A select number of healthcare providers that have stood out as successors in health IT adoption were recognized by the White House and Health and Human Services Department.
Randy McClease, CHIME Board of Trustee and Chair of CHIME StateNet, was one of 82 healthcare providers from across the country whose progress in implementing health information technology granted an invitation to discuss the state of electronic health records with government officials. Designated as Meaningful Use Vanguards (MUVers), he was recognized for his leadership in local efforts that will eventually move the nation toward an electronically-enabled healthcare system.
The two-day event began Monday, June 18, with a Health IT Vanguard Conference, where providers met one-on-one with ONC representatives to converse on such topics as Meaningful Use, quality improvement, interoperability and exchange, and increasing health IT adoption in rural and underserved communities. The breakout sessions were very productive and allowed for “some lively discussion on health IT issues,” said McCleese.
In addition to discussing the barriers that rural providers face in electronic health records adoption, other panel discussions included solutions to privacy and security, and the challenges of building systems that can “talk to each other.”
McCleese also added that a significant amount of time was focused on health information exchange, standards, and the issues surrounding a standard of information exchange among vendors.

A population-based case-control study of lung cancer in Appalachian Kentucky:
The role of environmental carcinogens
This UK HealthCare research study will examine the relationship between lung cancer and environmental risk factors. The purpose of the study is to try to understand the effects of trace elements such as arsenic, chromium and radon on the development of lung cancer. By doing this study, we hope to learn why more people are afflicted with lung cancer in Kentucky’s 5th Congressional District than anywhere else in the nation.
Study Specifics:
• Participants must be older than 17 years of age, reside in the 5th Congressional District, have no prior history of any cancer (other than stage I and II nonmelanomatous skin cancer and lung cancer), have a working phone, be able to participate in an in-person interview and speak English.
• Your specimens will be stored for future research.• There will be no cost to you to participate, and you will
receive a $30 gift card and free radon testing of your home to compensate you for taking part in the study.
For more information, please call toll free 1-866-997-6372.
