2014-2015
Dear Parents and Guardians, !Redmond School District has updated its elementary report cards this year. This is part of our goal to provide be>er and increased informa?on to parents about student progress. Our new and improved Student Informa?on System (Synergy) will enable parents to have on-‐line access to their child’s informa?on (a>endance, report cards, grades, etc.). See the last page of this handbook for details about the schedule for implemen?ng ParentVUE at the elementary level. !Our new report card is based on the Common Core State Standards in Mathema?cs and English Language Arts and priority learning standards in all other subject areas at each grade. Standards describe what a student should know and be able to do at each grade level in all subject areas. This standards-‐based report card is helpful in many ways. First, it helps to ensure consistency of expecta?ons from teacher to teacher. Second, it provides a clear focus for
learning and a means for tracking and communica?ng progress. !
!!Finally, this report card will provide you with in depth feedback on what skills and concepts your child has mastered and where addi?onal prac?ce is necessary to ensure that your child is ready for the next grade level. !The report card is based on a five-‐point grading scale. A grade of 5 (i.e., advanced) means that your child has exceeded the grade level expecta?on on a specific standard. A grade of 4 (proficient) means that your child is mee?ng the grade level expecta?ons on a specific standard.
Grades of 3 (developing) and 2 (emerging) mean your child has not yet met grade level expecta?ons on a specific standard. A grade of 1 (beginning) means that your child is well-‐below mee?ng standards due to academic achievement or lack of evidence (e.g., missing assignments). The report card also provides informa?on about your child’s learning-‐ready skills, called, CharacterisGcs of a Successful Learner. !This Parent Handbook includes a sample of the report card, a descrip?on of proficiency levels, and an overview of what your child will be learning at their specific grade level with respect to the Common Core State Standards. !Please feel free to contact the Execu?ve Director of Academic Programs (541-‐923-‐5437) if you have ques?ons or concerns.

Preparing Oregon Students For Life After High School Oregon is committed to providing a quality K-12 education for all students, regardless of where they live or which school they attend. That’s why our public schools are working hard to implement college and career-ready standards, known as Common Core, which are clear expectations for what every child should know and be able to do at each grade level. Now, we are using new tests aligned to our higher standards that will measure the real- world skills our students need to be successful in the 21st Century.
Teachers helped develop the test. Thousands of K-12 teachers from around the country worked together to develop the tests. To date, more than 250 Oregon teachers have been involved in developing the new tests, known as the Smarter Balanced assessments.
The tests have been tested. 21 states and over 4.2 million students field tested the new assessments last spring. This practice run helped ensure the accuracy and fairness of Smarter test questions for all students. In Oregon, over 24,000 students participated in the field test.
