    What is BluWhat is Blu--ray?ray?

Blu-ray is the name of a next-generation optical disc.

CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray are all discs the same size. However each of these discs can hold more data, audio and

video than the previous Why is this?

In 1998 HDTVs were appearing in the consumer market, However therewas only standard-definition movies available. There was no mediaformat that could store the large amounts of data need to create HDmovies.

The Blu-ray format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback

of high-definition video, as well as storing large amounts of data.

Blu-ray disks offer more than five times the storage of a regular DVD.

Why do we need BluWhy do we need Blu--ray?ray?

How do you read an Optical Disk? How do you read an Optical Disk?

y The digitally encoded audio and video information on a disc is stored inpits, which are spiral grooves that run outward from the center of the disc.

y A laser reads the pits, and plays the audio and video.

y Blu-ray uses a blue-violet laser to read and write data, while DVDs use ared laser and CDs use an Infrared laser.

y The blue laser has a shorter beam (405 nanometers) than a red laser (650

nanometers); this allows the blue laser to focus at a higher precision.

y To have more data on a disc, the pits must be smaller and closer packedtogether.

y The smaller and closer the pits, the more precise the laser that reads thepits must focus.

    History of BluHistory of Blu--rayray

Shuji Nakamura, a professor atthe University of California, SantaBarbara, invented practical bluelaser diodes.

    Using blue laser diodes Sony

teamed up with Pioneer started todevelop technologies to allowmore data to be stored on a disk.

In October of 2000 the first

prototypes were unveiled at theCombined Exhibition of AdvancedTechnologies trade show.

    History of BluHistory of Blu--rayray

In February 2002 the project was officially

announced as Blu-ray and the Blu-rayDisc Association was founded by Sony,Matsushita, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LGElectronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung.

    The Blu-ray Disc physical specifications

were finished in 2004. Early 2006 the BD-ROM specifications

were finalized and a secure Digital rightsmanagement platform was agreed upon.

In an effort to establish each assuccessor to DVD both Blu-ray and HDDVD take on differing strategies.

y HD DVD offers a cheaper product, attempting to gain the attention of the moreprice conscious consumer.

y Sony attempts to gain the support of manyHollywood studios for its Blu-ray discs.

    Data Storage/ Backup

Business are investing in ways to increase backup and datastorage to enable them to store vast amounts of data.

The increase in storage is due to the legal requirements thatbusiness have in regards to archiving and keeping businessrecords.

The need for more storage is also due to the increase ofpaperless business. The Blu-ray Disc has 5-10 times more storage space than the DVD,

which has 5 times more space than the CD.

    TDK

They develop BD-R (write once) and BD-RE (rewritable) in 25 GB and 50 GB.

    High precision Spin Coating

This technology enables the manufacturer to create a smooth and precisecover layer.

Having a smooth layer is important in regards to the smaller bandwidth ofthe blue-violet laser.

    DURABIS2

This technology increases the scratch resistance by 100 times a normaldisc.

It also resists an accumulation of dust. Scratches and dust can make a BD unreadable.

    TDKs special recording layer technology

    Higher speeds of 72Mbps (2x)

There are multiple recording layers possible for more storage.

TDK has prototypes for 100GB and 200GB Blu-ray Disc.

    Java Software Support

Java Software Support was created by JamesGosling.

Java is used to implement interactive menus onBlu-ray discs. (Blu-ray Disc)

Java Software Support is a requirement on all Blu-ray players. Java Virtual Machines will allow updates to Blu-

ray Discs via the internet, adding content such asadditional subtitle languages and promotionalfeatures that are not included on the disc atpressing time. (Blu-ray Disc)

Java Virtual Machines are not a requirement forBlu-ray players, but is a product enhancement thatis an option.

    Hard coating

The data on Blu-ray Discs are closer to thesurface than on DVDs, making it easier for themto be damaged.

Scratches wee a big concern for Blu-ray Discsand a scratch protection coating was created.

    22/33

    Hard Coating

TDK was the first to develop the protectioncoating, which is called Durabis.

Sony and Panasonic invented their own

coating for their discs. Sony sprays its discs with both scratch-

    resistant and anti-static coating.

    Verbatims discs are sprayed withScratchGuard.

The coatings that are sprayed on the discs, will prevent the information on from beingdamaged.

    Conclusion

Blu-ray is a digital media format for optical disks that usesblue laser diode due to its narrow focus point.

Blu-ray has become the industrys new preferred format overHD DVD.

Businesses will be able to use Blu-ray drives in computers

and laptops for more data storage and backup.

    Advantages of Blu-ray

y Java Software Support allows users to have access to menus thatare not preset.

y The hard-coating of Blu-ray will keep the discs from scratches, prolonging the useful life of the disc.

y The copying rate and data storage can hold up to double thestorage rate of a HD DVD, plus the copying rate of both single anddouble layer discs are extremely fast.

    Conclusion cont.

Disadvantages of Blu-rayy Costs to produce the Blu-ray products are high.

y Hardware support is slowly gaining speed, but thePlaystation 3 definitely has helped Blu-ray gain

    popularity.

    The future for Blu-ray

y It is going to become the optical disc format that

    takes over for DVDs.

    Our Opinion

We dont feel that Blu-ray is going to be long lasting.

y With research and development continuouslyintroducing new innovations, we feel that another

innovation will come soon to replace the Blu-rayformat.

y Flash drives are also growing in storage capacity andcan be much more mobile that disks. (example: flashdrive movies)
