What is Ramadhan?

Ramadhan is a special Month in which Muslims fast, learn self-restraint and strengthen their Eemaan. It is just like a school whose aim is reminding Muslims to be good, patient and worship Allah swt alone with sincerity. Ramadhan is the month in which the Quran was revealed to the last Prophet, the Prophet Muhammed .Not only this but also Ramadhan is the month of forgiveness and during it the gates of Jannah are opened, and the gates of the hellfire are closed.

Ramadhan starts when the New Crescent Moon, HILAL, is sighted

And it’ is more or less like this subhanAllah .

This sighting marks the beginning of the Ramadhan.

The shape of the Moon that we see from the Earth varies everyday. So in the middle of Ramadhan the Moon will be a full Moon like this:

It is shaped like a complete disc subhanAllah.

Then it starts getting smaller and smaller till getting like this: This is called last Quarter.

To sum up it is like this:

MOON ACTIVITY PROJECT

Imagine this is a night sky. Create your own New Crescent Moon and glue it on. You can create your own Moon shapes from white or yellow paper/card/ or glitter, nice sweet wrappings, cuttings, scraps or kitchen foil. Cut in half a circle and then again each half into two segments and number them on the back if possible. Add one new segment each 3-4 days; calculate that full moon occurs between 14-15 days after the New Moon. Remove segments or color it dark blue, one each 4-5 days End of Ramadhan.

The picture can be decorated gluing some coloured paper to shape mountains for example, or sticking stars or drawing them with markers if children are able to do it.

It is the time for fasting in Ramadhan but it is also the time for listening to Quran, memorizing new ayat, doing some Ramadhan craft and having fun playing . Here are some examples of day time scenes:

Many children go to Arabic classes to learn

Qu’ran and Prophets’lives.

Children just have fun.

Children help their Mum and Dad cooking.

During Night Time Muslims pray sometimes and they put their bodies to rest. During Ramadhan they wake up for having Suhoor and then pray salat al Fajr. Here are some Night Time scenes:

Parents put their children to sleep!

Wherever they are Muslims, wake up to Pray

This is the story of a nice child just like you whose name is Abdullah. Abdullah is a clever boy and he is very eager to learn more about Ramadhan. It was not a long time ago since it was Shaban and now it is already the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar, the Month of Ramadhan. One day he came back from school and said to his Mum:

Ummi Ummi assalam alaikum A friend of mine at school asked me why Muslims fast. Ummi tell me more and more please….I told him that we fast because Allah subbhanahu wa taala ordered the Messenger of Allah salla Allahu aleyhi wa sallem to fast the whole month of Ramadhan and that it’s written in the Qu’ran Ummi, but Why?

Oh habibi, you are right machallah! Why? Allah subbhana wa Taala never orders something to the Muslim Ummah but for its own good! Benefits are many….fasting will make the good Muslim feel stronger in Iman, he will feel closer to Allah subbhana wa Taala and happier to obey Him inshallah and….

Page 13: +Ramadhan Calendar - Islamic · PDF fileAllah salla Allahu aleyhi wa sallem to fast the whole month of Ramadhan and that it’s written in the Qu’ran Ummi , but Why? Oh ... Allah

12

Oh Ummi I’m so happy with that! I’m looking forward to getting older so I can fast, can I Ummi? Oh Yes, I’m going to give it a try!!! Inshallah! I’m big enough! I pray a lot in Ramadhan together with Abi , I even go to salat al taraweeh. Yes, I’m big! My Eemaan gets stronger and stronger day by day and I feel closer to Allah the Almighty. Tell me more please Ummi!

Ah! Machallah la quwata ila billa! Sweet heart! Come here and give me a kiss. I knew you were clever but Machallah you are really astonishing me! If you want to know more, I tell you more. Well, you should know that when you fast, you learn what hungry needy people feel having no food, and that’s why we should always help people, share and give charity. Do you remember when we went to the market for the whole day and you were so tired and hungry that your stomach started grumbling?? Imagine needy people starving because they do not have any food at all!!

Page 14: +Ramadhan Calendar - Islamic · PDF fileAllah salla Allahu aleyhi wa sallem to fast the whole month of Ramadhan and that it’s written in the Qu’ran Ummi , but Why? Oh ... Allah

13

Allah Al Musta’an! So Ummi, what can I do to help my needy brothers?

Well, you could start sharing your toys with them Abdullah and once grown up giving them charity. Well, you could start even now. We can make a charity box where saving some money for the poor. Abi could bring you to the Masjid one day and show you how to give charity . Your left hand should not see what your right hand does! The Masjid will offer that money to needy people.

Inshallah Ummi inshallah

Fasting teaches self

control as well habibi.

Page 15: +Ramadhan Calendar - Islamic · PDF fileAllah salla Allahu aleyhi wa sallem to fast the whole month of Ramadhan and that it’s written in the Qu’ran Ummi , but Why? Oh ... Allah

14

What’s that Ummi? Control what?????

Well sweet heart, self control means stopping doing what you like, controlling your own needs as every Muslim controls himself. Not eating or drinking is just a way to learn. It also means doing right and avoiding the bad. If you want to tell a lie, you refrain from telling it, if you want to argue with someone, you learn refraining from doing bad…it’s not easy but it’s necessary. And this is just to learn behaving better because Muslims should never do such things like lying or arguing, shouldn’t they? It’s a good lesson to learn, believe me.

And…well, there is a lot to tell about Fasting….for example, did you know that Fasting is a healthy practice?? Well it is! Because it gives the body the chance to rest as well. Our body gets rid of some unwanted weight or toxins in our body system machallah. Is that ok?

Page 16: +Ramadhan Calendar - Islamic · PDF fileAllah salla Allahu aleyhi wa sallem to fast the whole month of Ramadhan and that it’s written in the Qu’ran Ummi , but Why? Oh ... Allah

15

Having Abdullah spoken to his Mum for so long He gained a lot of information and He now knows how to answer back and not remaining short of words. He realized which one is the true meaning of Ramadhan. Al Hamdulillah!!!! May Allah SWT bless all the Muslimim ameen

Yes Ummi, so I will be fit Ummi, but what’s the reward for fasting Ummi??

Well habibi, fasting is only for people, Allah subbhanahu wa taala ordered it so the reward is his approval firstly and all the physical and emotional benefits I have already spoken about . Are you happy with that?

Yes Ummi and I love Allah subbhan wa taaala even more now!

Some reading

Qur’an and the Teachings of the Prophet

Islam teaches the Muslimin the best way of eating. A Muslim does not eat or drink too much.

There are many verses in the Noble Qur’ân which draw man's attention towards his self and which invite him to carefully study his body and soul. A believer should always have a sensibly diet with useful ingredients required for the growth and strengthening of the human body. These ingredients include animal protein, fat, calcium, iron, salts, etc. Do you know where to find them? Simply in the meat, fish, milk, cheese, fruit and veg that your Umm prepares everyday for you and your family.

So why not eat more fresh milk, veg and fruits like dates for example??? Forget chocolate and crisps for a while, and give it a try!! You will see you are getting stronger and stronger inshallah! The benefits of fruits are good nourishment, as from this verse of the Quran:

“And from the fruits of date palms and grapes, you desire strong drink and a goodly provision.” (16:67)

Page 27: +Ramadhan Calendar - Islamic · PDF fileAllah salla Allahu aleyhi wa sallem to fast the whole month of Ramadhan and that it’s written in the Qu’ran Ummi , but Why? Oh ... Allah

26

Similarly there are verses which cover the whole range of fruits, salads, and vegetables which also play an important role in a

nutritious, balanced diet

In short, believers are advised to always take care of their stomachs in order to avoid various diseases.

In order to do so the Prophet is reported to have advised believers to always stop eating before their stomachs are completely full.

Islam teaches us many other good manners when eating and drinking.

The Prophet taught clean and healthy eating habits among his followers asking his companions to wash their hands before and after, to start eating with the praise of Allah, to eat using the right hand, not to eat until they really felt hungry, and not to eat and drink excessively

You should always say

. Finally, by praising and thanking Allah for the food and drink, for making it easy to swallow and for producing an exit for it.

when you start eating and

when you finish!!

Allah knows best.

Summing up:

*always wash your hands before and after eating

*always start saying BISMILLAH

*always say HAMDULILLAH when finished

*always use your right hand to eat

*do not eat and drink too much

*praise Allah swt for giving you food and drink

Some reading

About Iftar and Suhoor

Eating healthy is a good way to preserve our own health. Suhoor is a meal to have before starting the fast and it is very recommended. The

Prophet Mohammad told us to get up and have Suhoor as late as

possible.

For the Iftar, the body has to get an easily available energy source in the form of glucose so let’s eat dates, juices and soups! They are rich

in water and minerals. Also, Prophet Mohammad advised Muslims to not delay when breaking their fasts and to break it immediately upon hearing the call of the maghrib (evening) prayer.

Prophet Mohammad used to break his fast with dates

and water and while this is recommended, it is not enforced. Each person can eat what he or she feels comfortable with.

It is related that the Messenger of Allah said "if one of you is fasting then let him break fast with dates, if he does not find any then with water for it is pure and purifying." [Abu Dawud with a sahih isnad]

Allah knows best

Soup game! Let’s have some fun with food!

Remember always eat healthy and soups are very rich in water and minerals. Please circle your healthy choices and ask Umm to prepare this soup for you as well.!

Choose some ingredients to make your own soup, colour them and match to them the pot.

Some reading about Al-Adab ( good manners).

It is NEVER advisable to get angry! A good Moo’imin (believer) should always be kind in all matters. Abu Huraira (radiallauh…) narrated Allah’s messenger said:” The strong is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger (The book of Al-Adab, in Sahih Al-Bukhari)”.

Anger can even break your fast.

Muslims are advised to do the Isti’adhah when feeling upset.

Once the Messenger of Allah saw two men arguing and he said they could have told a few words to calm down that is: ‘Authu billahi minash shaytanir rajim’

(Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

“I seek refuge with Allah from the cursed Shaytan”.

Because Shaytan is not happy when people follow their religion and he tries to stop them and tempts them into doing what they are not supposed to do.

It is again Al Hamdulillah . Farooq and Fatima, brother and sister, have been blessed by Allah subbhna wa taala belonging to a very honest Muslim family. Their Mum and Dad are used to spending a lot of time

teaching them Quran, Islamic manners and Sunnah. During Ramadhan this family dedicates just a little time for cooking. They know the real meaning of Ramadhan that it is not just fasting and eating as a routine! They are used to listening to Quran, taking part in Quran

competitions, teaching their children , helping the needy people and going to the Masjid and praying.

Farroq is a very good boy. He is learning to fast, and he is taking just two meals a day. The only problem is that his patience is weakened by his

continuous fighting his younger sister Fatima.

“It’s mineeeeee!” Fatima is shouting holding firmly his toy car. “Noooo, it’s not yours! Yours is green, this orange one is mine. Give it back to me!” Farooq answers back getting angry and upset. His Mum is busy at the moment and she cannot rush to calm them down….and then it is two late. Farooq pulls his

Page 33: +Ramadhan Calendar - Islamic · PDF fileAllah salla Allahu aleyhi wa sallem to fast the whole month of Ramadhan and that it’s written in the Qu’ran Ummi , but Why? Oh ... Allah

32

car toy away; Fatima cries and starts throwing all the toys in the room away! Allahakbar.

When Mum arrives she finds the room in a mess, Farooq is angry shouting to his sister Fatima and Fatima crying and breaking toys. She askes “What’s happening then?” Farooq says it was not his fault and so does Fatima, they just both want the same toy and they cannot share it. So Mum realizes they need some talking about Ramadhan and Islamic manners and says “Please come here, we need a little talk.”

Farooq is on his Mum’s knees and Fatima close to Mum’s side holding her neck. Mum with lots and lots of Sabr starts:” Are you Muslims or not?”. “Well we are” says Farooq”. Mum goes on:” What does it mean? And what do you think fasting means?” Fatima calms down Al Hamdulillah and listens very eager to know answers to these questions. Farooq says “Well Ummi Muslim means following the Quran and Sunnah and Fasting means not eating from fajr to maghreb and….being good and….. helping poor people…..and….”. Mum goes on:” Well, as you said fasting is being good. Have you both been good today?” Farroq and Fatima turn their eyes down and they feel ashamed for behaving such way.

Mum goes on telling them:” Once the Prophet Muhammed saw two men arguing near him and he said he knew some words that if they had told them they calmed down. These words are known as Isti’adhah: Authu billahi minash shaytanir rajim. You know that Shaytan is happy when Muslims get angry and upset, so with these words we seek refuge with Allah subbhan wa taala from Shaytan, and we calm down inshallah. If you stand you should sit down, if you sit down you should lie down and calm down. Your arguing could have broken your fast, do you know that? Fasting means being good, not telling lies, not arguing with anyone, not shouting, as good Muslims always do. So please next time think about it before fighting again”. The Brother and Sister feel closer to Allah subbhana wa taala now. They embrace each other and both apologie Al Hamdulillah and they start playing again machallah.

There are 5 fundamental duties in Islam, so important to be called “Pillars” of Islam.

1 Shahadah: ”la ilaha il Allah, Muhammad-ur-Rasool-Allah” means that Muslims testify there is only one God, Allah subbhana wataala, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah subbhan wataala and the last of the prophets.

2 Salah: praying 5 times a day. Fajr is the dawn time, Dhor is more or less lunch time, Asr occurs in the afternoon, Maghreb occurs at the sunset, Isha is the evening prayer.

3 Zakat means giving charity, it is a correct amount of money calculated by your parents every year.

4 Sawm means fasting, it is compulsory for the whole month of Ramadhan

5 Hajj, it is the pilgrimage to the sacred House of the Prophet Ibrahim (alehis salem)

5 pillars craft

create 5 pillars with toilet rolls, decorate with colored paper and write on each the name of one pillar. Play a game of choosing them in the correct order. Better if played in teams.

You can still do some practice matching them out or writing them down in the correct order.

35

“Assalamu alaikum. I see you are ready to start. Well this is your first question. Do you know how many surah there are in the whole Qu’ran?” “Wa alaikum assalam” Amina answered and after taking a deep breath she went on:” There are one hundred twenty four surah in the Qu’ran” Amina felt reassured once answered and very happy as well because the question was so easy Al hamdulillah. “Well done Amina. This is your second question. Do you know which surah is the last one in the Qu’ran? “Well it’s surat annas ” Amina could not believe the questions were so easy for her and furthermore surat annas was her favorite subbhana Allah. She felt so proud of having studied and practiced so hard. Her heart was full of love for Allah subbhan wa Taala. “Well done Amina indeed! Your third question is: which month is it now according to Islamic Calendar?”. Amina answered “It’s the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar, it’s Ramadhan, the month of fasting and charity.” “Well” Mr. abu Abdur Rahman said” Of course you have studied hard machallah. This one is your last question Amina: Which one is the first pillar of Islam and what is its meaning?”

“The first pillar of Islam is the Shahadah: La ilaha il Allah, Muhammad-ur-Rasool-Allah. Believing "La ilaha il Allah"Muslim say that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, the Creator of everything is Allah, subhana watala. And believing ‘Muhammad-ur-Rasool-Allah’ means testifying that ‘Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah’ subbhana wa taala." Allah said in the Qu’ran: "Muhammad is not the father of any

man among you but he is the Messenger of Allah and the las of the Prophets and Allah is Ever All-Aware of everything. (v.33:40)”. Amina you won! Machallah la quawata ila billa Well done you have studied seriously and your reward will be this prize a brand new Quran.

Yummy stuffed Date

Ok, let’s start washing your hands first and then preparing some yummy dates in a clean bowl. Ask Mum to show you how to unstone them gently.

Once unstoned, prepare your fillings according to your taste

Filling suggestion and coating:

you may fill each date with one white almond and serve.

You may fill it with chopped walnuts, pecan or peanuts, mashed banana and peanut butter, and then coat in gently warmed chocolate spread or very little warmed maple syrup.

Once chosen your favorite fillings, just fill in the dates and it’s done!!

You may even use cake decorations as shown in the picture.

They are best served with fresh cow or sweetened soy milk, apple juice or a tea

Muslims commemorate the Night of Power (one during the last 10 nights of Ramadhan) by spending the entire night inside the Masjid this is known as Itikaf. The Quran, was revealed over a period of twenty years, and the current book has remained unchanged since that first Night of Power over 1400 years ago. The Night of Power was a night during which the Prophet Muhammed was visited by the angel Jibreel, this was in the Cave of Hira and Jibreel commanded him to read. This was the start of the revelation of the Quran.

Holy Month of Ramadhan 1428

I am Muslim Al Hamdulillah I fast during Ramadhan. Fasting means not eating or drinking from Fajr to Maghreb and always being kind. Before Fajr I have my Suhoor and after the Adhan at Maghreb time I break my fast and I have my Iftar. This is a month good for charity and sharing. I listen to Quran and I learn more about Islam. I go to the Masjid and pray Taraweeh at night.

Allah says: 2:183 O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint,-“Ya’Ayyuha Al-Ladhina ‘Amanu kutiba ‘Alaykumu as-Siyamu kama kutiba ‘Ala Al-Ladhina Min Qablikum la ‘allakum Tattaquna”

I Ramadhan because it is a Month full of

Appendix

Children can be involved in many activities during Ramadhan. I really hope this book has been useful to spending time together and collect some ideas inshallah. Here there are other few activitiesu.

Masjid craft mobile to decorate the house. Just print some Masjid coloring pages from the Web, color them nicely, you could even write a poem on it or just Ramadhan Mubarek, then glue it on cardboard, and with some ribbon hang it up the wall or at the door, the chandelier and so on.

Tree of Ramadhan Goals. Easy version draw a tree, glue leaves on it at any time one goal that your child had, has been successfully reached .If you want to have more fun, do a big tree with foam or cardboard, prepare big leaves of foam or cardboard, each representing a goal ( write or draw the goal on it).

Print some Islamic Colouring pages from the Web. Let your child colour it, and decorate with ribbon, or glitter glue, stick it on the wall of his/her bedroom to decorate it.

Print Letters from the Web, make the word Ramadhan with letters of different colours, or the sentence Ramadhan Karim, Ramadhan Mubarek, stick on the door of his/her room to decorate

Moon lollypop. Cut out a circle or a segment ( if you want a full Moon or a New Moon) of a cardboard, stick with some glue or adhesive tape on a bamboo stick, cover the Moon with foil to make it shine.

A memory box or a note book where collect or glue memories of the present Ramadhan and keep it for next year.

A charity box. Give some money (no big value) to your child. Towards the end of Ramadhan he should be taught how to give sadaka in the Masjid and that the left hand cannot see the right hand giving charity.

Involving them in safe cooking always help (fruit salad, pizza dough).

A note for parents

This book can be used differently according to your child age. You can use the book without the Ramadhan Calendar and vice versa. You will find out by yourself inshallah which activities he/she can do by his/her own, which one is good to do just once, and which one is good to repeat. For example stories could be repeat at bed time. Reading about Ramadhan day should be done different times, they won’t be able to write all the words in one go, just let them choose, look at the pictures, read and explain them. Then they can come back to that page alone and they will be able to think again and colour new words. Obviously the majority of activities have been thought to allow the parents to take the occasion to stay more with his/her children and to explain them a bout Ramadhan inshallah. Good work.

All the Glory to Allah subbhana wa taala. I have a Mum and I have only the sincere intention to help parents having few new ideas, but in case any mistake occurs is only from my ignorance.
