Le Lycée Français de San Francisco est tout entier engagé dans l’accomplissement de sa mission d’excellence éducative française au service de sa communauté. Nul mieux que moi ne sait combien les énergies positives et les efforts répétés sont indispensables à sa réussite ! Pourtant, je sais aussi que nous pouvons faire encore mieux et avec mes collaborateurs, nous finalisons désormais un plan stratégique clair et ambitieux qui indiquera les grandes directions que prendra le LFSF à moyen et long termes. Grâce à lui, la visibilité de ses dirigeants (conseil de gestion et administration) sera accrue et permettra une anticipation dans toutes les grandes décisions stratégiques qui peuvent l’être (immobilier, taille, structure, recrutement, organisation pédagogique, ressources humaines, services aux familles, communication).

Je n’ai pas l’intention de détailler ici la multitude d’implications “positives” d’une telle posture dynamique mais je ne peux l’imaginer sans le soutien fort de la communauté au sens large. Votre soutien financier a été, est et sera toujours fondamental et je veux ici remercier ceux d’entre vous qui ont permis l’amélioration de notre cadre de vie et des conditions d’enseignements dans tous nos campus. De généreux donateurs qui investissent sur l’avenir, sur la jeunesse et sur l’éducation sont des personnalités de premier choix qui méritent notre reconnaissance dans une communauté comme la nôtre.

Dans la totalité de ce rapport 2012-2013, vous pourrez constater combien nous avons raison de fonder de grands espoirs dans nos levées annuelles de fonds. Les exemples fourmillent de réalisations qui n’auraient pu exister sans cela.

The Lycée Français de San Francisco is totally committed to fulfilling its mission of excellence in French education to best serve our community. No one knows better than I how much positive energy and unceasing effort are essential for our success! I also know, however, that we can do even better and, together with my team, we are now finalizing a clear and ambitious strategic plan that will explain LFSF’s direction, both short and long term. This will result in greater visibility of our directors (managing board and administration) and director involvement in all major strategic decisions (real estate, size, structure, recruitment, educational organization, human resources, family services, communications and more).

Our ambitious strategic plan cannot succeed without the strong support of our community. Your financial support has been, is now and always will be fundamental—and I want to sincerely thank those of you who have helped improve the environment and learning conditions on all three campuses. Generous donors who invest in the future, in youth and in education are persons of the highest order who deserve community recognition.

Throughout the 2012–2013 report, you’ll see why we place great hope in our annual fundraising. Examples abound of achievements that could not have existed without it.

One of the most impressive qualities of the Lycée Français de San Francisco community is its willingness to embrace a bold vision for its students. Maintaining that vision and tradition of course comes at a price. To cover full operational expenses and afford innovative programs we ask for contributions to the Annual Fund. Because contributions to it are voluntary and above what is required to enroll a student, the government considers them tax-deductible (Tuition and fees are not tax deductible). The Annual Fund is also a way members of the LFSF community affirm to one another that the education their children are receiving is worth the cost.

How much should one give to the Annual Fund? Give at a level with which you are comfortable, a level which makes you feel good, that you won’t regret, of which you can be proud. If everyone would embrace that simple principle, we would be amazed at the collective power of our resources to prepare our students to thrive and succeed on that multicultural, multilingual world stage that awaits them. Many thanks to our donors for their commitment and generosity toward the students of the LFSF during the 2012-13 school year.

L’une des qualités les plus marquantes de la communauté du Lycée Français de San Francisco réside dans sa volonté d’adopter une vision audacieuse pour ses élèves. Le maintien de cette vision et de ces traditions a un prix. Afin de couvrir l’ensemble des dépenses opérationnelles et de permettre la mise en place de programmes innovants, nous sollicitons des contributions au Fonds annuel. Parce que les contributions à ce fonds sont volontaires et ne font pas partie des frais d’inscriptions d’un élève, le gouvernement les considère comme des donations déductibles d’impôts (les frais de scolarité et autres frais associés ne le sont pas). Le fonds annuel est aussi une façon pour les membres de la communauté du LFSF d’affirmer que l’éducation reçue par nos enfants en vaut la peine (et le coût).

Combien donner au Fonds annuel ? Donnez à un niveau auquel vous êtes à l’aise, un niveau qui vous semble satisfaisant, que vous ne regretterez pas et dont vous pouvez être fier. Si tout le monde suivait ce principe simple, imaginez l’impact qu’auraient nos ressources collectives pour la préparation de nos élèves à leur réussite sur la scène multiculturelle et multilingue globale qui les attend. Un grand merci à nos donateurs pour leur engagement et leur générosité envers les élèves du LFSF au cours de l’année scolaire 2012-13.

Traditionnellement, le Gala de vente aux enchères est le plus grand évènement de collecte de fonds de l’année pour le Lycée Français de San Francisco. Le gala « Totalement années 80 » qui s’est tenu le 10 Novembre 2012 a confirmé cette règle avec une collecte d’un montant record de 169,000 $ au profit des élèves du LFSF. Ce montant comprend entre autre 73,000 $ dédié au Fonds pour l’avenir, une initiative visant à amener les nouvelles technologies émergentes dans les salles de classe. Les enseignants ont ainsi pu assister à des ateliers dédiés à l’utilisation des nouvelles technologies en matière d’éducation. Avec les équipements achetés grâce aux fonds recueillis, et par le biais de la formation continue, les enseignants des trois campus ont participé à l’enrichissement des expériences d’apprentissage de leurs élèves. Les nombreux soutiens mentionnés dans ces pages ont contribué à l’extraordinaire succès de notre gala de vente aux enchères.

Historically the Auction Gala is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Lycée Français de San Francisco. The “Totally 80’s” Gala held on November 10, 2012 was no exception with a record-breaking $169,000 raised for the students. Included in that number was $73,000 for “Fund for the Future”, an initiative designed to bring new and emerging technologies into the classrooms. Teachers were able to attend workshops dedicated to the use of new technology in education. With equipment purchased through the funds raised, and utilizing the specialized training, teachers on all three campuses were able to expand the learning experience of their students. The many supporters listed in these pages contributed to the extraordinary great success of the Auction Gala event.

Deux des événements durant l’année 2012-2013 ont fédéré notre communauté de deux manières très différentes. Tout d’abord, la dégustation de vins du Lycée Français de San Francisco, Soirée Millesimes – Une affaire de cru. Le 7 mars 2013, le Consul General de France a gracieusement ouvert sa maison a plus de 60 personnes pour des hors d’oeuvres et la dégustation de plus de 30 vins.

La kermesse annuelle du LFSF est toujours un grand succès et les élèves planifient les festivités des le début de l’année scolaire. Le 9 juin 2013, la communauté s’est réunie autour d’une cuisine gastronomique, de jeux gonflables etc …

Merci pour la générosité et la participation des sponsors, ces deux événements sont sources de plaisir et d’excitation au sein de la communauté du LFSF, et un soutient financier à nos programmes étudiants.

Two of our events during 2012-2013 brought our community together in two very different ways. First, the Lycée Francais de San Francisco wine tasting event, Soirée Millésime – A Vintage Affair. On March 7, 2013 the Consul General of France graciously opened his home to more than 60 guests for hors d’oeuvres and the tasting of over 30 wines.

The annual LFSF country fair Kermesse is always a big hit as students start planning for the festivities at the beginning of the school year. On June 9, 2013 the community gathered to enjoy gourmet food, games, bounce houses and more.

Thanks to the generosity and participation of sponsors and in-kind donors, these two events brought a lot of fun and excitement to the LFSF community, and financial support for our student programs.

Collecter des fonds institutionnels est une question d’opportunités. L’un des éléments fondamentaux en matière de philanthropie de l’éducation est la joie de donner. Les collecteurs de fonds savent qu’ils ont fait leur travail correctement quand ils entendent un donateur dire : «J’ai donné pour soutenir mon école et je suis heureux de l’avoir fait». Si vous vous êtes déjà demandé pourquoi tant de gens donnent de l’argent à l’école privée de leurs enfants, cela est l’un des éléments de réponse. Un bureau du développement efficace sait que les donateurs sont plus importants que leurs dons. Chaque donateur pose en effet deux questions : « Qu’allez-vous faire de ma donation » et « Quel est l’impact de ma donation pour l’école et les élèves ? ». Il est donc primordial de répondre à ces questions.

L’année 2012-13 a été une année passionnante pour le LFSF. Impact Report

Institutional fundraising is about opportunity. A fundamental component of educational philanthropy is the joy of giving. Fundraisers know they’ve done their job right when a donor can say, “I gave to support my school, and I’m glad I did.” If you’ve ever wondered why so many people don’t object to giving to their children’s private school, that is part of the answer. Effective Advancement departments know that donors are more important than their gifts. Every donor asks two questions: “Where will my gifts go?” and “What was the impact of my gifts upon the school and its students?” Answering those questions is very important!

Fonds de dotation à long terme & Dons SpécifiquesLe Fonds Pierre Antoine Fontaine ( PAF )Depuis le printemps 1992, à plusieurs reprises, le LFSF a reçu des fonds et des titres de la propriété de Barbara Marie Fontaine pour créer et alimenter un fonds de dotation à la mémoire de Pierre Antoine Fontaine. L’utilisation de ce fonds est définie précisément: « A la fin de la session du printemps de chaque année, le revenu doit être versé à un ou plusieurs élèves dans le besoin, méritant(s), de nationalité française ou d’ascendance française. A l’issue de leur Terminale au LFSF, cet (ces) élève(s) doit (doivent) avoir été accepté(s) dans une filière d’études supérieures en France ou dans une formation culturelle d’une durée minimale d’un été.

Le Fonds Seona HerailCe fonds a été créé au cours de l’année fiscale 1995-1996 à la mémoire de Seona Herail, élève du lycée. Il s’agit d’un fonds permanent dont les distributions sont limitées à un maximum de 6% de sa valeur de marché à la fin de l’année précédente.

Le Fonds pour la Préparation à l’entrée aux Universités AméricainesCe fonds a été créé par un petit groupe de parents du Lycée en Février 2000 avec un montant originel de $130,000. Ce fonds est uniquement destiné au financement du programme de préparation des élèves pour l’entrée dans les universités américaines. Seul le revenu peut être distribué. Si le revenu généré par le fonds ne couvre pas toutes les dépenses liées au programme, le Lycée s’est engagé à financer la différence avec son propre budget opérationnel.

La Dotation du Dr. Jean Deléage pour la Langue française, les Arts et la CultureCe fonds a été créé au cours de l’année fiscale 2011 – 2012 par la famille Deléage « afin d’honorer la mémoire de leur père qui fut membre du conseil d’administration et grand soutien du Lycée Français de San Francisco ». Le but de ce fonds, géré par le conseil d’administration, est de financer des projets, ressources et des programmes permettant la mise en valeur de la langue française, des Arts et de la Culture au Lycée Français de San Francisco.”

Le Fonds d’Urgence Créé par le Conseil d’Administration pour tout type de situation d’urgence, ainsi jugée par le Conseil, qui pourrait avoir un impact défavorable sur la situation financière et/ou la viabilité du Lycée à un degré significatif. Le principal objectif des investissements est de générer à long terme, un taux de rendement total (revenu plus appréciation) qui permettra une croissance réelle, tout en préservant des liquidités pour les cas d’urgence notamment la nécessité d’une utilisation partielle ou totale du Fonds. Un montant minimum de $25.000, soit 0,33 % du budget annuel de fonctionnement devrait être ajouté à ce fonds.

Le Fonds Construction et capitalCréé par le Conseil d’Administration en 1992 pour répondre à des besoins spéciaux et/ou pour des projets approuvés par le Conseil d’Administration, bénéfiques à la communauté du Lycée dans le court, moyen et/ou long terme, y compris, mais sans s’y limiter, à l’entretien/l’amélioration des bâtiments, l’achat de

biens immobiliers et/ou de matériel, des frais de consultation, ou pour la création de nouveaux postes. Il n’y a pas encore eu d’attribution de sommes provenant de ce fonds.

The Pierre Antoine Fontaine Memorial (PAF) Fund The Lycée received cash and securities in stages starting in the spring of 1992 from the estate of Barbara Marie Fontaine to create this fund. This Fund’s use is restricted: “The income shall be paid, at the end of the Spring term of each year, to a worthy, needy student or students of either French citizenship or French ancestry who have completed the terminal year and who have been selected by said governing body in order to further his or their education in France in an academic or cultural manner for a summer or longer period of time.”

The Seona Herail FundThis fund was established during the 1995-1996 fiscal year in memory of Lycée student Seona Herail. This is a permanent fund. Distributions are limited to a maximum of 6% of the fund’s prior year-end market value.

The Preparation for American Universities FundThis fund was established by a small group of Lycée parents in February 2000 and funded with a $130,000 contribution.

This fund is restricted to finance a program specifically designed to prepare students for American Universities. Only the income may be distributed. If the income earned by the fund does not cover all expenses related to the program, the Lycée has committed to fund the deficit from its operating budget

The Dr. Jean Deléage Endowment for French Language, Arts and CultureThis fund was established during the ’11-’12 fiscal year by the Deléage family “In honor of their father’s legacy of board service, support and belief in the Lycée Français de San Francisco. This board designated fund will be used to fund projects, resources and programs that enhance French Language, Arts and Culture at the Lycée Français de San Francisco.”

The Emergency FundA fund established by the Board for all types of emergencies deemed by the Board to adversely impact the financial situation and/or the viability of the Lycée to a significant degree. The primary investment objective is to generate a long-term, total rate of return (income

plus appreciation) that will permit real growth while preserving relative liquidity in case of an emergency and the need for a partial or full payout of the Fund. An additional minimum $25,000 or 0.33% of each year’s operating budget should be added to the fund.

The Capital/Building Fund A fund established by the Board in 1992 for special needs and/or projects as approved by the Board in order to benefit the Lycée community in the short, medium and/or long-term, including, but not limited to, building maintenance/improvement, purchase of real-estate property and/or equipment, consulting fees, or the creation of new positions.

They help in the classroom, on the playground, before school, after school; they lend help to administrative departments, accompany students on trips, do fundraising, problem solve, lend expertise, recruit, encourage, investigate and take leadership. What an inspiration! To all who have volunteered, please allow me to express the sincere appreciation of the entire LFSF community for your service. The school could not function without you. We owe you a tremendous debt of gratitude for the partnership, support and encouragement you offer our students, faculty, staff and other parents.

Volunteer Spotlight

Il y a plusieurs raisons pour lesquelles j’ai choisi de faire du bénévolat au LFSF, mais la plus importante, je crois, c’est que cela m’aide à enseigner à mes enfants quelques leçons de vie importantes et valeurs fondamentales que nous partageons au sein de notre famille.- l’action : C’est ce que vous faites qui vous définit et non pas ce que vous possédez- l’honneur : quand on s’engage à aider les autres, il vous aller jusqu’au bout parce que vous avez donné votre parole.- le réalisation : d’aider les autres sur une tâche donnée vous procure ainsi qu’aux autres un sentiment de réalisation et d’appartenance.

L’explication de ces notions n’aurait pas le même impact que le fait de les vivre tous les jours. De faire du bénévolat au LFSF m’a permis de “ vivre “ ces valeurs

aux yeux de mes enfants. A la fin de la journée quand l’un d’eux me demande : « Qu’as-tu fait maman? “ Je ne peux répondre (a) je suis allé travailler ou ( b ) J’ai aidé Nathalie , Jennifer et Ilsook à l’école sur un projet de collecte de fonds afin que toi et tes amis puissent jouer dans une cour d’école verte, ou bien que j’ai aidé à vos enseignants à trouver des accompagnateurs pour votre prochaine sortie scolaire. Ces actions parlent à mes enfants. Ils connaissent les gens que j’aide. Ils voient l’impact direct qu’ont mes actions sur notre communauté. Ils savent que cela m’apporte beaucoup de joie de le faire, que j’en suis fière et que j’y reviens toujours

There are many reasons for which I chose to volunteer at LFSF, but the most important is that I believe it is helping me teach my children by example a few important life lessons about our family’s core values. - Action: It is what you DO that makes you who you are, not what you HAVE. - Honor: when committing to help others you must follow through, because you have given your word. - Purpose: assisting others in a given task gives, both you and them, a greater sense of purpose and belonging.Merely explaining these notions would not have the same impact as does living them daily. Volunteering at the LFSF has allowed me to “live out” these values right before my children’s eyes. At the end of the day when one of them asks me: “What did you do Mom?” I can answer (a) I went to work or (b) I helped

Nathalie, Jennifer and Ilsook at school on a project to raise money so that you and your friends can play in a greener schoolyard, or I helped your teacher sign up volunteers to chaperone your next school outing. These actions speak to my children. They know the people I am helping. They see how my actions impact our community. They can tell I get great joy from doing so because I am proud of what I do and I keep going back to do more.

Lorsque je suis venue pour la première fois au Lycée Français de San Francisco je ne connaissais pas la communauté. J’ai pensé que la meilleure manière d’apprendre à connaitre d’autres parents, le personnel serait de faire du bénévolat et comme Hélène, notre avocate volontaire à Marin me l’a suggeré, que j’aide à la Boulange les vendredis. J’ai déja fais du bénévolat, pas seulement avec la Boulange, mais avec d’autres projets à l’école. Chaque semaine je rencontre de nouveuax parents, des élèves et du personnel (mais je communiqué aussi avec ceux que j’ai rencontré avant) ce qui me permet d’appartenir encore plus à la communauté. La bénévolat me donne l’occasion d’utiliser mes competences

dans lesquelles je suis bonne mais aussi l’opportunité d’en developper de nouvelles.

Je recommande fortement le bénévolat ou autres actions que vous pouvez fair au campus de Sausalito. C’est un groupe de gens incroyable et je trouve qu’il est très gratifiant de soutenir la communauté qui aide à éduquer nos enfants.

When I first came to the Lycée Français de San Francisco I didn’t know the community. I figured the best way to get to know other parents and staff would be to volunteer so Helen, our Marin Volunteer advocate, suggested I help out at the Boulange on Fridays. I have volunteered ever since, not only at the Boulange but with various other projects at the school. Each week I get to meet new parents, students and staff (as well as interact with those I’ve met before) which allows me to feel even more part of the community. Volunteering gives me a chance to use the skills that I’m good at and a chance to develop new ones.

I highly recommend volunteering in whatever capacity you can at the Lycée campus in Sausalito. It’s an amazing group of people and I find it is really rewarding to support the community that helps educate our children.

Je suis la mère de Stefan (classe de CP/1st ) et d’Elsa ( classe de MS/Prek-2 ). Mes deux enfants sont entrés aux Lycée en classe de PS/Prek-1 sur le campus d’Ashbury.

J’ai fait du bénévolat en tant que parent-guide lors des journées portes-ouvertes du campus d’Ashbury, en tant que parent-accompagnateur pour les sorties scolaires des classes de mes enfants et en tant que photographe. J’ai ainsi pu profiter de travailler avec les enseignants et les membres de l’administration de l’école, et d’apprendre à connaître les amis de mes enfants et leurs familles.

Cette année, j’ai décidé de faire du bénévolat principalement comme photographe, car cela me procure une grande joie de pouvoir ainsi combiner deux aspects essentiels de ma vie, à savoir : mon implication dans le développement académique et social de mes enfants et ma carrière en tant que rédacteur et photographe documentaire.

Ce qui me passionne au travers la photographie est de pouvoir capturer des moments significatifs, dévoiler la beauté d’un lieu et les interactions humaines en son sein. En tant que photographe pour le lycée, je peux me plonger dans la vie de l’école du point de vue des enfants. J’arrive à interagir avec les jeunes enfants et à observer leurs amitiés croissantes au sein d’un environnement intime. Je peux également discuter avec les élèves plus âgés alors qu’ils apprennent à programmer des robots et à mener des expériences en chimie. De voir l’enthousiasme des enseignants sur les trois campus - et de ressentir directement la vivacité et l’énergie des élèves - est source d’inspiration pour moi. Je me sens privilégiée de faire partie de cette communauté. Je suis heureuse de soutenir l’école, et j’ai hâte de voir mes enfants se construire en son sein.

I am the mother of Stefan (CP/1st grade) and Elsa (MS/Prek-2). Both children started in PS/Prek-1 at the Ashbury campus of the lycée.

I have volunteered as a parent-guide at the Ashbury campus open houses, as a room parent, as a parent-chaperone on school trips for my children’s classes, and as a photographer. As such I have enjoyed working with the teachers and members of the school’s administration, and getting to know my children’s friends and their families.

This year I decided to volunteer primarily as a photographer as it gives me great joy to combine two core aspects of my life: involvement in my children’s academic and social development, and my career as an editor and documentary photographer.

As a photographer it is my passion to capture meaningful moments, conveying the beauty of a place and the human interactions within it. As a photographer for the lycée I can immerse myself in school life as seen from the children’s perspective. I get to interact with the younger children and observe their growing friendships in an intimate environment. And I get to talk with the older students as they learn how to program robots and conduct chemistry experiments. Seeing the enthusiasm of the teachers on all three campuses – and feeling first hand the vivacity and energy of the students – is inspiring. I feel privileged to be a part of this community. I am happy to support the school, and look forward to seeing my children develop within it.
