DECEMBER 2015 This week we celebrate the beginning of the Advent season. It is the beginning of the liturgical year and a time of preparation for Christmas. On December 1 st we began the day with an Advent liturgy in the gym with all students and staff. As we journey through the Advent season we will celebrate as a faith community and remember that we can see Jesus in the small things that happen in our daily lives. Everyday teachers work with students to integrate our district faith theme of ‘Walking Humbly With God’ into many lessons. Upcoming Advent celebrations at the church and classroom activities all contribute to this faith theme as do all of the supporting activities you do at home. Thank you for your support of our Catholic schools and for helping us teach our children to be peacemakers. First Sunday of Advent Prayer Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Second Sunday of Advent Prayer Merciful God, who sent thy messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Third Sunday of Advent Prayer Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, and a world without end. Fourth Sunday of Advent Prayer We ask you, Almighty God, to purify our consciences by your daily visitation, that when your Son our Lord comes he may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. May the joy of the season shine through in all of us as we ‘Walk Humbly With God’. On behalf of the staff at Blessed Cardinal Newman School, May the blessings of the season be upon you.

DECEMBER 2015

This week we celebrate the beginning of the Advent

season. It is the beginning of the liturgical year and a

time of preparation for Christmas. On December 1st we

began the day with an Advent liturgy in the gym with all

students and staff. As we journey through the Advent

season we will celebrate as a faith community and

remember that we can see Jesus in the small things

that happen in our daily lives. Everyday teachers work

with students to integrate our district faith theme of

‘Walking Humbly With God’ into many lessons.

Upcoming Advent celebrations at the church and classroom activities all contribute to this faith

theme as do all of the supporting activities you do at home. Thank you for your support of our

Catholic schools and for helping us teach our children to be peacemakers.

First Sunday of Advent Prayer

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light,

now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last

day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life;

through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Second Sunday of Advent Prayer

Merciful God, who sent thy messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our

salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of

Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Third Sunday of Advent Prayer

Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our

sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom,

with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, and a world without end.

Fourth Sunday of Advent Prayer

We ask you, Almighty God, to purify our consciences by your daily visitation, that when your Son our Lord comes

he may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns

with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

May the joy of the season shine through in all of us as we

‘Walk Humbly With God’.

On behalf of the staff at Blessed Cardinal Newman School,

May the blessings of the season be upon you.

‘NSTEP

On November 24th, the Energetic Eagle

Squad was hard at work preparing and

delivering food for our first school wide

SNACK ATTACK. Not only did they learn

about the preparation of the healthy snack,

they also learned about strict sanitation,

practiced their mathematics and public

speaking skills. They did all this within a

community of caring where students from

every grade worked together cooperatively.

For those of you wishing to make this snack

at home, it is very simple. Spread a whole

wheat pita with plain Greek yogurt seasoned

with Greek spice. Top this with a coleslaw

mix of red and white cabbage plus shredded carrots. Serve the pita along with mini carrots.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

St. Vincent de Paul is very appreciative for everything our school sends to them. We fill their

cupboards when their food stocks are at their lowest. Our WE DAY committee supported this

year’s district faith theme “WALK HUMBLY WITH GOD “gathering, counting and organizing all

the donations!

WRESTLING

Wrestling season is off to a great start. Our wrestling team did very well in the Our Lady of

Peace Tri-Meet and gained valuable experience. Up next for our wrestlers, is the City Finals at

Notre Dame High School on December 11th & 12th. Go Eagles!

LEARN TO RUN CLUB

Congratulations to the “Learn to run 5K” club! Everyone completed their

goal just in time as the weather turned into winter. We completed many

kilometers of running since September and saw a lot of wildlife on our

beautiful paths. Our favorite was the Eagle! Watch for the spring “Learn to

Run 5K” starting in April!

Ms. Schmidt

Grade 8 & 9 CTF students

BOAT RACE TEAM

Congratulations to the 2015 Cardboard Boat Race team. We had 3 teams go to SAIT, build a

boat out of cardboard and duct tape, then jump inside and race across the pool. Not only did

we learn a lot about designing, and building on a timed challenge, we learned that cardboard

doesn’t float for long. It was a lot of fun! One of our teams placed 2nd out of the 40 teams from

Calgary! Check out more pictures at the Alberta Skills website

ADVENT CELEBRATION

ST. ALBERT THE GREAT CHURCH

Division 1 (Grades 1, 2, & 3)

Monday, December 7th at 7:00pm.

Division 2 (Grades 4, 5, & 6)

Monday, December 14th at 7:00pm.

We ask that students arrive at 6:40pm and meet their

teacher in the basement of the church.

LATE STUDENTS

We understand that in some cases students may be

coming from appointments, however, a significant amount

of student lates are caused by sleeping in or losing track of

time. When a student is late, they must fill out a late slip at

the office. On any given day we can have up to 50 students

who are late. Although students may be arriving in the door

a few minutes after the bell it can sometimes be over 10

minutes before they arrive in their classroom. This is very

disruptive to student learning. Please note that the first bell

in the morning is at 8:20am, and students are expected to be in their classroom at 8:25am.

Students should not entering the building at 8:25am.

Winter is here, and that means ALL STUDENTS need to be dressed with the proper winter

wear. We ask that you monitor their clothing before they leave for school in order to ensure

their warmth and safety while outside. Your cooperation in ensuring that your child has proper

winter clothing is greatly appreciated. Outdoor temperatures are closely monitored and

students are permitted to remain inside when temperature and wind chill become too extreme

(-17 degrees). However; it’s important to remember that the school doors are not open until

shortly before the morning bell. We appreciate your help and support in this matter.
