About Assistance Dogs Australia Assistance Dogs Australia trains Labradors and Golden Retrievers to help people living with physical disabilities. Our dogs, after the two years it takes to train, end up undertaking tasks that may be diffi cult, if not impossible, for someone in a wheelchair to undertake – tasks such as opening and closing doors, answering the telephone, pressing the button to cross the road, retrieving dropped items such as keys, mobile phones and wallets and even getting bottles of water from the fridge!

Assistance Dogs Australia is a charity which places dogs with adults and children all over Australia. Each fully trained dog costs the organisation over $25,000 each but are placed with their recipient free of charge.

Welcome to

Thank you for your interest in taking part in our fi rst ever Dogtober. Dogtober is the new fundraising and awareness month for Assistance Dogs Australia to be held annually in October.

Tim and Roxy – An Inseparable TeamWhen Tim needs to open a door, Roxy is there to open it for him. When Tim needs something out of the fridge, Roxy will fetch it for him. If Tim falls out of his wheelchair, he can rest assured that Roxy will raise the alarm with her bark!

Roxy is Tim’s second service dog, helping Tim, day in and day out for over a year, making it easier for him to lead an independent life. “She does all the physical stuff like open and close doors, get the phone and if I drop things on the fl oor she’ll pick them up” Tim says.

Tim uses a wheelchair after injuring his spine in a swimming accident. Tim was given Roxy by Assistance Dogs Australia after his fi rst service dog, Buster, went into retirement. “Roxy gives me the ability to do things on

my own without having to necessarily ask someone to help me. Roxy, being female, naturally likes to shop – she is great at the supermarket and helps me get the groceries off the shelf and into my lap.”

Tim says “I am a proud Ambassador of Assistance Dogs Australia and plan on taking part in Dogtober. I would encourage you to also take part and help Assistance Dogs Australia change someone’s life like Roxy has changed mine”.

Celebrity Chef and Dogtober Ambassador, Janelle Bloom, shares with us a recipe for some great dog-bone cookies. Below is a recipe for ‘human’ cookies but make sure to visit our Dogtober website for more recipes, including one for dogs, so no-one misses out in joining in on Dogtober!

Janelle Bloom is one of this countries most loved food writers and authors, not to mention a dog lover. She wants to encourage us all to cook more using fresh ingredients and stop opening up packets and bottles full of preservatives. Janelle believes cooking begins with confi dence and a little patience, it does not have to be complicated.

Dogtober ‘Dogs Breakfast’ Biscuits (for humans!)Makes 20200g butter, softened1 cup caster sugar1 tsp vanilla essence1 egg yolk2 tbs milk2 cups plain fl our, sifted200g milk chocolate, melted100g white chocolate, melted

THINKING OF HOLDING A ‘DOG’S BREAKFAST’ IN DOGTOBER?

THINKING OF HOLDING A ‘DOGSTACLE COURSE’ OR ‘DOG OLYMPICS’DURING DOGTOBER?

“When I was asked to be involved in Dogtober I jumped at the chance as we are a family of dog lovers. This is a great charity and though times are tough, they are much tougher for people with physical disabilities, so enjoy morning tea with family and friends and give generously to this amazing cause!”Janelle Bloom.

1. Preheat oven to 170°C fan forced. Grease and line 4 baking trays with baking paper.2. Using electric mixer, cream butter, sugar and vanilla until pale and creamy. Add the egg yolk and milk and

beat until well combined. Add the fl our and mix on low speed until dough starts to come together. Use your hands to bring the dough together in the bowl. Then transfer to a lightly fl oured surface and knead dough until smooth.

3. Cut dough in half. Roll each piece out between baking paper until 3mm-thick, refrigerate until fi rm.4. Using the template below cut as many dog bone shape biscuits as you can from each piece of dough. Place

biscuits onto trays. Press leftover dough together and repeat. Refrigerate biscuits for 10 minutes until fi rm.

5. Bake two trays at a time for 10 minutes, swapping the trays over after 7 minutes or until light golden. Allow biscuits to cool on trays for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat until all biscuits are baked.

6. Spread milk chocolate over half the biscuits and sandwich together with remaining biscuits. Spread milk chocolate over top of each biscuit and allow to set. Spoon white chocolate into snap lock bag, snip off one corner and pipe polka dots over the biscuits. Allow to set then tie with a ribbon to decorate.

Assistance Dogs Australia only uses positive reinforcement in training their dogs. I also encourage you to ‘take the lead’ and make this a fun experience for yourself and your dog. You will both benefi t in the end!

To start getting your dog involved you fi rst need to fi nd out what motivates your dog – is it a treat, is it a favorite toy or is it your affection? Every dog is different and they all have their own loves in life!

Once you have established what motivates your dog start by using your dogs basic obedience with commands such as ‘come’, ‘wait’ and ‘sit’ with the reward when your dog successfully completes the task.

Now it is time to move on to one of the new challenges. Make it fun for your dog and encourage them all the way. For example training your dog to jump over an item can be easy if done correctly. Start by laying the object on the ground and leading your dog over it – reward them when they succeed. Once this is mastered slowly raise the height of the object, step by step, until they have completed each level. Continue until the object is at the correct height.

Never ask your dog to jump over something that is taller than its own height. Only train your dog for 10 – 15 minutes at a time. If it’s not working, leave the training and come back to it at another time.

In no time your pooch will be ducking, weaving, jumping and, best of all, enjoying quality time with you.

Animal Behaviourist Dr Joanne Righetti explains how to get your dog interested.
