Summary of Research The research in my group is concentrated in two areas: flash sintering, and high temperature ceramic- matrix-composites from polymer derived ceramics.

Flash sintering was first discovered in our laboratory in 2010. The original paper is currently being cited at the rate of 100 citation per year, which confirms that it continues to spread at many laboratories around the world. Large programs centered around this topic are developing in Germany and in Japan.

There is emerging interest in using the method to process ceramics for next generation solid state Li-ion batteries, which is often not possible by conventional techniques.

The scientific and technological of this emerging field are likely to be wide-ranging. They are already spreading into phonon physics, defect physics, and the formation of phases that are far from equilibrium with unusual properties. The flash effect has been demonstrated in single crystals, which is providing new insights into the atomistic mechanisms.

In flash sintering ceramics can be processed in just a few seconds at temperatures well below 1000oC (nominally several hours are needed at 1400oC. Recently we have demonstrated reactive flash sintering whereby multicomponent oxides (for example LiLaZrAlO for ceramic Li+ batteries) can be processed from constituent powders in just a few seconds. Spot flash sintering is being evaluated for (in-situ) additive manufacturing of ceramics.

The work on Polymer Derived Ceramics is moving to hybrid oxide-non oxide ceramics which can be used as environmental barrier coatings. We have developed a nanoscale additive manufacturing method for the fabrication of defect free ceramic-matrix-composites in just two hours or so (First published: 08 October 2015 https://doi.org/10.1111/jace.13946)

Summary of Teaching On the one hand I am interested in teaching fundamental science oriented courses in Materials Science and Engineering at the senior undergraduate/first year graduate level, and on the other hand freshman or early undergraduate courses that broaden students’ perception of academic learning and professional growth; A First Year Seminar Course taught in Fall 2019, called “In the Footsteps of da Vinci”, is an example of such a course. I would remain interested in expanding the scope of the da Vinci course perhaps to first year graduate level. https://www.timescall.com/2019/12/26/cu-boulder-class-inspired-by-da-vinci/
