2.3 Individual components

All RAUVISIO crystal components can be ordered individually:

Laminate (high gloss / matt)RAUVISIO crystal is a coextruded, polymer surface, which consists of multiple layers:

1.6 mm: Transparent layer Acrylate (PMMA)0.4 mm: Pigmented, coloured layer Acrylic / styrene copolymer

Due to the 2.0 mm thick material combination, RAUVISIO crystal enables you to create a real glass effect with outstanding properties with regard to adhesion to the substrate material. The laminate is available either in high gloss or matt versions.

Fig. 2-3 RAUVISIO crystal glass laminate in high gloss versus the matt version

Balancing sheet (embossed)For the surface – wooden substrate system solution, a technically coordinated balancing sheet was developed with an optimal design based on the technical properties of the composite. Thanks to the material thickness of the balancing sheet of 2.0 mm, the warpage under the effects of heat and cold as well as fluctuating air humidity is minimised. The functional principle of the balancing sheet is based on harmonised material parameters in particular in regard to heat expansion and the forces incurred.

Edge collectionREHAU offers two perfectly balanced edge designs for RAUVISIO crystal. RAUKANTEX visions pro in the duo-design look creates the effect of a filigree glass plate thanks to the top, transparent leg. RAUKANTEX colour pure/pro, in either high gloss or matt finish, creates a glass effect by fitting a 45° bevel. All edges are also available as RAUKANTEX pro joint edge as an option.

2.4 Pressed RAUVISIO crystal composite plate

In addition to the individual product components, in particular the right processing parameters are critical for the permanent, high quality of the system component. To ensure the quality of the pressed plate, REHAU offers the system component made from surface – substrate – balancing sheet as a large pressed board (1300 x 2800 mm).

Fig. 2-6 Pressed RAUVISIO crystal composite board in the colour bianco

The pressing of the individual components is carried out by authorised REHAU fabricators. The prerequisite for

this is checking and fulfilling the defined quality requirements. These are monitored by TÜV Rheinland.

4.1 Transport and loading information

When the goods arrive the external packaging should be checked immediately for signs of damage:

- If there is any damage, open the packaging in the presence of the haulier and obtain their acceptance of the damage to the goods

- The haulier's driver is to confirm this by giving their name, the haulier, date and signature.

- The damage is to be reported to the haulier within 24 hours.Otherwise the haulier's insurance will not accept liability!

DeliveryThe boards or laminate are shipped on appropriate square timbers or a pallet depending on the shipping type due to flatness required.

- Following delivery of the packaging units, unload with a forklift or similar equipment.

- If the appropriate technology is not available, the boards can be unloaded by hand. When doing this, ensure that the boards do not become dirty and are not subjected to any mechanical loads. - When unloading by hand, suitable protective equipment such as

gloves must be worn as sharp edges can cause cuts.- When handling, use transport tools such as suction lifters, lifting

handles and board transporters, see also section “6.1 Unpacking”.- Bending is not permitted during horizontal transport of the

RAUVISIO crystal boards.

4.2 Packaging

Protect boards with foam non-woven material. With RAUVISIO crystal the narrow sides as well as the

surface must be protected. The protection of the surfaces must also be ensured for the RAUVISIO crystal slim. In particular when relocating, picking and processing the boards, dirt that could penetrate between the individual boards must be avoided or removed. Otherwise the stack pressure / intrinsic weight acting on the boards will inevitably result in pressure points on the laminate surfaces. - Protect surfaces with foam non-woven material.

This will avoid marks being caused on the surface when stacking components.

12

4.3 Internal transport and storage

Internal transportThe RAUVISIO crystal board material or laminate should be transported lying flat and level as well as supported along its length. Transport with the supplied packaging variant is recommended for this purpose (no repacking recommended).

StorageRAUVISIO crystal is supplied on pallets or squared timbers with the appropriate protective boards to cover them. The packaging units with RAUVISIO crystal are stackable. Due to the stacking pressure, however, it is not permitted for more than five units to be stored on top of one another.

Protect packaging units. The packaging units are to be protected against

damage, high temperature and humidity fluctuations as well as high UV levels of artificial lighting or direct sunlight.

Store the boards flat and level. The RAUVISIO crystal board material must lie flat and even and must be stored so that it is supported along its length. Storage on the packaging units supplied is recommended for this purpose. Otherwise a minimum of a level and aligned 5-plank storage is required (see diagram). This is the only way to prevent bending or warping.

Fig. 4-1 Pallet packaging

Fig. 4-2 5-plank storage

In the event of improper storage not in line with the storage regula-tions described above (pallet or at least 5-plank storage), no assur-ance of decor warping can be given.

The material must be stored in closed, heated rooms in which the room temperature is between 15 – 25 °C and the relative air humidity is between 40 – 60 %.

Before opening the packaging unit, depending on the time of year adequate acclimatisation of the goods at room temperature for at least 48 hours must be ensured.

After opening and removing a partial quantity, ensure that the cover plate remains when the goods are placed back into storage to prevent contamination and the asymmetrical temperature/humidity penetration (due to drafts or heating air) and thus counteract warping effects as well as surface damage.

Storage before and after affixing the laminateAll materials that are glued to each other must be acclimatised for an appropriate period of time and must not demonstrate any temperature variations.

Storage immediately after gluing must take place in closed, heated rooms. Ensure that the storage temperature does not exceed 60 °C.

5.1 Edgeband material

The use of a RAUKANTEX edgeband material is recommended to create a uniform appearance between the RAUVISIO crystal surface and the narrow surface. The best visual results are achieved by using RAUKANTEX pro. There is no join visible thanks to the pigmented polymer functional layer matching the edge colour. The RAUKANTEX edgeband product range can be supplied to match the surface in the materials ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) or PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate).

5.2 Processing single-layer laminate

5.2.1 Substrate material

Wooden substrates, lightweight boards or composite material substrates are considered for use as a substrate material for RAUVISIO crystal. To meet the high demands on the surface it is critical that the substrate is selected with the intended application in mind.

In principle the substrate should be chosen so as to ensure sufficient flatness. This is the basic requirement for flatness in the pressed final product.

The surface structure of the substrate is another factor for an attractive appearance. A delicate surface structure is advantageous for an even and therefore high-quality surface. An MDF board is recommended as a substrate material here. This has a very delicate surface structure from which only small fibres are removed during processing (sawing, milling, drilling, gluing). In contrast, the amounts of fibres removed from a chipboard, OSB or plywood are considerably greater and there is a risk that these cracks/impurities will penetrate the laminate and be considered "faults". With chipboard, particles may come out of the middle layer that leave pressure points in the laminate. This hazard does not arise when using an MDF substrate.

An MDF substrate is recommended for a high-quality surface finish.

5.2.2 Adhesive

In addition to choosing a suitable substrate, the selection of the right adhesive is important for the functionality of the system. For this purpose, single-component reactive PU hotmelts have become increasingly popular in recent years. These adhesives can be applied to the board or substrate easily using rollers. A short press-down time

is usually sufficient to ensure a high initial strength. To ensure high surface quality, pressing should be carried out with a continuous roller lamination system. The hotmelt adhesives react with the humidity/moisture in the material and the temperature.

When choosing a suitable adhesive type, ensure sufficient adhesive force to overcome the forces occurring between the wood substrate and plastic laminate in different climatic conditions, and avoid the plastic laminate sliding over the wood substrate and as a result the join opening becoming open to the edge as well as general signs of delamination.

Ensure adequate adhesion/final strength. An adhesion strength of approx. 80% is achieved after

just a few hours, the adhesive joint takes a maximum of 7 days to achieve its final strength.

Check bond.In particular with special applications, the bond should be independently checked in accordance with requirements.

5.2.3 Balancing sheet

To qualify a functioning total system that remains dimensionally stable under the effects of temperature and moisture, a balancing sheet is required that ensures stability under changing climatic conditions. Without a balancing sheet, decor warping is highly likely with RAUVISIO crystal.

Generally a symmetrical composition is optimal when it comes to warpage. To do this a special polymer balancing sheet has been developed that is equivalent in thickness and composition to the glass laminate and thus has similar properties under different climatic loads, minimising signs of warpage. This should be implemented generally. For custom solutions, component tests may be required to qualify the whole combination. The use of the required balancing sheet must be agreed in the individual case with the REHAU applications engineering department. Please contact your REHAU sales office in this regard.

6.1 Unpacking

Before opening the packaging unit, adequate acclimatisation of the goods at room temperature for at least 48 hours must be ensured depending on the time of year.

Carefully unpack the boards. When opening the packaging, make sure that the

surfaces are not damaged with sharp objects or by being moved. Suitable lifting equipment must be used to separate the boards.

Open the package with scissors. Do not use sharp objects!

1. Cut the packaging tape.2. Cut the protective film vertically.3. Carefully raise the top board vertically upwards, without shifting it,

with 2 persons and 4 vacuum lifting tools or remove carton if individually packed.

4. Dirt which can enter between the individual boards must be completely avoided or removed.

6.2 Check boards and laminates

Please check the RAUVISIO crystal system components for the following points before further processing and

additional finishing of the goods is carried out (see section “6.4 Documents for material warranty”):- External damage, such as cracks or nicks- Surface damage or missing areas- Flatness (when purchasing pressed boards)- Surface tension of the rear of the laminate (when purchasing

individual laminate)- Colour uniformity within the production batch

The surfaces of RAUVISIO crystal are always supplied with a protective film affixed. Despite this protective film, it may be that there are slight scratches or pressure points / missing areas in the laminates on delivery. These cannot be entirely excluded for technical production reasons and do not constitute a direct reason for complaint.

When grouping different laminates into one order, ensure that only laminates of the same production number are used. If the production numbers are different, the colour compatibility must be checked prior to processing.

A check for a colour match must be carried out in daylight, but not in bright sunlight as there may be isolated areas of minor superficial damage to the surface on delivery. These cannot be entirely excluded for technical production reasons in industrial manufacturing and do not constitute a direct reason for complaint.

The costs incurred when checking the points given above cannot be covered by REHAU. This also applies to

any follow-up costs incurred in the onward processing of faulty goods.

6.3 Conditioning

RAUVISIO crystal and all other materials to be pro-cessed, e.g. edgebands, are to be conditioned prior to

processing at room temperature (min. 18°C) for a period of at least 48 hours.

Processing is also carried out at room temperature.Ensure that acclimatisation of all boards is carried out in particular in the colder months. If there is insufficient acclimati-sation of the laminate on the inside due to the stack size, the duration should be adjusted accordingly.

6.4 Documents for material warranty

To ensure traceability with complaints, the delivery notes of the goods must be kept including the shipping labels.

The inkjet printing on the narrow side of the substrate can also be used for the unique assignment to a production batch. This must be given to the REHAU sales office in the event of a complaint.

7.1 Proper handling of RAUVISIO boards

Placing the boards on the machine tableThe machine table must be of sufficient size, must not have any sharp edges and must be thoroughly cleaned.Alternative: Cover the machine table with a clean base (chipboard, carton, etc.) or position the board rotated, protective film downwards and balancing sheet upwards.

Cutting the boards to sizeThe nesting process is recommended to cut the boards to size. When cutting to size using a saw, observe the instructions for positioning the boards on the machine table (see above). In this case, use a scorer.

Between processing stepsAfter milling/sawing, all foreign bodies must be removed and all surfaces cleaned.

For transport, position the boards vertically and separated on appropriate trolleys.Alternative: Stack the workpieces on a pallet in layers with clean and cushioning carton/foam liner.

Edging the workpiecesWhen edging the workpieces, use antistatic agents to prevent chips from adhering.Ensure that the boards are clean and in good condition on arriving for processing.Any chips produced must be reliably carried off via extraction.

Drilling and millingWhen drilling/milling, the chips must be reliably removed, e.g. via extraction, blowing, etc.

Packing the workpiecesStack the workpieces in layers with clean and absorbent intermediate carton/foam layers on a pallet. Use a transport retainer to prevent damage due to slipping, etc.

7.2 Preparing the individual laminate boards

7.2.1 Pre-treatment of the laminate and substrate

RAUVISIO crystal is treated with a Corona pre-treatment on the styrene-copolymer underside. This pre-treatment ensures a good bond of the laminate to the adhesive. Good adhesion is ensured thanks to high wettability of the surface. The wettability can be established using a test ink. The measure of this is the surface tension which is indicated in the unit [mN/m]. It has been shown that the surface tension decreases with time, so it is recommended to process the laminate within one year.

If the surface tension is less than 38 mN/m, the ABS rear side must be treated again. This can be carried out via flame, Corona/plasma treatment or priming, for example.

Before the laminate is adhered to the substrate, both must undergo a cleaning process. Here it is important that after cleaning there are no more foreign particles on the top and bottom of the laminate. This is because foreign bodies could leave marks during the lamination process that are visible only after the protective film is removed.

7.2.2 After production of the pressed plate

Even after the laminate is pressed, it is necessary to ensure that no foreign particles penetrate the individual layers or that they are reliably removed to avoid pressure marks in the surface that may arise due to the resultant stacking pressure.

Before further transport is carried out, a resting/curing time must be observed for at least 24 hours.

For further processing, a check must be carried out depending on the adhesive system and ambient environment to determine when further processing steps can be carried out. The product data sheet for the adhesive can be used for this purpose.

For picking/storage of individual components, it is advisable to protect the areas with fleece or similar. This will avoid marks being caused on the surface when stacking components.

16

7.3 Mechanical processing of RAUVISIO crystal

RAUVISIO crystal can be processed with most approved and sharp woodworking tools. For machining the polyethylene protective foil must remain on the high gloss surface. Tears in and delamination of the laminates must be prevented by using suitable tools.

To check the quality of the RAUVISIO crystal system solution test processing on samples is recommended.

Optimum machine parameters, tool configuration and cutting speeds should be established individually prior to production using a series of samples. The technical department at REHAU and your tool manufac-turer will be pleased to support you with this.

7.3.1 Cutting

Various factors are responsible for a good cutting result: - Correct saw blade projection - Feed speed - Tooth shape - Tooth separation- Speed - Cutting speed

Depending on the cutting volume, carbide or diamond circular saw blades may be used.

7.3.1.1 Cutting RAUVISIO crystal

Final trimming sawsSaws with a larger number of teeth are generally recommended.

The best cut quality is achieved with the trapezoid flat bevel (TR-FL-FA) tooth shape combination. Saws with an alternating tooth shape and front axis angle provide good cutting results. Saw blades with hollow teeth produce poorer cutting quality (breaks in the outer layer). Minor tears can generally be tolerated in the subsequent formatting of the boards in the edging process.Good edges on both sides can be achieved using an appropriate scorer.

Optimal saw blade projection: 20 – 30 mmRecommended cutting speed: 60 – 70 m/sFeed per tooth: 0.03 – 0.05 mm

Fig. 7-1 Alternating blade Fig. 7-2 Trapezoidal/flat (TR-F)

Fig. 7-3 Trapezoidal/flat/bevel (TR-F-Fa)

Fig. 7-4 Saw blade projection

Board cutting sawsOn board cutting systems, good results are achieved with the trapezoidal/flat tooth shape (TR-FL).

Good edges on both sides are achieved using an appropriate scorer. Scorers with an alternate tooth geometry and high setting angle (approx. 25 °) have been tried and tested in practise. An alternative is processing with the front with the polyethylene protective film downwards. The saw blade projection should be set according to the diameter:

7.3.1.2 Cutting RAUVISIO crystal slim

As RAUVISIO crystal slim is a polymer composite, to achieve high quality cutting without grooves or breaks, a suitable plastic saw blade is recommended. Plastic saw blades feature a large number of teeth and a negative rake angle.

Fig. 7-5 Negative rake angle

Optimal saw blade projection: approx. 10 mmRecommended cutting speed: 60 – 70 m/secFeed per tooth: 0.01 – 0.02 mm

Saw on an adequately sized, level surface. As each potential vertical movement reduces the cutting quality, the RAUVISIO crystal slim board should be securely fixed between two MDF panels before sawing if required.

Edge processing with sandpaper/polishing pasteDeburr the edges. To smooth the edges, use 400 grade sandpaper first, then grind using 600 grade sandpaper. For polishing, use a suitable fine polishing paste and a soft cloth.

7.3.2 Milling on continuous systems

The material can essentially be machined using solid carbide or carbide tipped tools, carbide insert cutters or diamond-tipped cutters. However, the tools must have cutters with alternately axis angles.

Shaft runouts can occur with indexable cutters. The use of the tools in clamping systems with high concentricity has definite advantages.A clear edge in the field of polymeric glass laminate cannot be achieved using a traditional cutter. If this is necessary, special polishing cutters and/or downstream mono-crystalline diamond cutters (MKD cutters) must be used.

Milling machines for continuous systems

Tool Chippers with low cutting pressure are recommended for this purpose.

Cutting speed 80 m/sTooth feed 0.15 – 0.20 mm

Table mill and cutters for continuous systems

Tool Cutter heads with carbide inserts (polished) or diamond-tipped (DP) cutter with the largest possible axial angle are recommended. Polished cutting and precision milled clearance at the rear are recommended.

7.3.3 Special engraved milling of the surface and processing of the pure polymer (e.g. RAUVISIO crystal slim)

To give the surface different looks/accents, the appropriate stationary machining can be used to add surface milling/V-grooves to the polymer material.

Different cutting materials and axial directions of the tools are used depending on the required quality.

To produce a matte machined finish, a carbide milling tool can be used.

For a high-gloss surface, a minimum cut depth of 0.1 – 0.2 mm with monocrystalline diamond cutters is required, which is why pre-milling/clearing of the geometry with carbide cutter is needed depending on the depth of the desired milling. In this process, ensure that an equal quality of both milling flanks is achieved only by appropriate process-ing in the same direction.

Ideal processing parametersFeed: 2 m/minSpeed: 18,000 rpm

Similar demands on the tool technology and machine parameters arise in processing the pure laminate or RAUVISIO crystal slim (e.g. for attaching a bevelled edge geometry).

7.3.4 Drilling

Dowel holes in the polymer layer of glassConventional carbide dowel drills give the best results. Satisfactory drillholes can be achieved using drilling pins. However, fast initial drilling is required (F-F mode). With slower initial drilling (S-F mode), long plastic shavings form around the drill.

Feed: 3 – 4 m/minSpeed: 4500 rpm

Dowel holes in the polymer balancing sheetConventional carbide dowel drills can be used. The best hole edges can be achieved with VHW high-performance dowel drills.Fast initial drilling is required (F-F mode). With slow initial drilling (S-F mode), plastic chips form around the drill. Good results in the balancing sheet can also be achieved using drilling pins.

Feed: 3 – 4 m/minSpeed: 4500 rpm

Through-holesThe best hole edges on the inlet side (glass laminate) and exit side (balancing sheet) can be achieved using standard carbide drills.

Feed: 3 – 4 m/minSpeed: 4500 rpm

Rapid initial drilling is required (F-F-F mode). Slow initial drilling (S-F-S mode) cannot be used here either as plastic chips form around the drill.

Hinge and cup hinge holesStandard cylinder head drills are recommended. Slow initial drilling (S-F mode) almost inevitably results in the hole edge melting and in the formation of long plastic chips that can form around the drill.

Feed: 1.5 – 2 m/minSpeed: 3000 rpm

Speeds over n = 4000 rpm are not recommended.

Hole cut-outs with RAUVISIO crystal slimGenerally recommended for holes (e.g. socket cutouts) is the use of a router that can be moved safely thanks to a thrust ring and use of a template fitted on top for the required cut.

When using drills, sharp saw blades with slightly obtuse centring drills should be used. To prevent the hole edge cracking, the hole should only be pre-drilled halfway from one side initially. Then drill from the opposite side and finish the hole.

7.3.5 Service life

The service life of the tools and the final result of the work naturally depend on multiple factors, e.g. on the material, tool and machine. Service life tests on the RAUVISIO crystal material showed a longer service life than when machining melamine-faced chipboard. Due to the variety of machines and different complexity of the tasks, we recommend clarifying customer requirements with the relevant REHAU sales office or the tool manufacturer.

The findings shown were developed in collaboration with established tool manufacturers, detailed recommendations on machine parame-ters and tool recommendations are available from your REHAU sales office.

7.4 Edging with RAUKANTEX pro

Fig. 7-6 Joint edging – RAUKANTEX visions pro

Due to the high quality surface of RAUVISIO crystal, REHAU recommends the use of RAUKANTEX pro for both edging options below.See processing instructions / TLV RAUKANTEX pro (PMMA and ABS) as well as RAUKANTEX visions / magic 3D (V-M 25/01) and RAUKANTEX color. For more information, please contact your REHAU sales office.

The resulting component quality (e.g. adhesion of the edgeband, appearance and application properties) depends on the machine settings and the board quality used and must be checked by the fabricator.

Optimum machine parameters, tool configuration and cutting speeds are to be established individually prior to production using a series of samples; the REHAU applications engineering department will be happy to support you with this.

7.4.1 The "Duo solution" – RAUKANTEX visions pro

Fig. 7-7 RAUKANTEX visions pro

The RAUKANTEX visions pro edging materials for invisible-join edge processing are made from the material PMMA. They are designed for processing on edge gluing machines with all available invisible joint technologies (laser, hot air, NIR, plasma). See processing instructions / TDS RAUKANTEX pro (PMMA) and RAUKANTEX visions / magic 3D (V-M 25/01).

20

A transparent polymer functional layer is applied to the edgeband materials. The suitability of RAUKANTEX pro is checked by the customer using processing tests.

When processing RAUKANTEX visions pro, ensure in particular that sufficient pressure is applied to the narrow, transparent area of the edge through to the transparent area of the glass laminate as well as synchronisation between the edgeband run-in and board feed to obtain optimum transparency in the glass effect.

The joint quality in terms of cracks and grooves in the transparent area depends on the chipping system, miller position and milling quality, milling geometry, etc.

Possible variants:Decoration of the edgeband leg, e.g. with a stainless steel effect, wood effect, etc.

Fig. 7-9 Variety using RAUKANTEX decorative designs

The "DUO solution" RAUKANTEX visions pro is only available as a joint edge with polymer functional layer.

Due to the transparent edge leg, processing with adhesive is not possible.

A joint edge is used to create an invisible and functional joint between the board and edgeband. A transparent polymer functional layer is applied to the reverse of the edgeband material to do this. This creates a transparent bond between the board and edgeband and completes the glass effect.

This system solution made up of the board and joint edge creates a complete, seamless edge and therefore a hermetically sealed full jacket around the wooden substrate with plastic elements.

7.4.2 The "Uno solution" – RAUKANTEX color pure/pro

Fig. 7-17 RAUKANTEX color pure/pro in high gloss version

As an alternative to the duo edging with RAUKANTEX visions pro, there is the option of edging with a colour matched RAUKANTEX color (referred to below as the "Uno solution"). This can be in contrast to the duo-edge both as an adhered version for traditional adhesive processing and as an invisible joint version.

REHAU offers a colour-coordinated edge portfolio for the RAUVISIO crystal decorative designs in gloss and matt, which ensures a homogeneous appearance to the laminate surfaces and in the corner copying area especially in conjunction with a colour-coordinated polymer functional layer.

In addition, the Uno version uses an adhesion promoter edge to produce an interesting edge version, especially when there is no option for an invisible joint. The glass effect in the edge area is used here to its best advantage with a 45° bevel milled on the edgeband and surface, exposing the glass laminate.

Fig. 7-18 45° bevel over edgeband and surface

Fig. 7-19 45° bevel over edge and surface material

Different cutting materials and axial directions of the tools and geometries can be used here, providing a corresponding surface pattern in the milled area (matt/gloss) depending on the quality level required.

To achieve the most uniform surface appearance, the critical factors are the high concentricity of the milling machine, high number of cutting edges and low feed rate to minimise the planing strokes and tight tool guidance/tension and low, uniform chip removal when using a scraper to avoid varying gloss effects and cracks/grooves in the surface material.

There is further potential for optimisation in terms of gloss in the milled area by using downstream special machining processes that should be evaluated on an individual basis depending on requirements.

The "Uno solution" is available both as an invisible edge RAUKANTEX color pro with polymer functional layer and

as an adhesive promoter edge RAUKANTEX color pure via the REHAU Express Collection.

7.4.3 Edge processing with RAUVISIO crystal slim

If the edge quality created using a machine is not adequate, sandpa-per/polishing paste can be used on-site to optimise the result. The edges should be deburred first. To smooth the edges, first use a coarser sandpaper (400 – 600) and then finish with a finer sandpaper (1500 – 3000). For polishing, use a suitable fine polishing paste and a soft cloth.

7.5 The edged component

In addition to pure laminate and pressed large boards, REHAU offers customers the option to purchase laser-edged components as required by using the configurator.

Fig. 7-20 Laser-edged component

For the front usage area (nominal dimension 19 mm with Duo edge), successful certification was completed in collaboration with TÜV Rheinland in accordance with AMK guidelines. RAUVISIO crystal is designed for vertical applications indoors. For horizontal applications, consultation with the technical applications department at REHAU is required, or this is carried out as the sole responsibility of the user.

8.1 Front application

RAUVISIO crystal was originally developed for front applications; it combines the high quality glass look with the positive properties of the polymer material, thus providing maximum flexibility in production using traditional woodworking processes. Whether sawing, milling, drilling or edging with appropriate Rehau edgeband solutions, it is possible to create a complete glass effect front without special processes. The use of the polymer balancing sheet in particular also ensures sufficient flatness which is essential for a front application.

Fig. 8-1 RAUVISIO crystal as front application

In addition, RAUVISIO crystal slim can be used as an infill. When used as an infill, the thermal expansion coefficient must be taken into account.

Fig. 8-2 RAUVISIO crystal slim as front infill material

8.2 Niche application

In addition, RAUVISIO crystal slim or edged RAUVISIO crystal can be used as a splashback rear wall.

When installed as a splashback rear panel, the thermal expansion coefficient for the relevant application must always be taken into account. Experience has shown that a general distance/joint of min. 4 mm from adjacent elements such as walls, wall cabinets or worktops is recommended.

RAUVISIO crystal is a thermoplastic polymer material and is therefore only designed for max. surface temperatures of 80 °C. For this reason, the relevant adequate minimum distances must be observed depending on the resultant radiated temperatures.

In the event of improper use, such as hotplates that are permanently uncovered and switched on, or direct contact with hot pots/pans, etc., temperature damage to the surface may occur.

To avoid these potential dangers, panels to protect against the heat made from heat-resistant materials, such as stainless steel, can be used behind the hotplate.

For the surface mounting of RAUVISIO crystal on the rear wall, bonding with silicone is recommended. For this purpose, the substrates to be bonded must be level, clean and free of grease, and the instructions from the silicone manufacturer must be observed.

Before using the silicone, it should be tested on an inconspicuous place to ensure that no damage to the polymer occurs.

The silicone should be applied as dots (approx. thickness 6 mm), vertically at a spacing of approx. 50 mm apart. In the area of the hotplate, a smaller dot spacing of 25 mm is recommended due to the higher temperature exposure.

50 mm

25 mm

300

mm

Double-sided adhesive tape can be used in places for fixing. When fixing to the wall, appropriate pressure should be exerted to ensure that a maximum distance of 2 mm is created between the board and the wall, and sufficient adhesion can be ensured.

Joints where wall connections (as shown above) must be observed due to the thermal expansion, for example due to corner joins, must also be sealed and grouted with silicone joins. This is especially important if RAUVISIO crystal could come into contact with moisture.

Connection or expansion joints are maintenance joints which must be regularly checked and replaced if necessary.

The latest guidelines from the "Central German Construction Associa-tion / Trade Association for Tiles and Natural Stone" for the "execution of bonded seals with tile and panel coverings for indoor use" must be followed and observed to ensure there is no water ingress resulting in structural damage. REHAU cannot accept any liability for any damage arising from incorrect processing not carried out in line with regula-tions and instructions.

Please check whether or not there are country-specific regulations for the areas surrounding hotplates and if

so, observe these regulations accordingly.

The compatibility of the silicone used with RAUVISIO crystal must be tested independently by the customer.

Damage to the RAUVISIO surface due to improper handling

The following instructions should be observed to avoid physical damage.

Only transport large size boards on pallets with level and stable base protection boards along the length (e.g. MDF 18).

Always unload / load from the short side in the centre.

Do not store large size boards and fabricated boards in damp rooms and not directly on the ground.

Do not store large size sheets and fabricated sheets either outside or in areas with UV light sources.

Acclimatise fabricated elements prior to installation for at least 24 hours at room temperature (min. 18°C). At delivery temperatures below 5°C the elements must be conditioned for at least 48 hours on all sides.

Do not rest any objects on large boards and fabricated elements, as this could lead to damage.

High gloss boards made from RAUVISIO crystal have an environmen-tally-safe polyethylene foil applied for protection during transport and storage (does not apply to satinated, matt version). The surface protection should remain on the board until it is time to use the finished part at the end customer.

RAUVISIO crystal is suitable for vertical applications indoors (in particular furniture fronts and splash back applications). Special applications extending beyond the guaranteed properties given above must be tested independently or for the relevant application by the fabricator / customer or advice or approval should be obtained from the manufacturer where necessary.

Adhesion using silicone is recommended for the full-coverage fixing of RAUVISIO crystal slim (such as in niche applications). To do this, the surfaces being adhered must be level, clean and free of grease and the instructions from the silicone manufacturer must be observed.

The silicone should be applied as dots at a spacing of approx. 50 mm. Expansion joints must be taken into account depending on the installation situation.

The installation of the acclimatised material is not permitted at temperatures < 15°C.

All materials and components must be checked for damage or defects prior to processing / assembly.

To avoid stress cracking during processing and assembly, temporary storage must take place prior to installation exclusively in the original packaging in frost-free and closed rooms.

The narrow sides of the wooden substrate without edgeband must not come into contact with moisture. The cut edges are always to be sealed with suitable edging (RAUKANTEX visions pro or RAUKANTEX color pure/pro).

All drill holes in the wooden substrate boards are to be sealed during assembly so that they are watertight.

Damage to the surface can be caused by strong chemical substances, e.g. strong solvents, special cleaners (e.g. drain cleaners, industrial cleaners, etc.) as well as aggressive scouring agents.

Scratches can be caused during cleaning by the following elements:Grains of sand or similar, abrasive scrubbing utensils / cleaning sponges, etc.

Treatment with an anti-static plastic cleaner is an effective measure to minimise static charging.

Do not stand on RAUVISIO crystal products

Do not cut with sharp objects
