FITZPATRICK CLASSIFICATIONFITZPATRICK CLASSIFICATION
An acid peel could pose a higher risk of
pigmentation changes (hypo and hyper
pigmentation) in people with darker skin –
Fitzpatrick Skin Types IV, V, VI.
A thorough preparation – pre and post peel care
is important to minimize the risks.
All Fitzpatrick Skin Type clients should stay out
of the sun at least 72 hours after a peel and wear
a sunscreen daily.
Fitzpatrick Scale
The Fitzpatrick Scale (aka Fitzpatrick skin typing test or Fitzpatrick prototyping scale) is a numerical classification for the color of skin.
You will need to use this tool when giving peels because an acidpeel could pose a higher risk of pigmentation (hyper or hypo) inpeople with darker skin, Fitzpatrick Skin Types IV, V and VI.
We will review the pre and post peel protocols to minimize the risks in the following pages.
All Fitzpatrick Skin type clients, whether their skin is light or dark, should stay out of the sun (sunbathing) or long periods in direct sun) at least 72 hours after a peel and must wear an SPF daily. We recommend an SPF 30.

Fitzpatrick Skin Types & Sensitivity
The Fitzpatrick Scale categorizes your skin type from very fair (skin type I) to very dark (skin type VI). The two main factors that influence skin type are:
• Genetic disposition – which include common hereditary background• Reaction to sun exposure and tanning habits
The Fitzpatrick Skin Types also have common sensitivity to peels – the lighter the skin, the more resilient their skin is to peels, the darker the skin, the more sensitive they generally are to peels.
The common response to UV Rays for the lighter Fitzpatrick Skin Types are:
• Distended capillaries
• Possible skin cancer
The common response to UV Rays for the darker Fitzpatrick Skin Types:
• Hyperpigmentation (and possible hypopigmentation)

Exfoliation
The exfoliation of dead cells from the Stratum Corneum layer is one of the most important aspects of the corrective treatment process.
A build up of the Stratum Corneum dead cells contributes to a number of skin conditions such as:
• Dehydration
• Resistive Comedones
• Rough Texture
• Capillary Distention
• Asphyxiated skin

Enzymatic Exfoliation
Enzymatic exfoliants are protolytic - they attack & digest proteins. Specifically, enzymes digest keratin, the protein that the skin cell is composed of when it reaches the Stratum Corneum layer of the epidermal tissue.
The exfoliation process breaks down the surface resistance of the skin so that follicular impactions may be extracted and products penetrate more easily.
Enzymatic treatments enhance the appearance of the skin by smoothing the texture, lighten discoloration and brighten the complexion.

Pre-Peel Skin Preparation
You must prepare the skin prior to the peel application to rid the skin of any debris that would impede penetration of the peel.
Degreasing the skin disrupts the lipid barrier which increases peel penetration for optimal results.
Pre-Peel Degreasing Steps:
1. Soak a cotton pad or gauze with Citrus Pre Peel Treatment.
2. Wipe over the entire face and neck.
3. Allow the skin to dry before applying the peel.

How AHA’s Work
AHA’s work by disrupting the ionic bonding between cellular glue and corneocytes (dead skin cells).
Dissolving the lipid bond between cells causes the cells to ‘unglue’ and shed. You will not actually see ‘shedding or peeling’ of the skin.
AHA’s penetrate by the lipid phase of intercellular cement.
Depending on the strength of the acid, an acid exfoliation is typically deeper than an enzymatic one and is usually left on the skin for a shorter period of time, depending on the acid and the pH.

Chemical Exfoliation – Acids for Skin Peels
Exfoliation breaks down surface resistance:
- Liquefies sebum
- Follicular impactions are easier to extract
- Enhances penetration of other treatment products
Acid Peels are stronger and go deeper than enzymatic exfoliation and are generally left on for a shorter period of time, depending on the strength and pH of the peel.
Acid Peels enhance the appearance of the skin:
- Smoothes and refines the texture of the skin
- Brightens the complexion, leaves a radiant glow

PRECAUTIONSPRECAUTIONS
1. ALWAYS have your client read and sign a release form
before performing peel!!!
2. Never exceed recommended time of peel on skin!
3. Do not peel if client has unrealistic expectations
- or if your intuition tells you not to
4. Perform extraction after application of Acid
- if skin seems too sensitized, skip extractions
5. Treat every application as if it were the first application!
It is not necessary to increase application time; in fact,
you may decrease application time, depending on client’s sensitivity.
Precautions
1. ALWAYS have the client read and sign a Consent-Release form before performing a peel!
2. Never exceed the manufacturer’s recommended time of the peel on the skin! Follow the protocols!
3. Do not give the client a peel if they have unrealistic expectations of the peel or if your intuition tells you not to. Better to be safe than sorry.
4. We recommend that extraction be performed after the application of peel. If the skin is too sensitive after the peel, do not do extractions.
5. Treat every application as if it were the first application. Always consult with your client about the previous treatment. It is not always necessary to increase your application time; in fact, you may decrease your application time depending on the perceived sensitivity level.

PRECAUTIONSPRECAUTIONS
• Many Factors Affect Depth of Peel- Variance in Skin Density, Thickness - Pre Peel Homecare: Use of AHA’s, Retin-A, etc.- Previous Peel Treatments, Microdermabrasion
• To Avoid ‘Burning’ the Skin- Follow Manufacturer’s Protocols and Peel Time on Skin- Begin Client With Milder Peel then Work Up to Stronger- Continuously Ask Client for Sensitivity - scale of 1 to 10
If their number reaches 6, remove the peel - Put Clients on Appropriate Homecare 2-4 wks Prior- Moderate to Darker Skin is usually more sensitive so always go with mildest peel, least amount of time on skin
- NEVER PEEL A NEW CLIENT!!!
Precautions
There are several factors that affect the depth of the peel:
a. Variance in the skin density or thickness
b. If the client has used AHA’s or retinoid products prior to the peel
c. If the client has had peels or microdermabrasion previously
To avoid burning the skin with a peel:
a. Follow the manufacturer’s protocols and the recommended time on the skin
b. Begin your clients with a milder peel and work up to the stronger peels
c. Continuously ask the client for sensitivity- on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the most discomfort, what number are you at. If they get to 6, remove the peel.
d. Put your client on the appropriate homecare 2-4 weeks prior to the peel, such as a lightening product for hyperpigmentation and/or the ExfoGel AHA Homecare Kit.
e. Remember, moderate to dark skin is usually more sensitive so always begin with the mildest peel and the least amount of time on the skin.
f. NEVER PEEL A NEW CLIENT!!!

Masking
With the build-up of dehydrated cells out of the way, and the penetration pathways readily accessible by the swollen aqueous phase of the intercellular cement, the skin is now at its most receptive state, allowing ingredients to penetrate quite readily into the Stratum Corneum and offer the most effective and corrective action.
A treatment mask should be applied to totally cover the skin and prevent any exchange between the skin and the environment. This form of application creates a suffocation of the tissue and induces physiological processes for the rapid elimination of waste, as well as hydrate the epidermis.

PROFESSIONAL USE
Mix 2X Enzyme with Papaya Mint Infusion. Apply to face and neck with a fan brush and steam the skin. Leave on 5-7 minutes.
KEY INGREDIENT
Papain: Enzyme from papaya that dissolves and digests dead skin cells.
