graduation of the class of 2016 On Saturday, 9 July the Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2016 was held. e 16th batch of Rato Bangala graduates had 135 students. On Saturday, 9 July the Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2016 was held. The 16th batch of Rato Bangala graduates had 135 students. We wish the Graduates all the very best as they continue their journey forward to attend their respective colleges.

The Class of 2018 began their classes from 20 June after a weeklong orientation. Reflections on Core Values, Growth Mindset, Climate Change and Geo Politics, Facing Dilemmas were some of the issues that were focused on.

An Orientation program was held for the parents of Grade I on 8 May. Parents were briefed about Rato Bangala School; they were also informed about how the school and home operate hand in hand for the development of children.

beginning of the term to understand the curriculum for the whole year. Curriculum Meeting for A1 was also held on 27 July, 2016. The parents were briefed about the expectations of A Level and the School.

assembly

Grade III had their Ramailo Assembly on 25 June. We would like to congratulate the students and teachers for their effort. Grade VII students also had their Annual Assembly on 1 July, 2016. They put up plays, songs, dances and poems. Thank you Grade VII for a truly entertaining evening.

trips

Students of Grade IV went to see the Machindranath Chariot being pulled on 4 May as it is related to the study of Newars that the students were engaged in, this term. Students also made a miniature of the Chariot in school and pulled it around the school premises with great enthusiasm.

Grade V went on a number of trips this term. On 9 May they made a trip to the Botanical Garden at Godawari, where they got firsthand knowledge on the diversity of plants. They also went on a trip to Taudaha on 20 May to enhance their knowledge about their Science topic, Ecosystem. To further support their study of the

People of Nepal, Grade V visited Nepal Tourism Board on 12 July. The trip proved to be very informative for them as it helped them understand more about the various ethnic groups in Nepal, which is their current topic of study in Social Studies.

To understand better, how a community functions and how the people in a community are interdependent on each other, Grade III made a trip to the Patan Dhoka Community on 23 May. The post trip discussions truly reflected the knowledge they gained from the trip.

On 26 May, the students of Grade IV visited Swayambhunath and got insights on the formation of Kathmandu Valley. This helped them to create their own myths about the same topic.

Students of Grade I had a fabulous time doing Scavenger Hunt in the Garden of Dreams on 22 July. Children learnt more about plants in a fun way.

The students of Grade VI visited Patan Museum as part of their culminating activity of the study of archaeology.

Grade VIII students visited the Church at Dhobighat to know more about Christianity, one of the topics in their study of Comparative Religion.

guest speakers

We would like to thank the Traffic Policemen for visiting us and having an interactive session with the students of Grade II on 17 May.

On 23 June, Ms. Lajja Dixit had a session with the students of grade VI where different issues on growing up were discussed. The talk was very productive and something the students look forward to. We would like to extend our thanks to Ms Dixit for spending time with our children.

activities

Grade II students planted rice seedlings on 3 June and enjoyed having Dahi Chiwra in school to celebrate rice plantation on Asar 15. This term the students of Grade VI worked like archaeologists and took part in a simulated dig, to make their study of the Indus Valley Civilization more meaningful. They took on different roles as excavators, recorders, and draftsmen as they excavated and interpreted the site. Grade VIII set up the process of vermin culture in the school.

Some students from grades VI to X performed at Hotel Yak & Yeti during the celebration program of the Independence Day of Israel. The musical ensemble was greatly appreciated.

Grade VI Archaeological Dig Grade I trip to Garden of Dreams

Unit II and the A Level students practiced yoga under the guidance of the volunteers from the Isha Foundation for a week prior to World Yoga Day.

Students from Grades IX to A Level participated in Indian Model United Nations 2016 held at St Xavier’s School Jawlakhel and came back with awards in all the committees they participated in. Congratulations to all the winners.

Unit II held their Annual Short Story Competition on 22 July this term. They also held their Annual Elocution Contest on 5 July, 2016. The students of grades VI-VIII recited beautiful poems written by well known poets. The students of grade IX filled our hearts with slam poetry pertaining to real life situations and issues. Grade X students came to the podium with speeches by famous personalities ranging from Steve Jobs to Winston Churchill. Well done students!

environment week celebration

Environment week was celebrated with great enthusiasm. Each class had their unique way of marking the week.

The students of Grade I made Paper baskets tags (Bio-degradable and Non- biodegradable) for home and their classroom. They sang songs,

watched Environment related videos and did a collage on the Theme: Animals.

Grade II made paper bags out of old newspapers and distributed them to the shops in the neighbourhood in order to raise awareness on No Use of Plastic Bags. They read The Giving Tree and did a long term investigation on garbage.

Grade III made Cloth Bags and sang the song Kapadako Jhola. They read the book Lorax and watched the video. They made posters related to environment.

Grade IV made posters based on the theme of Environment Day and did research on ‘Illegal Trade in Wildlife’. Their skits Jewan ko Lagi Rukh and Stop Poaching were very inspiring.

Grade V did presentations on Environment Issues of Nepal. They made labels, posters on issues of Environment.

Grade VI focused on writing feeling poems and Grade VII wrote pledges and researched on animals and plants that are on the verge of extinction.

Grade VIII organized non uniform day and a book drive. From the money collected they bought school bags and rain coats for the students of Bal Chandra School in Rayale,

Kavre where Grade VI students go for their overnight trip.

Vertical garden was set up by Grade IX near the A Level building and a fiery debate on the topic, Fight against Illegal Trade in Wildlife was conducted by Grade X. The students of Grade X also cleaned the UN Park. What an eventful environment week!

enrichment clubs

In this term, two afterschool enrichment activities for students from Grades VI to VIII were initiated namely, French Language and Swimming lessons. The students have been participating enthusiastically in both the activities. Keep up the good work students!

pta /pr meeting

An informal gathering was organized to welcome the new Parents Representatives and the new PTA members on 6 July. We also thanked the outgoing PTA members and Parent Representatives on this day. It was a wonderful opportunity as the teachers and parents got to mingle over tea and light snacks. Thank you, Parent Representatives.

Environment Day - Grade X cleaning the UN ParkGrade I working with clay

conducted at Nepal Eye Hospital Tripureshwor on 19 and 20 June, 2016. This year too, a Writer’s Workshop was conducted by Ms Kalpana Parajuli, Ms Beth Norford and Ms Deepa Dixit. An Illustrator’s Workshop was also conducted by Ms Promina Shrestha and Mr Santa Hitang.

Seventeen Unit II students took part in a workshop organized by United Nations Information Centre at Budhanilkantha School. The aim of the art workshop was to encourage students to learn about Sustainable Development Goals and to express their vision of the world through art.

bank street visitors at rbs

This term we had three visitors from Bank Street College of Education, USA. They were involved in the classrooms with teachers and students as well as conducting trainings for teachers at RBS. They

were also engaged in teacher training sessions organized by Rato Bangala Foundation which was attended by the teachers from RBS and various other schools. We would like to thank Ms Melissa Davis, Ms Amabel Theresa Japitana and Ms Hayley F Andrews for sharing their expertise with us.

sports

Several inter-house competitions were held for our junior grades this term. The second graders had hopping and catching competition in which Green House stood first with Blue and Yellow in the second and third position. Blue House stood first in the Grade Three hopping and catching and kickball competition. Grade Four had football and basketball tournaments for both boys and girls and a kho kho competition. Green House stood first in the boys and girls football, Blue House finished off first in the boys

basketball and Green House in the girls basketball. Grade Five girls had their football tournament in which Blue House finished first, closely followed by Green and Yellow in the second and third place.

Inter-house football competition was held from Grades VI to VIII. In the sixth grade mixed category, Orange stood first followed by Yellow and Green. In the grade seven boys’ category, Green House secured the first position followed by Orange and Yellow in the second and third. Green House stood first in the football competitions played by Grade VIII boys, Grade VIII girls and Grade VII boys.

Friendly basketball matches for middle-school boys and girls were held against Lincoln School and Kamal Higher Secondary School. Our school girls’ football team finished second in the St. Xavier’s Girls Football Tournament 2016.
