“It’s Another Great Day in Riviera Bay!” 54th YEAR SEPT / OCT, 2014 ISSUE www.rbcanews.com I love this neighborhood and our Sunshine city, but I don’t know what I’ll do if anybody else asks me “Hot enough for ya?” Hey ya’ll, I’ll put up with a few weeks of heat wave rather than months of shoveling snow any day. Speaking about Riviera Bay, the Best Neighborhood In All Of St Pete, you wouldn’t believe some of the calls and emails I get. Some are legitimate gripes that I can help with, and some that think I alone can use some kind of mind control to make their neighbor do what they want them to do. It’s time once again for our “WORLD FAMOUS RIVIERA

BAY YARD SALE”, where strangers buy what you don’t want and block the streets by parking their vehicles anywhere they want to.

To have your location marked on the 500+ maps we distribute and have your street marked with a sign on 4th St and/or 83rd Ave, you can either email Donna Hoover at [email protected] or call 579-3644 before Oct 1st and leave your name, contact number and address of sale. Since RBCA funds are being spent to advertise & print, you must be a current RBCA member to get marked on

RBCA FALL YARD SALE Fri, October 3rd Thru Sun, October 5th

Deadline to have your location on map is Tues, Oct 1st

the map. Membership is only $10 per household and runs from Jan-Dec. A convenient membership form is printed on the back page of this newsletter for you to mail in with your $10 check, made out to the RBCA.

The RBCA places ads in the Tampa Bay Times, St Pete Patch, The Flyer and our Face book page. The ad reads Fri-Sun 8AM-2PM and that dates and times may vary for each location. You are welcome to set your own days and hours for that weekend. If we get rained out 2 of the 3 days we will put the signs out for the following weekend, but we won’t have time for the advertising.

The RBCA will also put up the large “Neighborhood Yard Sale Signs” along 4th Street & 83rd Avenue on Thursday evening. We place these signs based on the people who contact us for the map. If you don’t call or email, your street may not be marked with one of the large sign. We also have a few smaller signs that we can place inside the neighborhood if we have time, but all other signage directing people to your location is up to you. Please be a good neighbor and remove any signs that you have posted when your sale is finished. We will pick-up all of the RBCA signs by Sun night, and remember, junk is something you’ve kept for years and throw away just before you need it.

Next 83rd Ave Adopt-A-Mile Clean-Up, Nov 8th, 9am

Mark your calendars and meet us at the St Pete

Presbyterian Church, 600 83rd Ave NE, in the west parking lot. The number of volunteers determines how much time it will take to walk from 4th Street N, east to San Martin Bridge. It’s never taken over an hour. If we get enough volunteers, we will also pick up around Riviera Bay Park as well.

I want to Thank Toni Michalove, Randi Langas, Dave Kandz and Donna Hoover for helping on Aug 9th for our 3rd out of 4 Clean-ups this year. They collected 26,2 Lbs, which kept 3.6 Lbs of Plastic, 2.2 Lbs of Aluminum, 3.8 Lbs of Glass & 1.3 Lbs of Misc Metal out of the landfill. Every little bit helps.

Boy Scout Troop 263 “Scouting For Food” Drive - Sat, Nov 8 at 9am

Holy Family’s Boy Scout Troop #263 has always helped us whenever we’ve asked, so let’s all

get together and help them on Nov 8th. Scouting for Food is a project rooted in the very foundation of the Scouting movement and its dedication to do a good deed daily.

On Sat, Nov 1, a week before pickup, the Scouts will be placing grocery bags on your doors. Please fill the bags with non-perishable food items and place it back on your doorstep on Saturday, November 8 by 9 am. Last year they filled a pickup truck, just from our neighborhood. Let’s fill 2 trucks this year. Clean out those closets and buy non-perishable food to give if you can. For more information, please contact Troop 263 Scoutmaster Chuck Charzan at [email protected] or 727-563-0641.

To alert you ASAP of important info that

would affect your way of life here, the neighborhood needs to set up an email blast. For instance, there has been a rash of car break-ins and burglaries going on in the RBHOA neighborhood to our east, and I could only warn about 10 houses in that area. We tried to set up an email blast before, but a lot of the emails that were supplied with membership forms came back as undeliverable.

Don’t worry, we won’t fill your inbox with numerous emails. Hopefully we may only have to send you one email a month, but we would never send you more than one email a week, unless it was really urgent news you and your family needed to know asap. Your email won’t be sold to anyone and you’ll be able to opt-out whenever you wanted to.

For now, please send us the current email you’d like us to use to [email protected]

Calling all VolunteersSat, Sept 27th

We will be meeting in the St Pete Presbyterian Church parking lot, 600 83rd Ave NE at 8AM.

We will be revisiting our past CareFest house on 84th & Tobay to get the scrubs under control and re-mulch and depending on the number of volunteers, we would like

to work in the Riviera Bay Park “Community Garden” re-mulching, weeding and dead-head the roses, also pick up around the park. If interested in helping, email [email protected] for details.

The city invites everyone who participated to come back to Lake Vista Rec Center at 1401 62nd Ave

S for volunteer recognition by the Mayor, lunch and entertainment starting 11:30 am. (Directions: 275 south to exit 16, left onto Pinellas Point Drive S/SR687E for 1.7 miles, Lake Vista Park is on the left (about 25 minute drive time).

SCHOOL BUS STOP CHANGE Pinellas County Schools has decided to relocate the Riverside Drive NE bus stops back to the area by Riviera Bay Park, stopping on Macoma Dr NE & 82nd Ave NE Any questions, contact Jack Pisecco - Route & Safety Pinellas County Schools - (727)547-7100 ext 4778 - [email protected]

NEED ADDITIONAL CHRISTMAS EVE CANDLE DISTRIBUTORS Christmas Eve will be here before you know it. We have had several of our long time candle distributors move out of the area and some of our other volunteers cover a large area and could use a helper. Please consider becoming a volunteer in this long standing RBCA tradition. Please call Jean Tyack for details 727-576-9300.

THE UKRANIAN CHURCH HALL AT 434 9OTH AVE N IS HAVING A HUGE RUMMAGE SALE ON SEPT 12 & 13, 8am to 2pm The entire hall where most of us go to vote will be full of reasonably priced items. Everything from clothing, books, towels, plates, furniture, games, jewelry, DVD/CDs, tapes, etc. They also take donations so please consider them after your yard sale.

UNLICENSED/UNINSURED WORKERS Some folks have been coming around our neighborhood, asking for jobs trimming trees and hedges or doing other yard maintenance tasks. While it may seem harmless to let these folks do some odd jobs, be aware that you are not dealing with a licensed/insured company, so you would be responsible for any injuries that these persons might incur while performing work for you. It’s your decision, but carefully weigh the risks vs. the perceived benefit. The Police have also said that this is how some criminals “case the neighborhood” to see who’s home, who has a dog, work schedules, etc.

STOLEN SHOPPING CARTS I thought the problem with stolen shopping carts being left in the neighborhood had been eliminated after we identified the people responsible and we had the Police talk to them. But it is starting to happen again. If you see someone stealing/pushing a shopping cart inside the neighborhood, please call the non-emergency Police line at 893-7780 and report it. The store will pick their carts up if you call them, but it may take a week or longer before they actually pick them up. If we can identify the person responsible, the association, or me personally, will buy them a fold-up cart of their own that they can take home and use for the same purpose.

RIVIERA BAY PARK Because of residents- feedback, the tennis court benches have been repaired and the city is considering shading the workout equipment area. Supporting emails can be sent to Councilman Kennedy at [email protected]. Also, please be considerate of others in the park, discard your cigarette butts in the trash containers. Several people have voiced their concerns about the amount of cigarette butts around the kids play areas.

The “You Too Can Recycle Cigarette Butts” Program is a program to collect and recycle Cigarette Butts

in Pinellas County. The following are the reasons why we all should be involved in this recycling effort . 1. Cigarette Butts are the number one litter item in Pinellas County. They are on our beaches, in our parking lots, at our bus stops and most of all in the middle of our street at left hand turn lanes. 2. Rains wash them into our coastal waters where the young marine life consume them and die. 3. Some Cigarette Butts end up in our landfill when birds consume them and die/ 4. Based on a recent study, it cost $ 4.17 (value of volunteer Time) for every cigarette removed during a cleanup of the beach. The program motto is “Please don’t Flick It, recycle it!” The program is to encourage everyone to collect cigarette butts for recycling and Keep Pinellas Beautiful will pick them up and deliver them to the Recycler (NO More Butts).

To make this recycling program work and include all sources for cigarette butts, Keep Pinellas will be providing the following three basic components, as needed to support the program. 1. Cigarette Butt Receptacles – also called Ash/Waste receptacles We have designed an inexpensive Cigarette Butt disposals containers for businesses (outside collection) Beach participates will like them because they can easily be secured to wood walkways to the beach.Click here for more information... 2. Cigarette Butt Disposal Container – This item was designed for inside collection of cigarette butts from businesses. It has the same base as the Cigarette Butt Receptacles. Click here for more information... 3. Cigarette Butt Collection Container. This Cigarette Butt Collection Container will be place throughout Pinellas County at various public businesses. A listing of those locations will be on the web site (www.Mykpb.com) under Recycling, then click on “You Too Can Recycle”. This listing will be
