• The Ol Chiki script, also known as Ol Cemet

("language of writing"), was created in 1925 by Raghunath Murmu for the Santali language. Previously, Santali had been written with the Bengali alphabet, Oriya alphabet, or Latin alphabet, on the rare occasions it was written at all. But because Santali is not an Indo-Aryan language, Indic scripts did not have letters for all of Santali's phonemes, especially its stop consonants and vowels, which made writing the language accurately in an unmodified Indic script difficult.

In the course of our interactions with the

local communities of our action areas and

during the execution of the various activities

planned by the National Service scheme unit

at IIT Kharagpur, we have had the privilege of

encountering a dormant and yet promising

creative potential. This magazine, a first of its

kind initiative, is an attempt to honour and

celebrate this dormant creativity of people

who are often denied the opportunity of its

expression. Special thanks to the people of

Ghagra and to the NSS coordinators and

volunteers for their involvement.
