Details, Examples, and How it Relates to the Class.
Anorexia Nervosa: Serious eating disorder in which a person refuses to eat enough food to maintain a minimum normal body weight.
Symptoms include: Extreme loss of body weight, slow heart and breathing rates, lowered body temperature, and dry skin.
Characteristics of anorexics: Low self-esteem, concerned with pleasing others, desire becoming thin in order to gain respect and admiration, want to be perfect, and view themselves as fat.
Treatment: Anorexics are hospitalized to stabilize weight and eating habits and have years of treatment with their family members to solve lingering problems. Anorexia nervosa can be treated with the help of mental-health professionals and the cooperation from the patient and the family.

Example: Daisy has been acting differently after a girl called her fat at a party a few months ago.
Anorexia nervosa relates to the class because some of them may have this disorder, or may know someone else who does.
It is important for that class to know about this disorder because it will help them notice the signs and be able to find help.
Teenage girls are more likely to have this disorder. In fact, every 1/100 girls has anorexia nervosa.
STORY STORY
During the summer, Daisy went to a pool party, where a bully told her that she was fat. After casually mentioning it to her mother, Lily, Daisy acted as if she was unscathed by the rude remark. Months later, Lily noticed that her daughter was getting to be underweight, was eating less, and was trying hard to make others happy, instead of making herself happy. Lily recognized the signs: her daughter had anorexia nervosa. So, she talked to her daughter and scheduled a meeting with a professional, who recommended many ways to help Daisy. Because Lily didn’t overlook the signs of anorexia nervosa, she was able to save her daughter.
