Bottle Talk Feature Of The Month

Tom Walsh shows his nice Coca-Cola

chewing gum jar. Jars like this, with

the original lid, are extremely hard to

find. If you only have the jar, expect

to deal out another two or three

hundred dollars for an authentic lid.

The ad shown below shows the

chewing gum that was sold from these

jars. If you want the chewing gum to

go with your jar, you might want to

start saving your money. The gum

might very well have more value than

the jar and the lid.

SHOW AND TELL

Pem Woodlief has one of the most varied and interesting collections of old and antique items that

you will ever see. It is always interesting to see what he brings to the meeting. The rare canning jar

above is from Pem's collection. The Ball canning jar has an unusual stamped bale lid pressed from

sheet metal. This type jar was manufactured for only two years...1898 and 1899. Why don't you

show up at the next RBC meeting and see what's going on. You'll be glad you did.

This colorful little ink was purchased in England on a recent trip by RBC member Whitt

Stallings. This nice teal colored ink was purchased for less than $25.00. It was accidentally

knocked off the shelf onto one of Whitt's nice Raleigh Dispensary flask. The cost of owning

this little ink bottle shot quickly to a new level. Maybe it was a ghost that did it.

This nice cobalt blue quart Stafford's ink

bottle was shown by Whitt Stallings. These

were used in schools during the early 1900's

to fill the smaller ink wells. The pour spout

made the job much easier.

Sterling Mann recently purchased this rare

Civil War Reunion flag honoring the 4th

Virginia Regiment, Winchester, Va. The flag

shows all the battles in which this regiment

participated. This is an extremely nice piece.

The photo doesn't show just how nice this

historic piece is. Thanks Sterling for sharing

this with us.

Jerry Higgins brought this nice art deco BEAR CAT soda bottle from Maryville, Mo. for "show and tell". The art work and detail in this bottle is quite unusual.

Tom Walsh brought this unusual Corn exhibition jar to "show and tell". In 1878 Burlington and Missouri Railroad began selling excess land to draw settlers to areas along their rail line. These jars, full of the best and largest corn kernels, were exhibited to show the growing potential of the land.

Pem Woodlief was looking around some

of his newly acquired real estate and

uncovered this nice Henderson

Dispensary bottle. He is looking forward

to getting back to the property with his

probe and shovel. No... He does not

want any help.

Items from Jack Murdock's Sports Memorabilia Collection

Jack is an avid collector of N.C. sports memorabilia. We were treated with a look at his collection of early pennants. No matter what school you have an allegiance to I think you will be amazed at this collection. You probably can guess.....Jack loves those Demon Deacons.

READER FEEDBACK

This unusual piece of Coca-Cola memorabilia was sent to me by Bottle Talk reader and friend, Bill Baab, from August, GA. This is quite an unusual envelope with a Coca-Cola letterhead and the Hires advertisement on the back. Maybe some of our N.C. historians can explain the relationship that might have existed in 1913 between Coke and Hires. Thanks to Bill for this nice item and for his help and encouragement to me when I first started as Editor of Bottle Talk.

This is one of my favorite Pepsi advertisement pieces from the early 70's. It was first featured on the October, 2007 cover of BOTTLE TALK.
