LOCATION AND ACCESS
The property is located in the Larder Lake Mining District, District of Timiskaming, encompassed by UTM 1:20,000 sheets 20 17 5000 52900 and 20 17 5100 52900. The N.T.S. sheet is 41P15SW. Location of the claim group relative to Matachewan and Gowganda is shown on Fig. 1.
Access to the property is good, and is gained along an all-weather paved road which extends westwards from Hwy 11 towards Elk Lake and Gowganda (Hwy 560) or Matachewan (Hwy 566). The easiest access to the property is via logging roads, extending southward from secondary gravel roads southwest of Matachewan through Doon Twp. Rankin Lake is on the Montreal River drainage system and is also accessible from the Wapus Creek landing on the Gowganda-Shiningtree road, via a 35 km trip on the Montreal River.
LAND STATUS and LIST OF CLAIMS
The property consists of 4 claims, staked in April 1995. Specifically, the claims are described as follows:
Claim No. Registered Owner Prospector's Licence No. Recording Date
1076578 Ulrich Kretschmar A46647 13 April 19951076695 Ulrich Kretschmar A46647 13 April 19951076686 James McMahon A51877 13 April 19951076569 Ulrich Kretschmar A46647 13 April 1995
The claim location is shown map (Fig. 2). The claims were staked when the township was opened for staking in April 1995. Rankin Township is unsurveyed.
PROSPECTING TARGET, DEPOSIT TYPE AND GEOLOGY AND PREVIOUS WORK
The main target appears to be gold-bearing quartz veins in Archean volcanics. The only report on the property or on the township is by A.F. Reeve, Assessment File 41P15SW003 63A, 429 RANKIN and all the following information is taken from this report. The ground was covered in snow when the property was first staked and the geological relations could not be confirmed. Reconnaissance traverses in 1996 by the author established the existence of a volcanic tuff sequence and local caps of Huronian conglomerate. No mineralization was encountered.

Previous Work on the Property (from A. F. Reeve report)
1921: discovery of spectacular gold showing in conglomerate schist.1922: staking of claims, 2000 ft of trenching, wildcat pitting, sinking of 8X12 ft vertical
shaft to 55 ft depth with vertical workings; mining, hand cobbing and sorting ofhigh grade ore.
1963: staking of claims, mapping, trenching, sampling by A.F. Reeve
GEOLOGY OF THE PROPERTY
According to A.F. Reeves, the property is underlain by Archean volcanics, exposed in a window in Huronian conglomerates. Pillowed lavas interbedded with tuffaceous units appear to strike northeasterly and dip steeply. Quartz veins are enclosed in pyritic chloritic schists up to 20 ft wide within the volcanics. The NE strike extension of the mineralization found in the discovery shaft is covered by Huronian conglomerate.
WORK CARRIED OUT
Geological Reconnaissance
Three days were spent prospecting and traversing the claims, locating showings and trenches and examining the general geology. A sketch geological map was made of part of the shoreline and two whole rock analyses are presented. (Fig 3.)
Line Cutting
6.53 km of line were cut and chained by Marc Robert, as shown on Fig 4. Line spacing was 100 metres and pickets were located at 25 m intervals.
Lines were cut by Marc Robert, Elliot Lake, with the assistance of Dennis George, Matachewan in the period April 1 to April 8, 1997.
Proton Precession Magnetometer Survey
A magnetometer survey was carried out on the grid on April 9 and April, 10, 1997. The instrument used was a geoMetrics Model G-826 Portable Proton Magnetometer, Serial No. 6010 loaned to the author by the MNR, Tweed Resident Geologists office. Lines were traversed on two separate days, April 9 between 10 am and 2 pm and April 11, 10: 22 and 15:45. The survey was carried out by Marc Robert, by traversing the previously established grid of lines and taking readings at every station. The total distance travelled on the claim group is 3.53 line km.

RESULTS
Geological Reconnaissance
Reconnaissance traverses on Sept 26, 27, 28, 1996 established the location of the shaft and tailings pile, as well as several quartz veins and overgrown trenches. A preliminary stratigraphic sections was established by traversing and measuring the thickness of geological units, along a short section of the shore of Rankin Lake, shown as Fig. 3. The following lithology was established and will be modified as needed for mapping the entire property.
Lithology:
Unit 1: Andesitic tuff. The tuff is hard, indurated and has a slaty appearance. Locally there are hematitic veins 1-2 mm in thickness. The unit ressembles a greywacke in places. Unit 1 is rusty brown to buff weathering.
Unit 2: Andesitic feldspar crystal tuff. Thin units 5-10 cm thick, interbedded with Unit 1.
Unit 3: Massive andesite flows. Dark green, dense, fine grained, locally with epidote knots. Pillow or flow margins poorly defined by increase in chlorite and slightly darker colour.
Unit 4: Felsic tuff: Strongly foliated, lighter coloured
Unit 5: H uronian? conglomerate: Heterolithic conglomerate with angular to rounded boulders in a medium to fine-grained greywacke-like matrix.

Whole Rock Analyses
Two samples of volcanic rock were taken for whole rock analysis. Locations are shown on Fig 3. The analyses were carried out by KRAL Laboratories, Toronto. Results are shown below and the originals of the assay certificates are shown as Appendix A;

Geological Structure
Bedding is moderately well defined and trends 060, with beds dipping steeply 80-85 degrees to SE. Contacts with Unit 5 are poorly defined and locally indistinguishable from Unitl. Unit 5 shows no bedding and moderate to no foliation. Degree of induration is the same as for Units 1-4. Foliation and bedding are parallel.
Magnetometer Survey
Preliminary interpretation of the data suggests that there are several areas that show magnetic susceptibility higher that the surroundings. One area of magnetically highly susceptible rocks appears to be centered on the NWC of claim 1076569. The orientation of this anomalous zone is NE to SW, which is parallel to the regional strike direction. The anomaly is shown on Fig. 4. Correlations with geological units cannot be made at this time.

RECOMMENDATIONS
There is no comprehensive recent report of work on the propery and the last evaluation appears to have been in 1963. The property should be re-evalued, using modern methods and geological concepts. Specifically, the following is recommended:
1) Re-establish the NE-SW base line and perpendicular lines with spacings of 100m in the Spring or summer, when the snow is gone. Rechain and set up pickets.
2) Carry out a VLF surveys to locate overburden covered contacts and aid in interpretation of the geology. The geophysical survey will be done most effectively when there is ice on Rankin Lake.
3) Geologically map and continue to prospect the property at a scale of 1: 2,500. Locate potential drill sites along strike from the shaft, as recommended by A.F. Reeve in 1964. Continue with rock geochemical and whole rock sampling. Carry out detailed mapping at a larger scale in areas that appear to have greater potential especially in the vicinity of the shaft and along strike. Locate all previously described showings, quartz veins, trenches and stripped areas.
4) Assay and/or geochemically analyze veins, sulfide showings and host volcanics. Channel sample and freshen up old trenches.
5) Compile all current and previous information on a single map at the same scale.
