Peel House Capital Campaign Committee Update

The Capital Campaign Committee continues to move forward with recruiting of volunteers and planning for the campaign. Terry Hjelkrem has also agreed to fill the final com-mittee leadership position. He will be heading the Inspiration group. Thank you, Terry, for agreeing to serve.

Over the next three months, there will be a sig-nificant amount of work going on behind the scenes by the volunteers. All of this will lead up to the actual campaign later this fall. There will be many opportunities for questions and comments from the congregation leading up to the actual campaign. One very important element I want to stress about the campaign: this will not be a high pressure “ask” type pro-cess. This campaign is about the stewardship we feel in our hearts toward our campus and specifically, the Peel House asset. I say asset because that is what we, as a congregation, overwhelmingly determined it to be. Our con-gregational vote to move forward was a deci-sive acknowledgment by us that it is an asset and not a liability that we let slip into disrepair and eventually demolish. Our Capital Cam-paign is the opportunity for each of us to fol-low through on that decision. If you have any questions or comments about the project or the campaign, you can reach me at [email protected] or 719-330-0762 or you can contact Pastor Carrie or Pastor Travis.

COMING SOON God’s Work Our Hands Sunday

This is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America — one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. For the past three years, thousands of members throughout this church have dedicated one day to serve communities in ways that share the love of God with all people. This year we will team up with all of the ELCA churches in Colora-do Springs to work together in building relation-ships and community through service in God’s name. T-shirts will be distributed and should be worn that day. We will have snacks and bottled water that you can take to your sites.

Sign-ups will be taken at the Welcome Center, on the opportunity sheet, or by emailing Pastor Carrie at [email protected]. The first week of September you will receive a letter that will include the site you have been assigned and additional information regarding that assignment.

The mission of the Women’s Ministries at First Lutheran Church is to promote spiritual growth and health through living faithfully as children of God, sharing with others the love and gifts that God has given us in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Circle Groups will be starting up again in September. Rebekah Circle meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month in Luther Hall from 9:30 am to 11 starting September 10. Lydia Circle meets the 2nd Monday of each month in the Fireside Room from 6:30 pm to 8 pm starting September 9.

Contact Marcia Foret at 632-8836 or [email protected] for more information.

The Heart of Christianity Bible Study - with Pastor Bob

In this study we will use The Heart of Christianity by Marcus Borg, former Professor of Religion and Culture at Oregon State University. Borg wants to show us, as today's thinking Christians, how to discover a life of faith by reconceptualiz-ing familiar beliefs. The study will be led by Pas-tor Bob in the upstairs Conference Room. To sign up go to the Welcome Center and make a payment of $13.00 for the book. Deadline for registration is September 15.

Rally Day 6th - 9th grade classes • 6th & 7th grades will meet in the Peel

House • Confirmation - new 8th graders and

returning 9th graders will meet in the Fireside Room

FROM THE PASTOR

Congregational Meeting, August 31 & September 1

Two years ago, interim pastor Brian Mortenson launched a project to improve the lighting in the sanctuary. After much research, and after discus-sions with a number of lighting companies, the church council approved moving forward with a nationally-respected lighting contractor, the pro-ject to be paid for with existing funds from the Me-morial Fund. This fund is designated for improve-ments to the sanctuary, and has more than enough to cover the entire project. This summer we learned that improvements to our electrical sys-tem, which must be completed prior to installing upgraded lighting, will cost more than expected. The lighting will cost $121,856.20 and the electrical upgrades will cost $56,700. This puts the cost of the overall project over the $150,000 threshhold in the church constitution – so a congregational vote to approve the additional expense is required. The good news is that the money is already in the bank and intended for this purpose. The Memorial Fund will have a balance of $92,850 for future projects. Please mark August 31 and September 1 on your calendars for a brief meeting after each service.

Much has been shared in the two years prepar-ing for this project, but here are some basic re-minders:

The Need for Upgrades • The existing system doesn’t provide an ade-

quate level of illumination; the sanctuary seems dim.

• Focus should be directed toward the chan-cel during services, but it is darker than the nave.

• The side-wall sconces create a glare in the peripheral vision of the congregation.

• Lighting for special services (i.e. GOLA) must be provided by temporary, portable fixtures.

• One bank of ceiling lights no longer re-sponds reliably to control inputs.

• The system responds erratically when sub-jected to static electricity.

House Lighting • The proposal replaces the current incan-

descent bulbs along the ceiling with LED fixtures. Sixty of these, at 20 watts each, will save over 5,760 watts of power per bulb per year compared to the current 200-watt bulbs – about $1,664 total per year. The replacement fixtures respect the archi-tect’s original “look” for the house lighting.

• Side-wall sconces may either be dimmed to reduce glare, or the glass shades may be replaced with solid shades that would di-rect the light up and down on the wall for a dramatic look.

Page 7: RALLY DAY - Amazon S3 · to cover the entire project. This summer we learned that improvements to our electrical sys-tem, which must be completed prior to installin© up©raded lihtin©,

6

Chancel and Choir Loft Lighting • The proposal includes two sections of

ceiling-mounted trusses to provide lighting positions for both the chancel and the choir loft.

• LED stage-lighting fixtures provide fo-cused light, long life and low energy consumption, and the ability to enhance services with colored light as desired.

Special Event Lighting • Additional column-mounted rigging

positions, along with dedicated DMX and power circuits in the chancel, will allow easy integration of the special GO-LA fixtures.

• The system will also support the new LED footlights added this past spring.

Infrastructure • Centrally-located, computer-driven

dimming reduces background noise in the sanctuary.

• The system also handles emergency lighting with instant transfer in event of power loss.

• Basic presets may be activated from wall panels; for more control, a sophisticated lighting console may be connected to “drive” the entire system.

• Because the system is essentially, flexi-ble fixtures may be freely added, sub-tracted, or changed out as required. Specialized fixtures (moving lights, etc.) needed for events may be rented or pur-chased and easily integrated into the system.

Call Committee Formed for Associate Pastor/Deacon

Council has approved a call committee to begin searching for an Associate Pastor or Deacon to fill the role that will be vacant when Pastor Bob Kippley retires next February. Pastor Carrie Baylis will move into the Pastor of Pastoral Care and Special Events role, and we will search for a rostered leader to take charge over our First Third of Life ministry. The call committee members are: • Walt Aufderheide • Alison Kennedy • Jason Fox • Molly Ketchell • Dennis Burklund • Chris Beyer • Pastor Travis The committee will receive names from the synod, interview candidates and recommend someone to the church council who will in turn recommend someone to the congrega-tion. Please pray for each of these members as they discern God’s will on our behalf.

Did you get our email?

We have created a new weekly e-mail to the congregation with announcements, links to the sermon, Ekklesia, online giving and more. E-mail allows us to share more photos and videos as well as highlight the key announce-ments each week. This will be in addition to the Ekklesia and will include some of the same content. The first one was sent Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at 7 am. Check all your email folders to see if you received it. If you didn’t and would like to, please send your e-mail ad-dress to [email protected] and let us know you want to sign up.

Schools, shelters, social service agencies, and other professionals are able to make a refer-ral for a student to come and shop for needed clothes, school supplies and sports equipment in a store-like setting. You can help by providing new backpacks and supplies through August. Each backpack is filled with a scientific calculator, permanent markers, 3-ring binders, highlighters, folders, red and black pens, notebooks, and more. Please return your donation to the drop-off box in the Gathering Place.

“Peer Ministry Leadership, this Good Samari-tan kind of leadership, is a lifestyle of caring, welcoming and affirming every neighbor. We believe that all are called to a vocation of lov-ing others, as a response to a loving God, through a relationship with Jesus Christ.” Adults and high school youth will be trained together. This will be an 8-hour one-day train-ing, plus mentoring sessions with a key lead-er. This is for adults responsible for equipping and supporting student leaders, plus key high school youth who help build enthusiasm and an infrastructure for continuing PML leader-ship groups to minister to high school stu-dents. Learn to help others! Sign ups are available online, in the bulletin, or by dropping an email to Pastor Carrie at [email protected].

“Youth are either leading or leaving!” Youth have either found that their church needs them for something of mean-ing and purpose or they have gone to other groups, who say they need them. Those groups may be very good groups, but they are not the church.

This is about creating a church culture with heart , filled with people who love, because Christ first loved us. It is time to claim and enhance that caring, welcoming, and affirming people is all about each person following their spiritual calling. You will take with you tools for small group ministry, youth ministry, adult ministry and how to use these gifts in your daily life!

August Food & Clothing Ingathering

Donating food and clothing is the perfect opportunity to make a difference in the world. By making a difference in someone’s life, you are making a statement and a contribution to society. Especially needed this quarter is bottled water, pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter and canned soup. Clothing needs are men’s pants, warm weather hats, t-shirts, tennis shoes and blankets. All of the items donated in August will benefit Ecumenical Social Ministries.

Personal care items may be taken to the specially marked box in the Gathering Place closet and clothing will be collected at the Carriage House (single gray door off the alley). All nonperishable food items may be placed in the thruway (south door off the alley). Pet food is also being accept-ed. No out-of-date food items, please.

Woodcarvers Need Help

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could give comfort to someone - maybe everyday, to someone you don’t even know, to someone who lives in a nursing home who may not get many visitors. You can! Join the Woodcarvers and help us make comfort birds. No carving necessary. Help us sand and paint birds. This project has been funded by a Thrivent grant. Enjoy fellowship while providing comfort to someone. Muffins & pizza, too! For more information, contact Tom Mellott at [email protected], or sign up online.
