President’s Message On behalf of the executive committee of Dharmasoka College Past Pupils Association UK (DCPPA UK), I would like to welcome all of you to Ranil Mallawarachchi Live in Concert & Dinner Dance 2014. Tonight you will be able to enjoy the unforgettable songs of the late Sri Lankan music legend Milton Mallawarachchi, performed by his son Ranil. Since Milton’s untimely death 16 years ago, Ranil has been continuing his father’s legacy entertaining the Sri Lankan music lovers worldwide. In addition we would like to introduce another talented Sri Lankan singer and an old Sokian, Iman Perera. Tonight’s music is provided by the renowned Sri Lankan band Skyhigh lead by Manjula Munasinghe. The DCPPA UK ex-co decided to hold this event in Stoke on Trent to give an opportunity for all the Sri Lankan music lovers in the Midlands to enjoy a great night of entertainment.
Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda is one of the most outstanding schools in Sri Lanka which celebrated its centenary last year. DCPPA UK was commenced in 2010 with a small group of enthusiastic past pupils and now has over hundred members. Through various charity events DCPPA UK has been able to raise funds to renovate the schools’ junior science laboratory and donate towards Galle Teaching Hospital, Emergency Treatment Unit Development Fund. We are planning to commence a scholarship scheme for underprivileged students at Dharmasoka College in the near future.
On behalf of the DCPPA UK, I would like to thank Ranil Mallawarachchi, Iman Perera and SkyHigh for accepting our invitation to perform tonight. I would also like to thank Dr Daya Perera who co-ordinated Ranil’s tour in the UK, all the sponsors for their generous sponsorship, all the organisations for their advertisements, Stoke on Trent City council for providing this stunning venue and the Sri Lankan community in Stoke on Trent who helped us in organising this event.
Enjoy a memorable evening of Sri Lankan entertainment.
Sudath Patabendi President, DCPPA UK

94% OF BRITAIN WON’T HELP AN ASIAN PERSONWITH CANCERIt’s not because they don’t want to – they simply can’t. And so blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan has launched a campaign to reach the small number who can.

For an Asian person with blood cancer, a bone marrow transplant from a matching donor is often their only chance of survival.
But right now, Asians have just a 40% chance of finding a match, compared to 90% for white northern Europeans.
That’s why Anthony Nolan created The Six Percent, a campaign to reach the small group who can change that statistic: 16–30-year-old Asians.
Anthony Nolan runs the UK’s bone marrow register, matching volunteer donors with people in need of lifesaving transplants. People like 18-year-old Aneesa, from Birmingham.
In September 2012, doctors told Aneesa she had aplastic anaemia and urgently needed a bone marrow transplant. Despite a worldwide search, she’s still waiting for that special someone who could save her life – a wait which has taken its toll on the whole family.
‘Being the father of a bright, outgoing 18-year-old girl has its stresses, but it’s great,’ says Aneesa’s father, Manzoor. ‘To then suddenly find that she needs a transplant, and that there aren’t enough Asian donors, is devastating.’
Over the last six months, Anthony Nolan has worked closely with organisations such as the Jaskomal Foundation and the Rik Basra Leukaemia Campaign to find more Asian donors – and give hope to more people like Aneesa.
Together they’ve held events at universities, colleges, gurdwaras, mandirs and mosques across the UK, recruiting more than 1,800 ‘six percenters’ in just five months.
Yet, despite these eorts, Asian people still have less than a 50% chance of finding that precious match. Which is why they’re counting on you.
‘Things don’t get more di¡cult than this,’ Manzoor continues. ‘Please help to get as many people on the register as you can, so other Asian parents don’t go through the same di¡culties as us.’
If you’re Asian and aged between 16 and 30, you’re one of the six percent. So stand up and be counted. Join the register at www.anthonynolan.org.
