RUNNING SHOES ARE BECOMING MORE LIKE
FEET?
3
2
After decades of research and development, sports footwear companies have come to the conclusion that when it comes to improved running performance, nothing beats… the human foot.
“Research indicates the risk of overuse injuries to muscles, bones and joints, as well as ankle sprains, is lessened by running barefoot,” confi rms sports physician Dr John Kellett of the Australian Institute of Sport.
Still, only the most determined runner would venture shoe-free around the urban jungle’s obstacle course of dog doo and broken beer bottles. So, enter the shoe that works like a foot.
First off the blocks was Adidas, with its Feet You Wear technology; the Nike Free range “offers the extraordinary feel and natural foot movement associated with barefoot training”; and Asics is proud of its IGS (Impact Guidance System), a “design philosophy that allows the athlete’s foot to perform in a more natural manner”.
Going further towards what nature intended is the FiveFingers range, described by distributor Max DeLacy as providing “barefoot sensitivity and benefi ts, with total protection and Spider-Man-like grip”.
Despite looking like rubber gloves for feet, they’re a hit with ultra-marathoners, personal trainers and even The Wiggles, who wear them for their more athletic routines. But, before giving your old trainers their marching orders, DeLacy recommends wearing the FiveFingers sporadically at fi rst; the increased freedom of movement will take some getting used to. Don’t do as he did with his fi rst pair, and dash straight out for a 6km run. “I spent the next three days sliding down stairs on my butt because my calves were so sore.” One step at a time, folks.

1. Stacking up There is nothing quite as appealing as a stack of tonally beautiful bed linen and cushions. Shown here is a picture-perfect selection from Aura Haven, featuring pleating and embroidery to create subtle texture. Retail prices range from $59.95 for the ‘Messa’ sequin cushion (pictured, top of pile) to $279 for the ‘Linear’ crushed coverlet (at bottom of pile). Call (03) 9552 6090 or visit www.aurahome.com.au. 2. Dark Star While painterly and beautiful on the surface, the work of young Adelaide artist Morgan Allender hints at shadowy, deeper forces in her representations of Australian landscape, fauna and flora. Definitely a name to watch. Night Scent (oil on linen, 152cm x 183cm), $6800, from Helen Gory Galerie. Call (03) 9525 2808 or visit www.helengory.com.3. Waste Not For years we have had an enamel bowl beside the sink for all our potato peelings, apple cores, etc. Now, I am the proud owner of a proper porcelain compost bin with, wait for it, carbon filters. Made by Ecology and priced at $59.95, the bin has a lid and a handle and can be cleaned in the dishwasher. It is distributed by CWM Network, call (03) 9765 5700 for stockists. 4. Flock to it A patterned wallpaper takes on a touch of luxury as flocking gives it a sense of texture and subtle depth. Pictured is ‘Monroe’
wallcovering in Graphite (also in Lime, Coffee and Vermilion), $307 per 10-metre roll, from the Rossini range by Wilman Interiors. Distributed by Hoad Fabrics, 1800 812 538, www.hoad.com.au.5. Cards sharp Raven & Lamb combines the talents of award-winning photographer Kata Bayer and designer Maz Lowe. Together, they are collaborating to produce gift cards with a difference. Of the six ranges that are available, I particularly like the boldly graphic ones shown here. The cards are printed locally with vegetable-based ink and retail for $6.95 each. Visit www.ravenandlamb.com.au.6. High Wire This locally designed outdoor chair is named ‘Dinner Friday’ and is part of the Palm Springs collection by Brian Steendyk for BNE Creative. Well priced at $300, it comes in a zinc finish and can be powdercoated in various colours. From BNE Creative, (07) 3839 0400 or ECC Lighting + Furniture, (07) 3100 8842.7. Timeless Piece The neat proportions of this upholstered chair (770mm x 500mm x 860mm) make it ideal for adding a bit of character to a contemporary interior or a charming addition to a traditional one. The neutral fabric adds to its ‘go anywhere’ character. ‘Montparnasse’ occasional chair, $2445, from Coco Republic, 1300 785 039, www.cocorepublic.com.au.
