carving the Bihar divisions of Chota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas.

The name Ranchi comes from the original Oraon village Archi at the

site.[2] Archi derives from the Oraon word for bamboo grove or stave.

According to legend, after an altercation with a spirit, a farmer beat the

spirit with his bamboo stave or archi. The spirit shouted archi, archi,

archi and vanished; Archi became Rachi, and Rachi became Ranchi.[3]

Up to 1927, the place was known as Rachi[citation needed]. One

historically significant neighborhood is Doranda ('duran' ' ' means

song and 'daah' ' ' means water in the Mundari language), between

the Hinoo (Bhusur) & Harmoo Rivers, where the civil station, treasury

and church established by the British Raj were destroyed by rebel

forces during the Sepoy Mutiny.[4] The present Purani (old) Ranchi

marks the site of the old village of Archi.

Geography

Ranchi is located at 23.35°N 85.33°E.[5] The total area covered by the

Ranchi municipal area is 175.12 square kilometres and the average

elevation of the city is 629 m above sea level.

Ranchi is located on the southern part of the Chota Nagpur plateau

which forms the eastern edge of the Deccan plateau. Ranchi is referred

to as the "City of Waterfalls", due to the presence of numerous large

and small falls of around the close vicinity of the city. The most popular

ones are Dasham, Hundru, Jonha Falls, Hirni and Panchghat.

The Subarnarekha river and its tributaries constitute the local river

system. Dams in Kanke, Rukka and Hatia have been built over these

channels to cater to the water requirements of majority the population.

Ranchi has a hilly topography and its combination with dense tropical

forests ensures that it enjoys a comparatively moderate climate

compared to the rest of the state. Previously, it was accorded a 'hill

station' status during the British rule. Rapid population growth and

industrialization have caused considerable change in the weather

pattern and rise in average temperatures. This has resulted in gradual

loss of this "Hill Station" like status.

Climate

Ranchi has a humid subtropical climate. However, due to its position

and the forests around the city, it is known for its pleasant climate. Its

climate is the primary reason why Ranchi was once the summer capital

of the undivided State of Bihar. Temperature ranges from maximum 42

to 20 °C during summer, and from 25 to 0 °C during winter.December

and January are the coolest months with temperature getting to

freezing point in some places of the city. The annual rainfall is about

1430 mm (56.34 inches). From June to September the rainfall is about

1,100 mm.

Industry

The term industry refers to a field or an organization involved in the

production of goods or extraction of natural resources. The economy of

Page 5: Ranchi is the Capital of the Indian State of Jharkhand

a country depends on the industries it has. The more industries a

country has the more economically rich and stable it is.

The type of an industry a country mostly depends on relies on the

presence of the available resources in the country. However only the

presence of resources is not enough for the industry to work, it is

important that the amount used for the production of good is exceeded

by the amount taken for its consumption. Hard work and labor are

another factor for the industry to work.

The presence of many and successful industries in a country make it

economically stable not only because it increases the chance of trade

but it also enhances the employment structure of the country. The

more industries in a country the more scope and chances for the

people to earn. One of the many reasons why some countries have left

behind others and are successful and rich is the presence of many

industries.

Types of industry

Extractive industries are concerned with supplying commodities, which

are extracted from earth. The products of these industries are generally

used by manufacturing and constructive industries for making finished

goods.

Genetic industries refer to industries under which plants and animals

are grown for the purpose of sale to the consumers.

Manufacturing industries are those, which convert the raw materials or

semi-finished goods into finished products.

Construction industries are concerned with the construction of

building, dams, road and etc. the raw materials that are used by these

industries are the products of manufacturing industries.

Services industries

Business provides not only goods but also services. Services industries

do not produce any tangible goods. These are engaged in providing

services to the public.

There are three types of Industries by Size in India. They are:

1) Large Scale Industries

2) Medium Scale Indusrties

3) Small Scale Industries

Large Scale Industries

Large scale industries refers to those industries which require huge

infrastructure, man power and a have influx of capital assets. The

term ‘large scale industries’ is a generic one including various types

Page 8: Ranchi is the Capital of the Indian State of Jharkhand

of industries in its purview. All the heavy industries of India like the

Iron and steel industry, textile industry, automobile manufacturing

industry fall under the large scale industrial arena. However in recent

years due to the IT boom and the huge amount of revenue generated

by it the IT industry can also be included within the jurisdiction of

the large scale industrial sector. Last but not the least the telecoms

industry also forms and indispensable component of the large scale

industrial sector of India. Indian economy is heavily dependent on

these large industries for its economic growth, generation of foreign

currency and for providing job opportunities to millions of Indians.

Medium Scale Industry

A medium enterprise is an enterprise where the investment in plant and

machinery (original cost excluding land and building and the items

specified by the Ministry of Small Scale Industries vide its notification

No. S.O. 1722(E) dated October 5, 2006) is more than Rs.5 crore but

does not exceed Rs.10 crore.

The definition of MSMEs under the services sector is as follows:

Page 9: Ranchi is the Capital of the Indian State of Jharkhand

i. A micro enterprise is an enterprise where the investment in equipment

does not exceed Rs.10 lakh;

ii. A small enterprise is an enterprise where the investment in equipment

is more than Rs.10 lakh but does not exceed Rs.2 crore; and

iii. A medium enterprise is an enterprise where the investment in

equipment is more than Rs.2 crore but does not exceed Rs.5 crore.

The Indian Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) sector plays a pivotal

role in the overall industrial economy of the country. It is estimated that

in terms of value, the sector accounts for about 39% of the

manufacturing output and around 33% of the total export of the country.

Further, in recent years the MSE sector has consistently registered

higher growth rate compared to the overall industrial sector. The major

advantage of the sector is its employment potential at low capital cost.

As per available statistics, this sector employs an estimated 31 million

persons spread over 12.8 million enterprises and the labour intensity in

Page 10: Ranchi is the Capital of the Indian State of Jharkhand

the MSE sector is estimated to be almost 4 times higher than the large

enterprises

Small scale industry

Industry is the segment of economy concerned with production of

goods. Small scale industry is a term which applies to the small

entrepreneurs who are engaged in manufacture and production on a

micro scale. It mainly refers to agro- based rural industry which doesn't

require huge capital influx and large infrastructure. These small scale

industries also include the indigenous cottage industry and the

handicrafts industry. The development of small scale industries is very

important for a country like India which has mainly rural economy.

These small scale industries which are mainly agro- based in nature

would provide job for millions of Indians and would contribute largely

to the overall growth of the Indian economy .The small scale industrial

sector continues to remain an integral part of Indian economy with

Page 11: Ranchi is the Capital of the Indian State of Jharkhand

significant contribution to GDP, industrial production and employment

generation in India.

Cottage Industry

Cottage Industry is a concentrated form of small scale industry where

the productivity of the goods takes place in the houses of the laborers

and the workforce include the members of the family. The equipments

used to generate products are not the hi-tech ones but generally those

which are used at homes.

Cottage industry is generally unorganized in character and falls under

the category of small scale industry. They produce consumable

products through the use of conventional methods. These types of

industries originate in the country sides where unemployment and

under-employment are widespread. In this way, cottage industries help

the economy by engrossing a massive amount of remaining workforce

of the rural areas. But on the flip side Cottage Industry cannot be

Page 12: Ranchi is the Capital of the Indian State of Jharkhand

considered as the mass producer of products. It faces major risks from

medium or large industries which demand huge amount of capital

investment for all types of hi-end technologies.

Cottage industries in India face dearth of capital and large quantity of

labor, which force them to buy capital-saving techniques. Hence, there

is an urgent need for implementation of techniques which not only

enhances productivity but develops skills of the laborers and meets the

requirements of the local market. Endeavors should be directed

towards the development of technology so that labors can enjoy a

decent lifestyle. Government should also provide subsidiaries for the

growth of cottage industries especially in the preliminary stages.

Ranchi industry is spread throughout the city of Ranchi and its nearby

area. A large number of mining and engineering industries at Ranchi

provide employment opportunities to a major portion of the population

of Ranchi. Since, there are good reserves of forest and mineral

resources in Ranchi, this place is considered to be an excellent place for

setting up medium and large scale industries.
