Rank is top of the class when it comes to providing schools in Zimbabwe with stationery, but now the

company is seeking to expand by offering customers a wider range of products.

Rank Zimbabwe, which operates its own warehousing, wholesaling and manufacturing business, has recently celebrated its 30th anniversary.

The company offers a wide range of stationery, paper products, office furniture and domestic plasticware to the commercial and education sector in Zimbabwe.

Select Supplier Quality is vital for Rank Zimbabwe. Having gained a reputation for delivering excellence throughout the Southern African Region, Rank is keen to ensure that policy remains. Keeping a small group of select, exceptional suppliers is one way of achieving this.

“We have a carefully considered group of suppliers with whom we have a very good relationship,” said Ketan Naik, the company’s Finance Director. “For example we work closely with SAPPI limited, the largest paper manufacturer in the world, because they are the best and biggest in their industry.

the pens, exercise books and other stationery to help Zimbabwe’s youth succeed in education, Rank Zimbabwe is a company committed to giving young people a chance in both industry and business.

“Zimbabwe has a lot of skills and expertise in all sectors,” said Naik. “We are trying to promote that to come through. Unfortunately, a lot of people come out of school without any opportunities. That’s why we recruit people at the lower level who have potential, and they know there is nothing to stop them becoming management or even

General Manager.”Rank Zimbabwe recruits all

senior management internally – it all starts on the shop floor. The current General Manager of the warehouse started there. This philosophy shows how much trust and confidence Rank Zimbabwe holds in its entire staff, at all levels.

“It works well for us,” said Naik. “It ensures that the culture is the same throughout the business – everyone throughout the company understand the culture and ethos.”

The company has seen a huge rise in employee numbers over

We are the sole distributor of their TYPEK brand in Zimbabwe.”

Rank is also able to produce much of its own extensive product range through the use of its manufacturing arm (which includes 22 plastic injection moulding machines, two fully-automated book making machines and an envelope manufacturing plant), meaning that reliance on suppliers is only limited.

Rank Zimbabwe’s customers vary from large retailers to individual offices, including some of Southern Africa’s best known companies. However, one of the contracts that stands

is the stationery deal with many of Zimbabwe’s schools. Rank Zimbabwe is incredibly proud to be the stationery supplier to between 75 and 80 percent of schools in the country.

“What happens in Zimbabwe is that Ministry of Education disperses funds to schools based on the number of children,” said Naik.“Schools are allowed to purchase for themselves – and we are delighted that most of them choose Rank Zimbabwe.”

Trust is all-important when it comes to Rank’s relationship with Zimbabwean education. After 30 years of consistent quality provision, schools across the country know and respect the name of Rank Zimbabwe.

Rank Zimbabwe is committed to serving the youth of tomorrow with more than just stationery. “We give back to the community, said Naik. “We do a lot of community projects with the schools, for example we have just donated a fully equipped computer centre to a local primary school.”

Creating opportunities Rank Zimbabwe recognises the potential in Zimbabwe’s next generation. While also being exceptionally proud of supplying

the past three years. Currently, it employs 120 people; a 50 percent increase from 2008. Part of the reason for this impressive growth is the rejuvenation of the Zimbabwean economy under the US dollar. However, Rank Zimbabwe’s dedication to the growth of its staff, as well as the consistent deliverance of quality through its extensive portfolio of varied products has had a large role to play in its current success.
