The ceramic and ceramic clay samples collected and processed within the project cover all
major prehistoric and historic epochs in Romania. The Neolithic, Chalcolitic (Copper Age), Bronze
Age, Iron Age (from Celts to Dacians), the Roman and Bizantine times contain enough data (sites) to
allow basic conclusions regarding the ceramics technology and chaȋne opératoire”, from
enhancement of raw materials to modelling, pottery surface finishing and firing. The investigation
focussed for samples related to the following sites: Cucuteni-Ruginoasa, Limba, Poieneşti-
Măgura/Dealul Teilor, Munteni-Broscărie-Tecuci, Ilişua, Derşida, Siliştea, Palatca, Săveşti,
Copăceni, Lăpuş, Fântânele, Vlaha, Piatra Tomii, valea Teleormanului, Sarmizegetusa Regia,
Şimleu-Silvaniei, Porolissum, Napoca, Histria, Micăsasa, Suceag, Ibida, and Novodinum. The project
focused on the basuc activities as follows:
Filed mapping and sampling of clayey raw materials and ceramic sherds

Lab work: Thin sections for optical microscopy and polished thin sections for electron
microprobe
Mineralogical and petrographic investigation in polarized light (optical microscopy)
X-ray diffraction analyses
Grinding samples for geoichemical analyses

Geochemistry by ICP-ES and ICP-MS
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and semiquantitative microchemistry (EDS)
Firing/heating experiments on cersamic clays in order to establish geological thermometers for
ancient ceramics
Investigations by EPR (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) for thermal calibration of
archaeoceramics
FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) investigation of ceramics and fired clays
Introduction of new analythical methods for archaeoceramics, such as VSI (Vertical Scanning
Interferometry (for the surface study and identification of modeling techniques),
EMPA-Field Emission (for high resolution BSE images)
Participation at international and national conferences on archaeometry (oral, poster)
Organization of specific scinetific sessions (archaeoceramics, archaeometry) at international
conferences
Publication fo the results.
Selected representative samples were measured by electron microprobe and SEM. The large
sampkes were grinded and geochemically analysed for 60 major, minor, trace and RE elements.
Some specific raw materials (ceramic clays) were lab tested by gfiring up to 1200C and
subsequently analysed by optical microscopy, XRD, EPR and FTIR. The EPR and FTIR obviously
can be used as „thermometers” in inferring the firing temperature for ancient ceramic sherds. It
became also clear that any scientific investigation of ancient ceramics should include basic methods
used in geosciences: polarized light optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron microrpobe.
In the project, 8 ISI (peer reviewed) papers, 4 BDI (International DataBases) papers, 6 book
chapters (among which one at the prestigious Oxford university Press) have been published.
Additionally, 5 volmes were edited (among which one at Elsevier). There are still 2 papers in
evaluation (second review) and 9 papers are in prep.
There were 44 prezentations (23 oral, 21 poster) at 17 international conferences and 2
prezentations at national conferences. Members of the project team were organizers (scientific
committee, convener, chair) at international conferences.
