Bulldogs to host bi-district playoff Nov. 13 against Pearland Dawson TheLaPorteHighSchoolvarsityfootballearnedthechancetohostthefirst-round 6-A playoff game at Bulldog Stadium with a win over the ChannelviewFalcons on Friday, Nov. 6. ThegamewillberememberednotjustbecauseitwasamongthehighestscoringgamesinLPHShistory—withtheDogswinning55-49—butalsoforthedensefogthatrolledinoffofGalvestonBay,makingitdifficultforBulldogfanstoevenseetheFalconssupportersontheotherside. TheBulldogswillnowfacethePearlandDawsonEaglesinabi-districtmatchsetfor7p.m.Friday,Nov.13.Ticketsarecurrentlyonsale in theAthleticOfficewhich is temporarily located in theLaPorteHighSchoolFieldHouse.Reservedseatingis$10,generaladmissionforadultsis$7,andgeneraladmissionforstudentsis$4.
TicketsareavailableMondaythroughThursdayfrom8a.m.to4p.m.andFridayfrom8a.m.tonoon. TheBulldogs,representingDistrict21-6A,advancetothefirstroundwithan8-2record,withtheEagles,representing22-6A,at7-3. Prior to the game, senior band members, Chatos, cheerleaders and footballplayerswererecognizedaspartofSeniorNightactivities.SeniorswereintroducedandthenescortedthroughthelargeBulldogrun-throughbyfamilymembers. LaPorteISDalsopaidtributetoLaPortePoliceDepartmentLt.GaryRice,whoisretiringfromthedepartmentafter42years.Rice,whohasbeenacornerstoneoftheLaPortefootballgamesecurityforceforseveraldecades,wasescortedontothefieldbyLPHScheerleadersandsalutedbyhisLPPDcolleagues.

Seniors, Rice honored as Bulldogs defeat Channelview, advance to playoffs

La Porte ISD parents and students had the opportunity to learn more aboutcurrenttrendsandrisksassociatedwithdruguse,particularlysyntheticdrugs,duringtheRallyforaDrug-FreeLaPorteheldonNov.9intheLaPorteHighSchoolgym. TheeventwassponsoredbyLaPorteISDandtheLaPortePoliceDepartment. The rally began with performances by the La Porte High School Band,cheerleaders andChatos,with the JROTCColorGuardpresenting the colors andtheLPHSChoirandAmericanSignLanguageclassperformingthenationalanthem.LaPorteElementarySchool’sAfter-SchoolCentersforEducation(ACE)teamthenperformedacheerdemonstratingtheircommitmenttostayingdrug-free. ToddSchoppe,LPHSprincipal,madeopeningremarks,andMasonStaes,LPHSseniorclasspresident,servedasmasterofceremonies. ChiefBrandonTorres,directorofsafetyandsecurityforMontgomeryISD,wasthefirstguestspeaker,explainingthatcommunitiesarenowfacedwiththechallengesofsyntheticmarijuanaandotherdrugs.Inearly2015,hiscommunitysufferedthelossofateenagerafterusingsyntheticdrugs,andhewantstoshareinformationwithparents, teachers, schooladministratorsandothers tohelppreventother tragedies
fromoccurring. “Welostonelastyear,”Torressaid.“That’sonetoomany.” Heencouragedparentstoaskquestions,tobeteammemberswiththeirschooldistrictsandtalktolocallawenforcementofficialsiftheyhavequestionsorconcerns. “Wehavetobeproactiveparents,”hesaid.“Wecan’tbetheirfriends.” TorreswasfollowedbyTonyaBauerandherdaughter,Emily,whodiscussedEmily’sexperienceafterusingsyntheticmarijuana.Emilyhadseveralstrokesandwasnotexpectedtolive;todayshecontinuestofightdailytorecoverherlife.TheBauerfamilysharestheirstorieswithotherstotrytopreventotherteensfromtryingsyntheticdrugs.Inadditiontotalkingtothepublic,theymaintainaSAFE(SyntheticAwarenessforEmily)websiteatwww.safeforemily.org. LPHS students explore opportunities at the Career and College Expo
About 200La Porte ISD students talkedwith business, industry and collegerepresentativesabouttheirfuturecareerplansduringtheCareerandCollegeExpoheldatLaPorteHighSchoolonOct.29. The eventwas a project of the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce’sWorkforce Development Committee and the La Porte High School Career andTechnicalEducationDepartment. DebbieSeibert,careerand technicaleducationcoordinator forLaPorteHighSchool,explainedthattheeventwaschangedfromdaytimetoeveningthisyeartohelptoconnectcollegeandbusiness/industryrepresentativeswhowillplayaroleinstudents’futurecareerpaths.
“Inordertobesuccessfulafterhighschool,youhavetobealife-longlearner,”Seibert said. “This format gave us the chance to showcase awide array of post-secondarytrainingopportunitiesinavarietyofcareerpathways.” Seibertaddedthattheeveningeventalsoenabledparentstoattend,givingthemtheopportunitytobeinvolvedintheirchild’sselectionofaprospectivecareerchoice. “We are very grateful to theLaPorte-BayshoreChamber ofCommerce, ourbusiness and industry partners, and our students’ parents formaking this event asuccessfulone,”shesaid.“Opportunitiessuchasthisarepricelessforourstudentsastheymakeimportantdecisionsabouttheirfuturecareers.”

Amber and Chris are 2015 graduates of La Porte High School who were hired into Dow’s apprenticeship program, through which they are working at Dow while the company pays for their college. Amber and Chris interviewed for the program after participating in mock interview sessions that were also a project of the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce’s Workforce Development Committee. Yost noted the strength of the interviewing skills of La Porte High School students who applied for the apprenticeships after participating in the mock interviews.
