Dick Scobee signed 1976 F-111 Super Critical Wing test cover, he was the commander of Space Shuttle Challenger whose crew of 7 died in 1986.

On January 28th 1986 the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, leading to the deaths of all seven crew members. The disaster was caused by an o-ring seal on one of its

rocket boosters failing at liftoff. This allowed burning gas to escape and reach an external fuel tank, causing the separation of the rocket booster and structural failure of the fuel tank. It was later discovered that the

o-ring was not designed to fly in the cold conditions which were present

on the launch day. The disaster resulted in a 32-month halt of the shuttle

program and the subsequent Rogers Commission found NASA managers

had known about the fatal flaw in the o-ring, and disregarded warnings

about the dangers of launching in such low temperatures.

On February 1st 2003 the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated as it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere, killing all seven crew members. During the missions launch a piece of foam insulation broke off an external

tank and impacted the left wing. When Columbia re-entered the atmosphere

the damage allowed atmospheric gases to breach wing structure, resulting in its destruction and that of the entire shuttle. The Shuttle program was suspended for over two years and construction of the International Space Station was frozen.

Insurance CoversAs you can imagine, trying to find a life insurance policy when your job title was an Apollo astronaut proved to be an impossible task. Out of this difficultly the idea of insurance covers first emerged during the Apollo lunar landing missions, starting with Apollo 11. The crew signed philatelic covers which they left with their family to sell in the event they didn’t return to Earth, thus ensuring their families financial future.

We have three fantastic examples of the signed insurance covers; there is no doubt these would be the crown jewel in any space collection.

John Young served a record 42 years with NASA and is the only astronaut to have commanded four different classes of spacecraft - Gemini, Apollo Command Module, Apollo Lunar Module, and the Space Shuttle. Young was the first person to orbit the Moon alone during the Apollo 10 mission and became the ninth person to walk on the Moon during Apollo 16; he also commanded the first Space Shuttle mission.

Alan Shepard was one of the original ‘Mercury Severn’ astronauts, and became the second man and first American to go into space. He was pilot of the MR-3 mission which lasted for 15 minutes and achieved an altitude of 187 km, the flight came three weeks after Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. Shepard later commanded the Apollo 14 mission and became the fifth man to walk on the Moon. He spent 33 hours exploring the Moon and famously smuggled a six iron club onto the lunar surface where he hit two golf balls, one of the iconic images of the Apollo Program.

SCOTT CARPENTERScott Carpenter (Mercury-Atlas 7) was one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, Carpenter was the second American to orbit the Earth and the fourth American in space. He piloted Mercury-Atlas 7, the fourth Project Mercury flight. After orbiting the Earth three times during a four hour and a half hour flight, the crew returned to Earth safely, although a targeting error meant they landed 250 miles off course.

SP(M07)02A £150 SPECIAL OFFER £125Scott Carpenter signed space cover, our choice.

GORDON COOPERGordon Cooper (Mercury-Atlas 9, Gemini 5) was one of the seven original Project Mercury astronauts, the first manned space program of the United States. Cooper piloted Mercury-Atlas 9 which was the final Mercury spaceflight and also the last mission where a solo astronaut was launched into space. He later served as Command Pilot of the Gemini 5 mission which spent nearly 8 days in space, and in doing so broke the Soviet record for the duration of a space flight.SP(M09)01A £125 SPECIAL OFFER £95Gordon Cooper signed space cover, our choice.

JOHN GLENNJohn Glenn (Mercury-Atlas 6, STS-95) was one of the original ‘Mercury Seven’ astronauts, Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth. During the Mercury-Atlas 6 mission he circled the globe three times during a flight lasting just under 5 hours, and upon his return became a national hero. Glenn is the oldest person to have flown in space, aged 77, when he served as a Payload Specialist on the Space Shuttle Discovery STS-95 mission. This also made him the only astronaut to have flown in both the Mercury and Space Shuttle programs. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.

SP(M06)01A £175 SPECIAL OFFER £125John Glenn signed space cover, our choice.

RON EVANS

EUGENE CERNAN

Ron Evans (Apollo 17) was the Command Module Pilot for the Apollo 17 mission, to date the last manned mission to the Moon. Evans stayed in orbit during the mission and recorded details of the lunar surface and later completed a one hour EVA. He logged over 300 hours in space and holds the record for most time spent in lunar orbit, at 148 hours. He was heavily involved in the Space Shuttle Program and was awarded the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 1973.

Eugene Cernan (Gemini 9A, Apollo 10, Apollo 17) was Pilot of Gemini 9A in 1966, Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 10 in 1969, and Commander of Apollo 17 in 1972. Gemini 9A encountered several technical problems but the crew did perform a space rendezvous which developed the process for the Apollo 10 mission. During Apollo 17 Cernan and his crew covered over 22 miles in the Lunar Rover, collecting samples which shed light on the Moon’s history. During these sorties Cernan broke the lunar land speed record when he reached 11.2 mph. He is one of only three astronauts to travel to the Moon on two separate occasions and is currently the last man to have walked on the lunar surface.

JIM IRWIN

AL WORDEN

CHARLIE DUKE

Irwin was the Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 15 and the eighth man to walk on the Moon. Apollo 15’s objectives were more geologically centered than previous missions. This led to the discovery of the Genesis Rock, one of the oldest samples ever recovered, and dated at over 4 billion years old. Irwin was involved in the ‘Sieger cover’ scandal after the crew carried 398 covers onto the lunar surface for the German dealer Hermann Sieger, without NASAs approval. It took a law suit to force the US Government to return the covers back to the crew.

Al Worden (Apollo 15) served as Command Module Pilot for Apollo 15, and during his time in solo orbit in the Command Module he was 2,235 miles away from the nearest human being; a record which is still in the Guinness World Record Book as the ‘most isolated human being’. Worden was caught up in the ‘Sieger cover’ scandal after the Apollo 15 crew carried 398 covers onto the lunar surface for the German dealer Hermann Sieger, without NASAs approval. It took a law suit to force the US Government to return the covers back to the crew.

Charlie Duke (Apollo 16) was the tenth, and to date the youngest man to walk on the Moon. He served as the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 16 and spent a total of 265 hours in space. Apollo 16 was the fifth manned lunar landing mission and the first to explore the Descartes Region, an area of lunar highlands and one of the most lunar terrains. Duke explored the surface in the Rover 2, logging over 20 hours of driving. The mission achieved its primary scientific goals which included the deployment of a cosmic ray detector and the establishment of a UV camera observatory.

JAMES MCDIVITT

EDGAR MITCHELL

McDivitt commanded Gemini 4, and in doing so became the first astronaut to be assigned as commander in his first mission. The mission witnessed the first spacewalk by an American which is cited as the turning point of the space race as NASA caught up with Russian capabilities. He later commanded Apollo 9 during which the crew performed the first manned flight of a Lunar Module, proving the LM capable of manned spaceflight. He was instrumental in redesigning the spacecraft to better suit the ultimate objective of a Lunar Landing, and served as Apollo Program Manager from 1969 to 1972.

Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14) piloted the lunar module during Apollo 14 and became the sixth man to walk on the moon. He spent 9 hours on the lunar surface and in that time covered the longest distance on foot compared to the previous Apollo missions. Mitchell collected 100 pounds of lunar samples and oversaw the use of the first Mobile Equipment Transporter. During his NASA career he logged over 216 hours in space and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1970.

CosmonautsViktor Gorbatko’s first flight was the Soyuz 7 mission in 1969 which witnessed them meet Soyuz 6 and 8 in orbit at the same time. Soyuz 24 in 1977 was the final mission to the Salyut 5 space station and Gorbatko had to vent the stations air after toxic fumes had caused the evacuation of the prior Soyuz 21 mission. His final flight in 1980 was with Soyuz 37 as part of a long duration mission which lasted 79 days.

SP(R)038 £40 Yuri Romanenko signed Russian space cover.

GHERMAN TITOV

YURI GAGARIN

Gherman Titov became the second human to orbit the Earth and the fourth man in space when he piloted Vostok 2 in 1961. The mission lasted over a day and orbited the Earth 17 times, during which Titov took the first manual photographs from orbit and captured Earth on film. At just 25 years of age, Titov remains the youngest man to travel into space.

Yuri Gagarin was the first human to venture into space, when in April 1961 he piloted the Vostok 1. The flight made one orbit around Earth and lasted for 108 minutes. Rather than splashdown into the ocean like the American space program would later do, Gagarin actually ejected out of the spacecraft at 23,000 feet and parachuted to safety. The successful mission was a major propaganda coup for the USSR during the Cold War and Space Race and resulted in a renewed effort by the USA to surpass the Soviets achievements. Tragically Gagarin was killed in 1968 during a training exercise in a MiG-15 jet.
