the story! 3 one of last year’s most-discussed new series starts its second season on the strength of several awards including a Peabody, as “mr. robot” resumes wednesday on usa network. jay Bobbin learns what’s in store from stars rami malek and Christian slater, and creator and executive producer sam esmail.

12-13 A young New York Muslim stands accused of a woman’s murder and both the prosecutor and the public defender each have their ideas on how the case should play out, but little of it has anything to do with the truth. george Dickie speaks with john turturro and riz ahmed, who play attorney and client, and talk about the complex storyline.

14-15 The hot-button issue of race is at the center of the talk/comedy series “Black and white” starring sherrod small and Christian finnegan. Both men tell george Dickie where they will and won’t go on the subject.

17 How much help a self-help icon can give someone depends on how deep the person is willing to dig, and the documentary “tony robbins: i am not your guru” -- premiering friday on netflix — goes behind the scenes of robbins’ most intensive course. he talks with jay Bobbin about putting that process on public view for the first time.

Editor's choice

By jay Bobbinto risk understatement, no other television series – past or present – is like “mr. robot.”

the complexity and unpredictability of the usa network series’ first season earned it many fans, and a Peabody award plus two golden globes for best television drama and co-star Christian slater. it reboots both literally and figuratively as season 2 begins with two episodes and a live (in the east) after-show wednesday, july 13, with rami malek returning as technologically immersed loner elliot ... who has become the main nemesis of a “change the world”-bent hacker team and its figurehead, known as mr. robot and played by slater.

“i think the whole show has been about elliot’s emotional journey,” says creator and executive producer sam esmail, “and i really wanted to focus on that (in the first season) and make it less about the plot. and so for me, the headline for season 2 is, how do these two guys reconcile? how does elliot reconcile the fact that he’s just become aware that he’s seeing this fantasy (of slater’s character, who evidently exists only in his mind)? that’s the struggle that is going to kind of take over in season 2.”

as for other creative twists that frequently have stunned “mr. robot” followers, esmail maintains, “i’m not interested in ‘gotcha’ moments or trying to shock the audience – even though it happens. But i think it really happens because, first of all, rami brilliantly plays elliot in a way that draws you into his psyche, so you’re learning it with him. as long as that’s organic, as long as that feels real, then i think the twists will come from there.”

movie veteran slater made several earlier runs at television series (“my own worst enemy,” “mind games,” “Breaking in”), and he recalls his initial take on “mr. robot” vividly: “i read the pilot, and i had questions about it. i thought, ‘wow.

this is very interesting,’ and it certainly was subject matter that i hadn’t really seen tackled in this way before. and i thought the mr. robot character was very mysterious, and i remember, i said to my agent, ‘Do you think that guy is really there?’ and my agent was like, ‘oh, come on. they would never do that. the show is called ”mr. robot.” it would be crazy.’ ”

however, slater’s hunch was confirmed by his first meeting with esmail, who

laid out the entire premise at slater’s request. malek reports

he also knew from the start, adding that when production

on season 2 began, “enough was shared with me. i mean, with

this character, i have to prepare for anything at any given moment ...

so i go through kind of every direction as to what possibly happened to someone

like this because, in his head, you never know what has happened. and i think having to trace back

and discover the truth ultimately makes him more complex to play, just trying to decipher what he’s actually seen and where he’s actually been. that kind of haunts me as a human being, having to do that.”

grace gummer (“extant”) joins “mr. robot” as an fBi agent, with Carly Chaikin and Portia Doubleday among other returning cast members. even if a viewer feels certain about what’s up with any of them at any given moment in the show, that’s not a bet that should be placed easily per esmail, who’s also directing the entire second season.

“this series is filling in the blanks of the past and the present and even the future,” he explains, “and it’s almost like we keep stepping back. you know, you are this close to the painting. you take a step back, and then another, and you see more of it. i think that’s how i’m approaching every season.”

Were you surprised to get the offer to become the new host of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us”?it pretty much was just a little gift. it was a wonderful phone call to get, because it’s a completely new arena for me. it also came at a time where my oldest daughter has become very interested in magic, so it was great timing for me as a mom. it shoots in las vegas, and it was when my kids were in spring break.

Though your Willow on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” knew more than a bit about magic, do you?i really like that i don’t. i’m still sort of at the same level my seven-year-old is, where i’m like, “wow! that’s so cool!” now i have a little bit more of an understanding, but i also want to believe that it just is magic – and when you watch Penn & teller, you really do believe that. there’s no trickery involved.

To prepare for your new job, did you watch earlier “Fool Us” episodes?i did, yes. i’m a huge fan of jonathan ross (the show’s original host), so really, the most intimidating part of this was knowing how brilliant he is and that i’m going to be completely different than him. it’s definitely a shift, and i’m not trying to be jonathan ross; i would fail miserably at that.i was just looking at it as, “i’m going to bring my perspective,” and i’m like the majority of the audience. i’m sitting there doing, “what? how did they do that?” also, it’s a little bit of a boys’ club, even though there are some female magicians ... and i think it’s good to have my perspective of asking the “girly” questions.

Besides starring in “UnREAL,” you also directed Monday’s (July 11) episode. How did that go for you?on Day three, i had a moment where i saw the (production) slate and i thought, “wow. i’m already in Day three, and i’ve survived it.” it was really, really exciting. i obviously loved the challenge of seeing whether or not i could do it.i’ve been working in this business for so long that having the opportunity to be the person who’s running the ship and keeping things moving and calling the shots was just empowering and very liberating. i felt incredibly fulfilled, and i really hope it’s the beginning of an entire new chapter for me.

Was there a special benefit for you in directing a show you’re on as an actress?absolutely. i know the story in and out; we tell it all day every day, and its the same crew we had last season, so it’s definitely an environment where i have an incredible amount of support.

You also have a lot to do in the episode as your character, reality-dating-show producer Rachel. How was it to direct yourself?it was a little bit of a learning curve. i had to realize that it wasn’t conductive for me to yell, “action!” i communicated everything clearly to the camera crew beforehand, so they knew which shots i wanted.we have a wonderful executive producer and director, adam Kane ... and when i was doing emotional work, i had to let go of the controls as the director so i could focus on the acting, and i had him watch things for me. it was just like learning how to delegate and how to prioritize: “Does the director or the actress in me need the attention right now?”

george DiCKie’s Q&a

Has “Tyrant” proved to be a lesson in Middle Eastern politics for you?

yeah. i mean i’m definitely one of those people that watches the news every day and tries to stay as informed as i can. i think my (expertise) with it has definitely exponentially grown working on this show. one thing i’m proud of is that (executive producers) howard gordon and Chris Keyser in particular are always very aware of telling these stories in a fair manner, not strictly vilifying the middle eastern side. they’ve really worked with groups and organizations to tell the story fairly and i think they’ve done that. it’s a complicated show ... that could easily be negatively portraying the middle eastern side, and so i know that the showrunners put every effort into not doing that.

They’re taking the nonjudgmental approach?

i think so. i think they want to tell both sides of the story. i think we’ve always tried to do that and maybe not as successfully at the beginning. i think when the pilot came out, there were comments about perhaps portraying these characters in a sort of inflated, insulting way, and i think since the pilot the show has just morphed and grown and it’s intricately told the stories of every character from every perspective. and so even somebody like ihab rashid, who is a terrorist (played by alexander Karim), we get to see things from his perspective as well and this season in particular he has some really powerful speeches where you’re not just seeing this man as this faceless terrorist. we actually get to hear a little bit about history as well.

tasty george DiCKie’s what's for Dinner

when was the last vacation you took, where and why?

“the last vacation i took was Barcelona and that was in august last year. ... the food was spectacular, really, really good. me and my wife pick vacations based on where i know we can get good food and where we can roam around and just get lost. so that’s a good town to do that.”

what book are you currently reading?

“i’m not reading any books right now. i mean, i’ve got so much work to do i don’t have time to read books (laughs).”

what did you have for dinner last night?

“last night for dinner i had a gem lettuce salad and i had some chicken livers, like chicken nuggets with chicken livers. and i had some mussels.”

what is your next project?

“oh my gosh, i don’t even know where to start (laughs). i’ve got a lot of projects and i’m a bit of a busybody, so there’s so many projects on the go. and i don’t like to talk about projects until they’re released because ... i believe you have to build up pressure so i like to build up the pressure. and when you release it the pressure’s released. so there’s lots on the go, lots of stuff we’re working on.”

anyone who likes their grilling with a side dish of engineering would do well to check out “man fire food.”

in the half-hour series, now in its second season tuesdays on Cooking Channel, host roger mooking travels the country to check out some of the impressive, inventive and sometimes downright odd contraptions that people come up with in their efforts to put naked flame to meat.

“i’m always surprised every time i go to a new location,” mooking says, “how people find new ways of cooking over a fire. some people do these really makeshift rigs with really inexpensive tools and stuff that they can get a hardware store. other people are like engineers and they’re crafting these steel monoliths. it blows my mind and it’s hard to say what’s more ingenious, the monoliths or the makeshift stuff. they just all take so much ingenuity, man. they all amaze me.”

from outdoor rotisseries and ovens fashioned from steel troughs to brick-and-steel-grate barbecues and pots over wood fires, mooking has seen the inventions and tasted the meals they produced. as chef, restaurateur and lifelong barbecue enthusiast, mooking is clearly in his glory as he meets their inventors and swaps notes.

in tuesday’s episode, he heads to the florida Panhandle to meet a man and woman who create a pulled pork burger on texas toast with pork pulled by a power drill with an attachment.

“it’s very efficient,” he says. “the only thing is you’ve got to make sure you don’t overwork it. so it happens really quickly, you do it while it’s hot and the meat’s really hot. you don’t have to mix it too much because then it starts to get sticky. so just really quickly pull like four pork shoulders in about six seconds.”

like a lot of sportscasters, Kevin Burkhardt paid his dues doing things like freelancing and calling high-school sporting events.

But his road to fox and hosting its mlB pregame show took him to an unlikely stop: selling Chevrolets at a dealership in his native new jersey.

it was 2003 and Burkhardt was having trouble finding regular work as a broadcaster, so he opened the sunday paper’s jobs section and blindly put his finger on an ad, which turned out to be for auto sales. But what started out as a job selling new cars turned into an education in selling himself.

“i think the biggest lesson was you don’t get what you don’t ask for ...,” says the 42-year-old Bloomfield product, who on tuesday, july 12, will host the pregame show for fox’s coverage of the 2016 mlB all-star game from Petco Park in san Diego. “and i think sometimes you’re so worried, especially about hurting people’s feelings and stepping the wrong way or people thinking a certain image of you. and then it was basically ... what’s the worst that can happen if i call and say, ‘hey listen, i think you should hire me. you need to watch my stuff’? and so i did that.

“so it was a really good life lesson and i learned about myself. i learned about asking for things i wanted. i learned about negotiating and just dealing with people. i mean, you don’t deal with people any more than that job, i don’t think. so i wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

these days, Burkhardt looks at his duties at fox, which also include calling play-by-play on nfl games in the fall, as his dream job, his

reward for persistence, perseverance and a little selling of himself.

“to think that right now i get to sit at the world series and host shows and get to call these high-end nfl playoff games, it’s still a pinch-me thing,” he says. “... this is always what i’ve wanted to do.”

Past broadcasting experience: Covered high-school football for wght radio in new jersey; called new jersey jackals minor league baseball games on wjuX radio; reported on the new york jets for wfan radio in new york; did sports reports for wCBs radio in new york; from 2007-14, was field reporter for new york mets telecasts on sportsnet new york; did play-by-play on Dallas Cowboy games on america’s team radio network from 2011-13

By george DickieBy all appearances, nasir “naz” Khan is just a normal kid from a working-class Queens, n.y., background, taking engineering courses at the local community college and trying to make a better life for himself.

But when the young Pakistani american finds himself accused of brutally murdering and raping the uptown manhattan girl with whom he had a one-night stand, it sets off a series of events that puts him in with hardened criminals at rikers island prison as he awaits his fate, makes him a target of public vilification and has those closest to him doubting who they thought he was.

and that, in a nutshell, is the simplified version of the storyline of the new hBo eight-part miniseries “the night of,” premiering sunday, july 10. the total picture is a much more complex, nuanced package, encompassing anti-muslim sentiment in a post-9/11 new york, the slow, grinding wheels of the criminal justice system, the soul-searing existence that is being incarcerated, and the human cost of being accused of a crime, among other elements.

luckily for naz (played by riz ahmed, “the reluctant fundamentalist”), he has an ally in john stone (john turturro, “Quiz show”), the jaded, low-cost lawyer who jumps on the case without knowing the full circumstance. initially, stone wants to plead the charges and get a reduced sentence but naz insists he’s innocent.

HBO’s ‘The Night

Of’ weaves a complex tale of murder, justice and

human behavior

“you see a guy who’s really smart but he doesn’t have the stomach to go to trial,” turturro says of stone, “who can’t compartmentalize his feelings about it and the pressure of that. and after talking to a lot of different lawyers, i understood that. like some guys are able to do it, some guys burn out, some guys can’t do it. But he’s a very capable guy and very smart but it’s not in his constitution.”

“he just connects to the kid,” he continues. “he just connects to him and that’s why he puts himself in that situation and he doesn’t know what he did.”

as the story progresses, viewers come to learn more about this seemingly good kid and what he can be capable of in different circumstances.

“we’re all capable of things you might not imagine ...,” ahmed says. “so i think there may be more to naz than even he knows. so i guess the story is a journey of discovery for the audience in getting to know naz but i think it’s also a journey of discovery for naz himself.

“i think it was certainly that way for me as an actor as well as the story and the situations evolve. you know, you kind of strip away the different layers when you’re kind of put into a furnace, lots of your layers get burned off and what’s left is sometimes surprising.”

By george Dickieany discussion of race in this country seems to run the risk of striking nerves and offending sensibilities, something stand-up comics and longtime pals sherrod small and Christian finnegan hope to defuse with humor in their new series “Black and white.”

Premiering wednesday, july 13, on a&e network, the eight-episode, half-hour series endeavors to have an honest conversation about race in america, as led by small, a 42-year-old african american from the Bedford-stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, n.y., and finnegan, a white 43-year-old raised in suburban Boston. using sketches, parody and social experiments, the duo hope to provoke laughter, alleviate tensions, and as finnegan says, let “some air in the room.”

“generally when people ask me what the show is,” he says, “i say, ‘it’s a show about race.’ and then i wait about two seconds and then i say, ‘now, you feel that feeling in the air right now? that’s what the show’s about.’ ... and you want to kind of pick up where the conversations usually end and to not worry.”

“let’s take this thing that we all feel and just marinate in it for a bit and actually talk about the way we feel,” he continues. “Because a lot of people think that to even talk about these topics is racist. ... i think a lot of times what happens is a white person says something just slightly off or screws up – steps in it, so to speak – everyone comes down on him for it, and then a white person will just immediately retreat into silence and then quietly go vote for trump.”

such frustration is what small and finnegan hope to head off.

“there ain’t nothing more dangerous in america than a disenfranchised white dude,” small says. “a lot of people feel like their voices aren’t being heard and they feel like he’s the one speaking for them, so we’ll see where all this heads.”

Both men indicate that the subject of the presidential race will be front and center of the series, along with a range of other topics such as gentrification, the lack of blacks in the oscars this year and the dearth of roles for asian actors in hollywood. as for the Donald and his propensity for newsworthy sound bites, it’s safe to say that will provide a treasure trove of material.

“we’re really going to explore it,” small says. “we don’t want to just destroy somebody. we want to deconstruct it and see why it is, why are a lot of people in ... america getting behind him and a lot of people are getting infuriated with him.”

Both men say they’re not trying to offend in their discussions but if they happen to step on a land mine or two, so be it. they just want people to be able talk freely and honestly about a topic that’s divided the country for eons, and if they can shed a little light on how to do that, all the better.

“lBj said, ‘hang a lantern on your problem,’ ” finnegan says. “i think that ... showing that you can talk about this stuff and still be laughing and still be friends and that not everything has to be some self-righteous condemnation, i don’t think it’s anything but good.”

By george Dickie they were two of the brightest stars new york City had seen since mantle and mays.

one, a right-handed power pitcher with a 95 mph fastball and a curve that regularly flummoxed opposing batters. the other, a tall, angular left-handed slugger who drew comparisons to ted williams and willie mcCovey.

together, they were supposed to lead the new york mets to multiple playoff and world series appearances during the 1980s and then one day wind up in the hall of fame. But it was not to be for Dwight gooden and Darryl strawberry, the subjects of the “30 for 30” documentary “Doc & Darryl,” premiering thursday, july 14, on esPn.

the hourlong film from judd apatow and michael Bonfiglio tells the story of two young men whose stellar playing careers were derailed in their prime by substance abuse issues. it catches up with the now clean and sober 50-ish ex-athletes at a Queens diner, where they look back on their careers and their struggles with drink and drugs, and talk about what their lives have been like since.

“i think that they both are able to look back on their careers with a great deal of pride for what they did do,”

Bonfiglio says. “i think Darryl says in the film to Doc that everybody focuses on what we didn’t do but what about what we did accomplish? and i think that some of their downturns and darker times tended to overshadow what they did accomplish on the field.”

the two men recall the mets’ championship season of 1986 and the parade down the Canyon of heroes celebrating their come-from-behind world series victory over the Boston red sox. jon stewart, a lifelong mets fan, also shares his memory of that team and these two special players.

strawberry eventually would find his way out of addiction through religion, while gooden found his salvation in rehab. and even though they broke many a mets fan’s heart, they still loom as iconic figures in the big city.

“these guys are still beloved for what they meant to the city, to the franchise and they’re iconic players and people,” Bonflglio says. “and the sense that i’ve gotten is that there’s still a tremendous amount of love and support for these guys from the fans although it has been up and down over the years. But i think now since their playing days are long gone, i think people tend to remember the good times more so than the bad.”

By jay Bobbin if you submit to the tony robbins process of expanding your self-awareness, you’d better be ready to dig deep.

Digging even deeper is required by the most intensive course offered by the internationally popular life and business strategist and best-selling author. it gets a showcase in producer-director joe Berlinger’s (“Paradise lost”) documentary “tony robbins: i am not your guru,” making its netflix debut friday, july 15, following its screenings at festivals including south by southwest. the film presents robbins’ interactions with attendees at his six-day Date with Destiny event in Boca raton, fla., where he often takes them beyond their emotional limits in examining themselves to improve their lives.

admitting he initially wasn’t sure about the filming of Date with Destiny, staged with the grandeur and energy of a rock concert, robbins says Berlinger made the difference by going through one of his seminars. “in the first few hours, he wanted to run,” robbins recalls with a chuckle, “and his wife said, ‘well, why don’t you stay a day?’ then he had a transformation and we became friends, and he approached me about (doing the film), but i wondered how you’d capture six days in two hours and have it have any integrity.

“some of these conversations i have with people can go 90 minutes or two hours, but in a film, they have to be five or six minutes. (Berlinger) said, ‘trust me on this,’ and he’d come back every three or four months and hit me with another angle. what pushed me over the edge was when he said, ‘if we’re in there and it really is disrupting people, you say, “stop”–and my cameras go, and i lose my money.’ we agreed to that, and he and his team did

just a brilliant job. they didn’t break anybody’s state, and you still get the core moments in that compressed (film) form.”

robbins appreciates the platform netflix is giving “i am not your guru” since the streaming service’s global reach mirrors his own, and also because he’s curious about “what the average person will experience” from seeing it. “my fans are going to love it no matter what, and the people who are extremely skeptical are going to stay that way. most people have settled for being the manager of their circumstances instead of the creator of their lives, and (in the documentary,) i think you see the resilience in these people who think they’re not.”

though it’s sometimes controversial for such aspects as the “fire walk,” robbins reasons his work “reminds all of us of what’s possible. it’s the same reason people watch the olympics every four years ... because we see people do things that are just unbelievable. on a subconscious level, we know that we’re capable – maybe not of that jump or that run, but capable of more, something magnificent and beautiful. my hope is that for some people who watch, this will awaken that desire to create life on their terms, whatever that looks like to them.”

there’s little doubt that Chicago Cubs ace jake arrieta will be part of the national league squad when the 87th major league Baseball all-star game airs tuesday, july 12, on fox. in all likelihood, arrieta who was snubbed last season, will be the starting pitcher.

the 2015 Cy young award winner who won 22 games in 2015 picked right up this season where he left off. a one-run loss in early june ended a 20-game regular season winning streak for arrieta that dated back to last season. among those wins was his second career no-hitter; an april 21 blowout win over the Cincinnati reds. arrieta recorded his tenth win of the season in june and is on pace for back-to-back 20 win seasons. another Cy young award remains a strong possibility.

should arietta be named the starter in san Diego’s Petco Park, which will host the all-star game, his teammates could look very familiar. the Cubs are off to one of the best starts in baseball history and could trot out all-stars at several positions. this could quite possibly include their entire infield of anthony rizzo (1B), Ben Zobrist (2B), Kris Bryant (3B), addison russell (ss) along with outfielder Dexter fowler. not to be overlooked is fellow Cubs pitcher jon lester.

the Cubs should continue to be a team to watch during the second half of the season. for now, fans will likely get a good look at why they’re one of baseball’s best. and it starts with their pitching ace.

a few years ago, one of the summer’s more pleasant movie surprises was “now you see me,“ an adventure about a group of illusionists who used their magic – while doing their act on stage – to commit robberies and share the wealth with their audiences.

it did well enough to merit a sequel, and though the valid fear is that the second round might go overboard, “now you see me 2” actually is a nice follow-up that retains the original spirit ... even with a different director (jon m. Chu, succeeding the original’s louis leterrier).

the sequel also retains much of the original cast, with woody harrelson, jesse eisenberg and Dave franco back as three of the four horsemen, the magicians in question. lizzy Caplan, of showtime’s “masters of sex,” replaces isla fisher (who admittedly is missed, though Caplan fares nicely) as the quartet is forced to steal a certain computer chip at the behest of a high-tech wizard: “harry Potter” himself, Daniel radcliffe.

there’s fun to be had in watching radcliffe play nasty, especially since it offsets the friendlier larceny of the central characters. they truly believe they do good by evening scores, especially for deserving people, though

they’re crooks if one looks at it literally. they’re also the good guys (and gal), the way this plot plays out.

one of the things to be appreciated the most about the “now you see me’s” is how such a diverse cast comes together to make them work. also returning are mark ruffalo as an fBi man on the magicians’ trail, morgan freeman as their would-be discreditor, and michael Caine as an insurance kingpin.

while it helps to have knowledge of the first “now you see me,” that’s by no means required. magicians-as-thieves is a concept that’s quite simple to pick up immediately, and as with the initial chapter, the actors’ good cheer in going about performing the tricks is a terrific bonus.

also worth noting is that veteran magic man David Copperfield has his hand in “now you see me 2,” as both a co-producer and a technical adviser – a guarantee that the illusions come from a credible source, which such a film definitely needs. thanks to him and others, the good news is that the franchise’s magic does work again.
