Distribution equipment with bare bus-bars, conductors and connections isalways vulnerable to having phases orphase to ground accidentally bridged.As well as the obvious problemscaused to the network, such events can also endanger protected wildlife.The best solution is one where the vulnerable bare metalwork is insulatedand the wildlife can roam the substa-tions and overhead lines (OHL) withoutdamaging themselves or the equip-ment.

Raychem Medium Voltage Conductor Cover ”MVCC”Raychem MVCC is a flexible cold appliedwrap around insulation cover for use inshort lengths on curved conductor orjumper leads. Secured with UV-stabilizedcable ties it helps outage preventioncaused by birds, animals and debris.Suitable for applications up to 25kV.
Raychem High Voltage Busbar Tape ”HVBT”Raychem HVBT heat-shrinkable tape isideal for use on complex shapes andwhere busbars cannot be disconnected.Raychem HVBT tape shrinks 30% longitudinally while a factory-coatedhot melt adhesive flows and seals thelayers of tape during installation. Aswith other components in the system,the adhesive does not bond to metal-work, allowing easy removal for inspec-tion and maintenance.Available in three widths: 25mm, 50mmand 100mm. A spiral-formed tape version, Raychem overhead line insula-tion tubing OLIT, is also available forease of use on overhead conductors.Raychem Medium Voltage Fusion Tape ”MVFT”For cold applied applications MediumVoltage Fusion Tape is also availablewhich performs the same function.
Raychem High Voltage Insulating Sheet ”HVIS”Raychem HVIS heat-shrinkable sheetshrinks 25% in both directions enablingrapid and reliable insulation of T-joints,L-joints and difficult shapes. The sheetis a two-layer laminate with a heat-shrinkable backing and a hot meltadhesive. Raychem HVIS sheet is cut to size from a roll, held in place aroundthe connection with metal clamps and shrunk with a gas torch until theadhesive flows, sealing the interfaces.Environmentally sealed joints can bemade using Raychem sealing mastic.Available in 10 m rolls or cut sheets.Suitable for applications up to 36kV intwo layers.

Substations
Raychem Bus Connection Insulating Covers ”BCIC”A wide range of standard RaychemBCIC preformed covers is available forany substation equipment connections.Customised covers can be made simplyand economically by forming one ofthe Raychem Raysulate materials.Standard covers can also be easilymodified. Installation is easy with noneed to disconnect busbars. RaychemBCIC covers are held in place with UV-stabilized plastic nuts and bolts, latchesor cable ties, and be easily removed formaintenance. Suitable for applicationsup to 36kV.
Raychem Bus Insulator Squirrel Guard ”BISG”The Raychem BISG squirrel guard is arigid polymeric disc that fits betweenthe sheds of post insulators and equip-ment bushings. It acts as a physicalbarrier preventing animals, such assquirrels and possums, from bridgingthe phase-to-ground clearance. Theanimal must climb over the RaychemBISG, therefore, preventing it fromtouching live conductors and earthplanes at the same time. Installation is quick and simple, with no need todisconnect busbars, and can even bedone live. The part is sized for corediameters from 60mm to 115mm and is suitable for applications up to 36kV.
Substation equipment is vulnerable to flashovers caused by accidentalbridging of phases, or phase to earth.Usually made by birds, animals, vegeta-tion or airborne debris, flashovers canbe very expensive in terms of damageto equipment, reduced reliability and in some cases even electrocution ofprotected species.Almost any event of this nature can beprevented by insulating the strategicallyvulnerable bare metalwork with a combination of Raychem Raysulateproducts.

Raychem Bird Protection Caps ”BCIC”The Raychem BCIC bird cap protectsbirds and other animals from live conductors on insulator crossarms. The flexible polymer means that mostconfigurations of conductor attachmentare easily accommodated. Installation isvery simple, and tool free, some versionscan be installed on an energized line.Suitable for applications up to 36kV.
Raychem Medium Voltage Line Cover ”MVLC”Raychem MVLC is a cold applied retrofitcover that insulates OHL againstflashovers caused by birds, intermittenttree contact and clashing conductors.Installation is made from one position,even with an energized line, by drivingit along the conductor by hand for upto 20 meters, or by an automated toolfor longer distances.Raychem MVLC can be used in manyother applications normally up to 36kV.For increased insulation levels, 40kVand above, information is availableupon request.
Raychem Overhead Line Insulating Channel ”OLIC”Raychem OLIC is a ‘clip-on’ insulatingchannel that provides flashover protection for overhead lines. RaychemOLIC-O sections clip over the conductorand are held in place with UV-stabilizedplastic tie-wraps. Raychem OLIC-C sections clip over the conductor andare held in place with a removable andreusable closure rail. Raychem SMOUVand Raychem SMOE insulation kits combine and adapt standard parts forspecific applications such as bushinginsulation. Suitable for applications up to 25kV
Spreader Rod and ConductorProtector ClipTE Connectivity Low Voltage SpreaderRods are used to maintain the requiredmid-span spacing of low voltage con-ductors and thus prevent clashing.The non-tracking rods are ideal for highpollution and coastal areas and also inareas of high wind.

Raychem High Voltage Booster Sheds ”HVBS”Raychem HVBS booster sheds areloose fitting polymeric collars for insu-lators and bushings, which are spacedfrom the porcelain skirt by short pegsand from the core by tongues. Boostersheds increase the diameter of thebushing in several places and break uplong cascades of lightly contaminatedwater to prevent “heavy wetting”flashovers, which can occur duringlive-line washing or torrential rain.Available to fit insulator core diametersfrom 160mm to 770mm. suitable forapplications up to 500kV.
Raychem High Voltage Creepage Extenders ”HVCE”Raychem HVCE creepage extendersrepresent a long term solution to pollution flashovers by making a permanent addition to the creepagedistance. This increases flashover voltage, reduces leakage current andsurface electrical stress. Creepageextenders also improve the insulatorshape and increase the strike distance.Heat-shrinkable creepage extendersare flexible polymeric skirts, coatedinternally with a track-resistant masticfor bonding to the insulator. These areavailable to fit insulators and bushingsup to 500kV, with shed diameter80mm to over 390mm.Wrap around Raychem HVCE-WAcreepage extenders are cold applied.There is no need to disconnect to install.These are available to fit insulators andbushings up to 500kV with shed diameter 100mm to over 600mm.
System ApplicationBy using a combination of productsdistribution towers can be protectedfrom flashovers and outages causedby birds. Targeting the most trouble-some sections of OHL can reduce thenumber of incidents and save protectedwildlife.Regardless of the application it is possible to create a Raysulate solutionfor any accidental contacts or bridgingproblem.

Recommended clearancesTests on busbars insulated withRaychem BBIT/BPTM tubing haveshown significant reductions in airclearance over conventional air-insu-lated systems. The most importantrequirements for the minimum spacingof the busbars is that the system mustbe free from audible corona at the AC Withstand test voltage and alsowithstands the Impulse test voltage.The possible air clearances are basedon practical testing on a range of busbar sizes and configurations. The detailed clearance reductions andthe application ranges for each of theproducts are listed in the data sheets.Further application data are availablefrom your local representative and inour test reports.

Whetherthe equipment is re-engineered or anewly designed busbar system, theinsulation products provide highly flexible system for all shapes and sizes of conductor.

Raychem ”BBIT/BPTM” busbar insulation tubingRaychem BBIT/BPTM heat-shrinkabletubings are suitable for use on longruns of rectangular or round busbars.These tubes shrink down to 40% oftheir original diameter and, due toexcellent flexibility, conform tightly to awide range of sizes. Raychem BBIT/BPTM tubing slides easily into place,even around several bends and onawkward shapes. Wall thickness is controlled by the heat-shrink process.Available to suit sizes of busbars from5mm to over 250mm. Raychem BPTMis suitable for applications up to 25kVand Raychem BBIT up to 36kV.
