CUSTOMER SATISFACTION THE PRIORITY AT RPD

The highest standards of workmanship, speed of operation and a complete turnkey service from initial design to completion, has made Rothienorman-based Rapid Project Development Ltd (RPD) the first choice when it comes to farm buildings in the North-east of Scotland.

RPD has been providing a fast and efficient building service to farmers for more than 35 years and has never been busier as the improved profitability of farming in recent years has seen significant investment in farm buildings on North-east farms.

Last winter’s prolonged snowstorms, which saw buildings on many farms collapse under the weight of snow, has also brought its own pressures as farmers seek to have new buildings in place in time for this year’s harvest and the housing of stock in the autumn.

The fact that all their recently-erected buildings – as far as RPD is aware - came through the winter unscathed speaks for itself and is testimony to the high standards which the company sets for itself.

RPD’s standard roof purlins have always been 1.6mm, as typically specified by structural engineers but, for buildings in areas where there is a risk of heavy snowfall, RPD have increased them to 1.8mm or 2.0mm.

This is just one example of the attention to detail which the company insists on to ensure buildings are fit for purpose and will stand the test of time. Another is the application of two coats of paint to enhance the appearance of buildings which contrasts sharply with the single coat of primer which some other companies deem to be adequate.

Every building is bespoke and designed and built to the farmer’s own specification although building kits are also supplied to the likes of the Western Isles for local erection.

All building developments are personally supervised by owner Paul Duxbury and his three sons, John-Paul (design and planning/building warrant applications), Daniel (steel fabrication), and James (ground preparation and concrete work), daughter, Michelle (currently on maternity leave) and her partner Kevin (transport). Paul’s brother, Alan, looks after accounts and administration.

Providing farmers with a “one stop shop” for their building requirements means there are no surprises when plans are finally approved and building work commences, as there often is when outside designers or architects are employed.

The other key member of the team, well-known from his previous management roles with Grampian Country Food Group and

Financial Control Services (FCS), is David Smith, who joined RPD two years ago as accountant to measure and improve the physical and financial performance of both RPD's building and farm businesses. Given David's broad agricultural background he now also has a wider role in developing new business with farmers.

The structure leaves Paul free to concentrate on management and spending time on site managing the team of skilled staff dedicated to each job. RPD will have three or four jobs ongoing at any one time each with its own dedicated team taking the job through from start to finish. The company prides itself in not making promises which it is unable to keep.

Careful pre-planning ensures buildings are completed quickly and efficiently, with minimum disruption to the customer’s farming business, and farmers are often pleasantly surprised by the speed of operation and how quickly jobs are completed.

Having the right equipment is vital and considerable investment has been made to improve efficiency and meet health and safety standards. No short-cuts are taken to safeguard staff and also the interests of farmers, many of whom are not aware that they may be liable if they employ “cowboy” builders who fail to comply with health and safety regulations.

Building on success . . .

Recent investment has included eight cherry pickers, to supplement the two Merlo Roto 40.25 telescopic handlers purchased two years ago, and a larger concrete polisher which itself represents a substantial investment. A full time mechanic is now employed to service all machinery.

Grain and potato stores, cattle courts, Dutch barns and pig and poultry units may account for most of the company’s work but industrial development work is also undertaken, recent projects including two workshops for an offshore service company, and Norvite’s new country store at St Katherines.

Customer satisfaction is the number one objective and is the reason customers return to RPD every time building work is required on the farm. Hundreds of satisfied farming customers will happily testify to the company’s unrivalled reputation for timeous delivery, speedy erection and quality finish.
