How to deal with tricky questions A NYONE can become a competent interview robot. All you need do is hop online and revise dozens of classic
questions and model answers.Armed with knowledge, you
learn to say that you left your last job because you wanted more challenges. You know that, if asked to reveal your biggest fl aw, the safe answer is that you overwork – the cost of total commitment.Suppose, though, that the
interviewer has more guile than average or is just plain devious, cruel – even strange. How do you handle a question that comes from left
fi eld, never occurred to you and is absent from the cheat sheets? Try these tips.1. What key performance
indicators are you account-able for?
This brutally factual question stems from the hirer’s desire to know that you understand measurement and can achieve targets, says the general manager at Frontline Recruitment Group’s Doug Downer. Write them down before attending the interview
so you can easily pinpoint and talk about the KPIs for each role you’ve held.2. Why are you worth the
salary?You must substantiate the
value you will bring to the role and the company, Downer says. If you have boosted
profi tability or sales, that proves your value. Likewise, if you have slashed costs or achieved notable outcomes in projects or roles, that demonstrates worth. Play up your successes – be bold in response to this question.3. Aren’t you overqualifi ed?Concerned about commitment, here the interviewer wants to know whether you will keep scouring the job market and
quit when the right role or salary materialises. So, talk about long-term aspirations, express a desire to be with the business well into the future. Also, if applicable, point out that the business is
growing and so needs able, well-qualifi ed candidates like you. State that your experience and skills will yield an instant return.
4. Tell me about someone you worked for and didn’t respect. When addressing this loaded
question, beware of falling into the trap of passing personal judgement, says recruitment
analyst Ross Clennett. “The interviewer is trying to see whether you complain about others or dump on them,” Clennett adds. Focus on how
you delivered the outcomes for which you were responsible. Keep the answer about you – not a rival. mycareer.com.au

REDS ARE INBALLARAT SECURES SPOT IN STATE’S TOP SOCCER LEAGUE
BALLARAT will be part of a
new era in Victorian soccer
after confi rmation of its place
in the new National Premier
Leagues competition.
Football Federation Victoria
yesterday announced the Red
Devils as one of 30 clubs to be
offered a licence in the state’s
top league, which will begin
this season.
Ballarat’s place in the NPL
follows the key appoint-
ments of former Australian
goalkeeper Danny Milosevic
as football director, A-League
c h a m p i o n s h i p w i n n e r
James Robinson as playing
manager and Darrin Carroll
as business manager.
Yesterday’s news was
music to the ears of Reds
chairman Duncan Smith,
who has worked hard to
bring the club’s vision to
fruition.
“We were always confi dent
– confi dent we had met the
criteria and in fact exceeded
the criteria.
“We very confident we
would get a place in the
NPL but we couldn’t count
our chickens until they had
hatched and now they have,”
Smith told The Courier.
“We took a punt and got
the people we wanted to be
involved and we are confi dent
we are going to put a competi-
tive unit out on the pitch and
be very well supported off the
pitch.”Smith said the new Ballarat
Regional Soccer Facility
had been a linchpin in the
successful application.
“I’m pretty confi dent that
without the stadium we
wouldn’t be in this position.
“It’s got to be hats off to the
city council for having the
foresight to build the stadium
in the fi rst place,” he said.
To complete formalities,
Ballarat will be required to
confi rm its participation in
the league by returning a
signed licence agreement to
FFV by 5pm on Wednesday,
February 19.

“The course here is

“I had my best ever

“I also had a good race

rare 1585 Breeches Bible found

A RARE 1585 ‘Breeches Bible’ has
been literally stumbled upon at the
Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute (BMI).
The book was found by excited
volunteer Marion Blythman during
a tidy-up at the historic Sturt Street
building a few weeks ago.
“We were unpacking some boxes
with bits and pieces in it and I saw this
bible from 1585,” Ms Blythman said.
BMI volunteer Roger Burrows, who
has a special interest in antiquarian
books, said it was the fi rst mechani-
cally printed and mass-produced
bible written in English.
“It’s relatively rare on antiquarian
book sites,” Mr Burrows said, adding
