body in answer to believing prayer.

• the baptism in the Holy Spirit, according to Acts 2:4, is given to believers who ask for it.

• in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a holy life.

• in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost, the one to everlasting life and the other to everlasting damnation.

HistoryThe United States Flag

The first United States flag was raised by George Washington on January 1, 1776. It had seven red and six white stripes and a blue rectan-gle with a red cross outlined in white on it. The following year, Congress voted to put thirteen white stars, representing the thirteen states, in the blue field. As new states were added, new laws provided for the addition of stars to the flag.

The original pledge was written by Francis Bellamy and was first used in 1892. The wording was changed in 1923 and 1924. Congress officially approved the pledge on December 18, 1945. On June 14, 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower signed a law adding the words under God.

The Christian FlagThe Christian flag as we know it today was envisioned by Charles C.

Overton on September 26, 1897. It stands for all that Christianity means: faith, worship, dedication, holiness, and mission. The cross symbolizes God’s love for people, shown in the death of Christ. The blue background stands for Christ’s faithfulness to His mission. The white portion stands for purity and peace.

The Girls Clubs FlagGirls Clubs began in January 1956. The Girls Clubs flag now includes

each grade-level club color in its design. The green color bar stands for Rainbows, the yellow for Sunlight Kids and Daisies, the pink for Prims, the blue for Stars, the purple for Friends, and the red for Girls Only.

The BiblePledge to the Bible

I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God’sHoly Word. I will make it a lamp untomy feet, and a light unto my path, andwill hide its words in my heart that Imight not sin against God.

SalutingWhen saying the pledge to the Bible, extend your right hand toward the Bible (palm up). This shows a love for God’s Word and your intention to follow the teachings given in the Bible.

History of the PledgeThe pledge to the Bible comes directly from the Bible itself. “Your word

is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” is found in Psalm 119:105 (NIV). Psalm 119:11 states, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

and boys ages three and up. But sometimes a child does not enter kindergarten when he or she turns five. Since children are promoted out of Rainbows when they enter kindergarten, a five-year-old who is not yet in kindergarten will need to stay in Rainbows for another year. The Rainbows Club Sponsor Guide CD-ROM provides you with enough units for children in this situation.

This Sponsor Guide CD-ROM contains curriculum and support materials for thirty-six units. Each unit has four lessons and can be completed in one month. Your Rainbows need to complete only eighteen units during their time in the Rainbows Club. You and your club may select which units you want to work on during the year.

When a child completes a unit, he or she earns a colorful unit badge to wear on his or her vest. To earn a unit badge, a child must com-plete the unit activity pages and memorize the unit memory verse. After com-pleting eighteen units, a child earns the Honor Rainbow Pin. The girls who continue in Girls Clubs should wear this pin on their

sashes. Each child should receive a certificate stating the number of units he or she has completed.

Unit ContinuityThe stories, activity pages, Take-Home Page, and music reinforce

the central truth for each unit. Each lesson is built around a Clubroom Discovery question based on the central truth for the unit. The stories and other activities for each lesson answer the Clubroom Discovery and reinforce the central truth. The program is designed to be enjoyed and easily understood by preschool chil-dren. It is also designed to meet the spiritual needs of these boys and girls.

Central ThemeRainbows Club is built around a Noah’s ark theme. A Noah pup-

pet and other puppets are available to help you present the les-sons.

Support MaterialsThree pictures of each badge animal are provided in the Reproducible Pages for use with the units. These pictures are

appropriately sized for use on finger puppets, stick puppets, and paper bag puppets, and can be reduced or enlarged for other proj-ects as well. To the right is a sample of one of those pages.

Memory VersesA CD of all the memory verse songs is available to help your

Rainbows learn their unit memory verses. Your Rainbows will enjoy singing along with this CD. The Memory Activities resource also provides ideas to help your Rainbows with their memorization. Memory verses for Rainbows are in a variety of biblical versions. We have chosen the version that will be most easily understood by a Rainbows-age child.

What Does Your Sponsor Guide Include?Your Rainbows Club Sponsor Guide CD-ROM contains thirty-six

units to choose from to lead your children. (You also have pic-tures of each of the full-color activity pages the children will complete for each unit.) The purchase of a set of activity pages for your use in preparing various visuals and activities is recom-mended.

You also have four resources on this CD-ROM full of suggested ideas for Activities and Games ; Crafts ; Memory Activities

; and Snacks . A fifth, the Reproducible Pages , contains forms and artwork that can be reproduced to help you lead your club. When you see the icon for a particular resource section, you will know you can find instructions for that particular game, snack, craft, or memory activity in the appropriate section. Each resource has an index page to help you find those instructions. Each resource is also divided into categorical subheadings to browse through if you are looking for a particular type of snack, craft, etc. The suggestions within the units are just that— suggestions. Please be creative in using the resources that suit your particular club and teaching style.

What Is in the Rainbows Activity Pages Folder? Each Rainbow in your club should have his or her own

Rainbows Activity Pages Folder. As you study each unit, the children will place activity pages in their activity books. They will build their books as they continue through the program.

What Other Helps Are Available?Although your Rainbows Club Sponsor Guide CD-ROM will give

you an abundance of material to lead your Rainbows Club, addi-tional support materials are available through My Healthy Church.

Posters—The Rainbows Club posters feature some of the animals from the badges the children will earn. They can be used on your clubroom door to identify your meeting place, or they could be used to enhance your clubroom.

The Achievement Poster is a place where the children can record the units they have completed by placing unit stickers on their rows. A new child coming into Rainbows can begin keeping track with his or her first unit completed.

All Rainbows Club posters feature the animals and Noah’s ark theme and will make your clubroom a special Rainbows meeting place. Many of your Rainbows will want to have their own Rainbows posters for their rooms at home.

Memory Verse Songs on CD—Each of the thirty-six memory verses has been put to music as a fun way for your children to learn the Scripture taught in Rainbows. You’ll want to add this CD to your resources.

Fun, club-unique decorative and incentive products—Many other items have been specially created just for Rainbows. These can be used as gifts or awards to your Rainbows and as resources to help you create a very special club for your chil-dren.

See your Girls Ministries catalog for other teaching helps.

Starting a Rainbows ClubSELECT AND TRAIN LEADERS

Select sponsors and helpers with the pastor’s approval. As soon as sponsors have been selected, provide each with a copy of the Girls Clubs Leader Training Guide. Encourage the sponsors to complete the course by correspondence or in a group training session.

PLAN THE TIME AND PLACE FOR MEETINGS

Select the place for club meetings. The best meeting place for a Rainbows Club is a room at the church.

Decide on the time and frequency of meetings that fit your situation. Many clubs meet on family night at the church. Others meet at another designated time.

PLAN FINANCING Ask your church leadership about how funds are allocated and should be accounted for. Funds may be raised in various ways, including reg-ular offerings from the children or a subsidy from the church. Some clubs charge membership dues.

Children should not be excluded from attending if they cannot give, but encourage all the boys and girls to share the cost as part of their training in stewardship.

Each club is encouraged to support its Girls Ministries district leader-ship office. Funds may be sent with the quarterly report. (Your local coordinator may prepare one report for all the clubs at your church.)

Clubroom Discipline General Guidelines

1 . Allow Adequate Time to PrepareBe sure you arrive early enough before each club meeting to set up

and be ready to greet the girls and boys as they enter. Prepare a preclub activity for them to begin when they arrive. The suggested activity cen-ters in Preclub Time were designed for nondirected play. This will keep the children occupied and let you counsel, hug, or encourage a child who may need it. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you discern your children’s needs.

2 . Set Clear BoundariesChildren need and want boundaries. Be clear about your boundaries

and expectations. Set rules in your first club meeting. Keep the rules short and simple. Post pictures illustrating the rules in your clubroom and review them regularly.

3 . Build Relationships with Your ChildrenBecome a part of your children’s lives. Be sure to talk with them at

church services, make phone calls during the week, and send encourag-ing notes in the mail. Relationships make all the difference.

Sample Club Rules

1 . Be Kind

“Be kind . . . to one another” (Ephesians 4:32).

In our club we want to be kind to everyone. That may be different from other places you go. We want everyone to leave feeling loved. We won’t let any-one call you a bad name or make fun of you. We will encourage one another.

2 . Be Respectful

“Show proper respect to everyone” (1 Peter 2:17).

Please be respectful. When someone is teaching, we show respect by listening and by waiting to talk. We show respect for our clubroom by helping to keep the room clean and nice. We show respect for one another by taking turns and sharing with one another.

3 . Do Your Best

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

(More information on disci-pline can be found in the Girls Clubs Leader Training Guide.)

Steps for Dealing with Inappropriate Behavior

in the ClubroomAlways consider the many fac-

tors influencing each child: home life, academic frustration, social acceptance, self-concept.

1 . Initiate Minimal Interaction

Look directly at the child, but do not say anything to him or her. Move physically closer to the child or remove the distraction as you teach.

2 . Advance to Moderate Interaction

Make a verbal comment. Never be sarcastic or humiliate the child. Talk one-on-one with him or her.

3 . Advance to Maximum Interaction

Inform the Girls Clubs coordi-nator of the situation. Make a mental note or written record of the child’s behavior. Set up a good behavior reward program with the child. (Diminish rewards gradually with success.)

If behavior is violent or endangering others, take neces-sary measures and follow the church policy.

Leading a Rainbow

to hrist

How do young children learn to love God and to invite Jesus into their heart and life? Preschoolers learn about God and Jesus from the people around them. Their families will be their primary reference. As his or her Rainbows sponsor, you (along with the Sunday School teacher and children’s church leader) will be an important influence. Children will watch the people around them before they begin to live actively for God.

How do sponsors do their part?First, recognize that your effectiveness in reaching a child is dependent

upon your relationship with that child. Long before your words can have an i, children have already decided how you feel about them by the way you touch, talk to, and listen to them. If they believe you accept them, you will become a significant person in their lives. They will try to please you; they will believe what you say about God’s plan for their lives. If they believe you are unhappy with them, they may interpret that as rejection and may resist what you say.

Second, become aware of the many methods you can use in Rainbows Club to heighten the child’s awareness of God and Jesus.

Display pictures of Jesus smiling at, holding, or talking to chil-dren.

Use spontaneous prayers throughout Rainbows Club to rein-force the idea that we can talk to God at any time about anything.

Hold an open Bible whenever sharing a Bible story to remind the children that these stories come from God’s Word and help us learn how God wants us to live.

Use simple, childlike words to explain spiritual truths. Young children are good “parrots.” They can repeat long words they do not understand. Even a word such as miracle can be simplified to be sure children understand its meaning. You could define miracle as “work only God can do.” Or use the definition instead of the word miracle.

Use symbolism sparingly. What mental picture do children get when they sing “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine”? The song is fun to sing and may help the child enjoy church. However, the child probably does not understand the spiritual message of the song. Use songs that allow the child to envision accurate mental pictures.

Use repetition meaningfully. Teach important spiritual truths over and over. “God loves you.” “God can help you.” “You can depend on God.” The more these truths are repeated, the more likely the young child is to believe them.

If a child seems ready to accept Jesus, speak to him or her privately. In a group setting, young children will often imitate one another whether they understand what they are doing or not. Asking Jesus to become the leader (Lord) of his or her life should be an individual decision. As you talk to children individually, you can determine how much they really understand about salvation. Help each child make a decision based on the extent of his or her understanding.

Adapted from “How Does Jesus Get into My Heart?” by Alice Murray McGee.

Awards CeremoniesQuarterly awards presentations are recommended. The graduation cere-

mony is called the Celebration. Every club should participate in this cere-mony. The ceremony should begin by recognizing all Rainbows and Honor Rainbows; then Daisies and Honor Daisies; then Prims and Honor Prims; then Stars and Honor Stars; then Friends and Friends Graduates; then Girls Only and Girls Only Graduates; and finally Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medal of Honor recipients.

The purpose of the awards ceremony is threefold:

1. To recognize all girls (and Rainbows boys) and their achievements2. To provide an evangelistic service for unchurched parents, family,

and friends3. To bring glory and honor to Jesus Christ, our Lord

Planning with ThemesDecorating your clubroom for each new unit covered can

become expensive. Completing a series of units with related ani-mals would allow you to decorate your clubroom in a theme that will continue for several months. Add small variations to the club-room for each unit to make it badge specific, but keep the main theme the same. Use your imagination to build themes and save some time and money on clubroom decoration.

Five theme ideas based solely on the types of badge animals and their habitats are included below.

Aviary ThemePossible Units to Include: Birds, Butterflies, Ladybugs, Owls,

Parrots, ToucansDecorate your clubroom like a zoo bird sanctuary. Bring in bird

houses and butterfly houses. Decorate with trees, bushes, flowers, and netting (to represent the “housing”). Other decorating ideas include bird baths, photo spot, benches, and bird cages. Use butch-er paper to create a brick/stone walkway through the “aviary.” Consider birdseed-type snacks for the children.

Farm ThemePossible Units to Include: Cats, Chicks, Cows, Dogs, Donkeys,

Ducks, Mice, Sheep, TurkeysDecorate your clubroom like a barn or barnyard. Decorate the

walls with a wooden fence and barn entrance. Use a rectangular box to build a trough. Bring in straw or hay bales. (Place plastic or

cloth sheets under the bales to protect the floor and reduce messi-ness.) Have pails for “milking” cows. Use masking tape to make an outline of a pond. Decorate with toy tractors, etc. Bring stuffed “farm” animals. Wearing overalls or a bonnet and apron will com-plete the setting.

Great Outdoors ThemePossible Units to Include: Bears, Beavers, Ducks, Frogs, Lizards,

Owls, Rabbits, Raccoons, Squirrels, TurtlesDecorate your clubroom like a pond in a forest clearing.

Decorate the walls with pine trees. Build small “mountains” out of boxes or other items in corners of the room for the children to sit on and climb. Set up a tent for the children to sit in, use masking tape to make an outline of a pond for the children to sit in, or create a fake campfire for the children to gather around for Story Time. Provide towels (or old ties) tucked into belts for the children to use as tails while pretending to be various woodland creatures. Decorate your bulletin board with items found in the mountains, and change the badge animal posted in the middle. Hiking boots, a plaid shirt, and a hunting hat will help set the outdoor stage.

Safari ThemePossible Units to Include: Elephants, Giraffes, Hippos,

Lions, Monkeys, Tigers, ZebrasDecorate your clubroom like an African wilderness/

jungle. Decorate with a grouping of trees (artificial trees/shrubs will work) in one corner of the room, a “desert” (sandbox) in another corner, and a “pond” (small kiddie pool) in another. Enlarge appropriate animal shapes (see suggestions in Crafts), paint or color, and hang on the walls. Consider wearing a pith helmet and other safari attire while completing these units.

Sea Creature ThemePossible Units to Include: Dolphins, Penguins, Sea Lions, WhalesAdditional Unit where Beach theme can be incorporated:

ToucansDecorate your clubroom like an undersea paradise. Cover the

walls with ocean waves and hang fish and seaweed from the ceil-ing. Provide a wading pool and beach toys. Host a water party (where children all wear swimsuits) with water games, beach toys, sand play, and a picnic. Decorate your bulletin board with an ocean theme and just change the badge animal posted on it. Wearing sunglasses, sunscreen on your nose, and a wide-brimmed hat will put you and the children in a watery mood.
