This project was centered around the carpenter’s ellipse which is a method of which carpenters use to create an ellipse using string and nails. These are digital drawings that were constructed using the carpenter’s ellipse method. The first rendering which is to the left is that of a bow tie figure. The other 4 renderings are zoomed in views of the bow tie rendering. The reasoning behind zooming in was because they broke some of the symmetry that the bow tie presented and it created more interesting spaces. These rendering was designed in Adobe Illustrator.

A Boolean operation is when two shapes overlap with each other in space which creates a zone of intersection. Each of the shapes can be used to carve out of the other. For this project the description was to use 1/8 bass wood dowels and construct a cube wire frame with other shapes colliding through it. Another deliverable was to construct a solid shape based on the wire-frame model using the boolean operation. The main idea for this project was to capture light spaces that are created through three rectangular prisms colliding through the cube.

Folded plate structures are a type of folding structure, which is applied in a broad range of architectural applications. For this project the description was to use paper folding techniques to create structures that resembles that of a folded plate structure. The deliverables was a column model, a curvature model, and a linear model using the folded paper technique. The goal for the column model was to keep it simple but still have an elegant feel to it. For the linear model the goal was to create a unique space. Last for the curvature model the goal was to create space through curvature.

RULED SURFACESThe definition of a ruled surface is a curved surface that is created by a sequence of straight lines. The project description was to design and build athree dimensional model using the ruled surface technique and create a drawing using the technique. The surface of this model is made out of 1/8 bass wood dowels and the ruled surface lines is made up of thin gage wire. The goal for this model was to have curvature shown at every orientation of the model. For the ruled surface drawing the goal was to show movement through curvature.

The project description was to design apedestrian and bike bridge. Each bridgewas to be at least six feet wide. Other requirements was to have a viewing pointor station, a sitting are that could accommodate 8 people, a joint model, and the design had to incorporate a previous design technique from the semester that was used. Ruled surfaces was the primary technique that was used in this bridge. The bridge is thought of to blend in withthe environment which is a wooden area. Also the bike bridge is hidden to give it a different experience to that of the pedestrian bridge.
