After more than a month of preparations, RCHoly Spirit and partners held the Tree Plantingand Shoreline Clean-up Drive on August 30,

2015 at the Las Pinas-Paranaque CriticalHabitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA), acoastal wetland and bird sanctuary in the me-tropolis. It was done in cooperation with Cari-tas Novaliches and the Department of Envi-ronment and Natural Resources (DENR) Na-tional Capital Region.

LPPCHEA  is the first criticalhabitat to be declared in thecountry. It covers 175 hec-tares of wetland ecosystem. It has been designated by theDENR as the country‟s sixth

Wetland of International Im-portance  because of the“critical role it plays in the sur-vival of threatened, restricted-range and congregatory birdspecies.” Around 82 wild birdspecies are found inLPPCHEA, 41 of which aremigratory. LPPCHEA con-sists of two (2) islands – Free-dom Island and Long Island. The tree-plantingactivity initiated by RC Holy Spirit was con-ducted in Freedom Island.

A total of 505 seedlings and saplings of trees(Mangkono, Kamuning , Banaba.  Aguho  andMolave) were planted by over 250 Rotariansand family members, Rotaractors, Interactorsand advocates of environment protection. They were given technical briefings by Mr Rey Aguinaldo, Focal Person, Critical Habitat &Ecotourism Area, and by Mr Caloy Gubat, LayCoordinator, Environmental Protection Pro-gram, of Caritas Novaliches. Mr Gubat hadretired from the DENR.

Along with the planting came the challenging

task of cleaning up the shoreline that wasteeming with all sorts of garbage. The hot and

Mangkono – ( Xanthostemon verdugonianus is a species of plant inthe Myrtaceae family. The species is endemic to the Philippines and is known to havea very limited habitat. It is indigenous only within the so-called„Mangkono Triangle‟ area, consisting of the Dinagat Island inSurigao, the Homonhon Island in Samar, Babatngon, Leyte, and

in Palawan.Mangkono is a medium sized-tree reaching a diameter of 50 cmor more with a very irregular, fluted and bent bole.

Known to be the hardest Philippine hardwood species. Becauseof its inherent hardness and high density, Mangkono has longbeen recognized as a substitute for the world famous Lignumvitae (Guaicum officinale L.). Mangkono is an excellent materialfor the bearing or stern bushing of a steamship‟s propeller shaft. Its other uses are as rollers, shears, saw guide blocks, tool han-dles, novelties, poles and piles for wharves and bridges, and

posts for houses.Status: Rare and Endangered

Kamuning – (Murraya paniculata). Kamuning isa tropical, evergreen plant native to southern China, Tai-

wan, the Indian sub-continent (i.e. India, Nepal, north-

eastern Pakistan and Sri Lanka), south-eastern Asia (i.e.

Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia,

Malaysia and the Philippines) and northern Australia (i.e.the northern parts of the Northern Territory, far northern

Queensland and northern Western Australia), bearing smal

white, scented flowers, which is grown as an ornamental

tree or hedge. Murraya is closely related to Citrus, and

bears small orange to red fruit resembling kumquats, though some cultivars do not set fruit.

    Aguho - Casuarina equisetifolia

Casuarina equisetifolia  is an evergreen  tree  growing to 6 –35 m (20 –115 ft) tall. The foliage consists of slender, much-branched green togrey-green twigs 0.5 –1 mm diameter, bearing minute scale-leaves  inwhorls of 6 –8. The flowers  are produced in smallcatkin-like inflorescences;  the male flowers in simple spikes 0.7 –4 cm long, the female flowers on short peduncles.  Unlike most other speciesof Casuarina (which are dioecious) it is monoecious, with male and fe-male flowers produced on the same tree. The fruit  is an oval woodystructure 10 –24 mm long and 9 –13 mm in diameter, superficially re-sembling a conifer cone made up of numerous carpels each containinga single seed with a small wing 6 –8 mm long.

Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa) Banaba is a medium-sized tree which grows up to30 meters in height and about 40 centimeters indiameter at breast height.

Banaba is widely distributed in the Philippines. It

can be found in the Batan Islands, Northern Lu-zon, Palawan, and Mindanao. Specifically, it canbe found along riverbanks, swamps, and in moistforests of alluvium soil in secondary forests at lowand medium altitudes.

Due to the tree‟s dense and wide spreading root system, Banaba is used for erosion control. The treehas been used in reforestation of degraded hills in Java. It is  cultivated for ornamental purposes and aa roadside tree.

Traditionally, banaba is a popular medicinal plant. Its dried bark and dried leaves are used for the

preparation of medicinal tea against kidney trouble. Extracts obtained from boiling its bark is used as adrink to induce alertness, reduce fever and to cure abdominal pains.

Bark soak in water can be taken to stop diarrhea. The bark leaves and flowers are used to induce bowmovements or loosen the stool. Old leaves and ripe/dried fruit, taken like tea, reduce blood sugar.

Leaves boiled in water are taken to clear obstructions from the natural ducts of the body and induce urnation. Extracts from boiling the roots are used against small ulcers of the mouth. A leaf poultice is useto relieve malarial fever and applied on cracked feet.

Molave - Vitex parviflora is a species of  plant inthe Verbenaceae family, known as smallflowerchastetree,[1] or  molave tree. It is found in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It is threatened by habitat loss.

Molave is a medium to large tree attaining a diameter of 100 to 15centimeters and a height of 25 to 30 meters. In exceptional casesit reaches a height of 35 meters or more and a diameter of 200centimeters with a bole from 16 to 20 meters.

Molave, being one of the hardest woods, is used in railroad ties,ship-building, wagon-making, bridges, cabinet, carabao yokes, cog-wheels, inserted cogs, saltwaterpiles, plane stocks, sugar mills, sculpture, and carving wooden tools, tool handles, novelties, agricul-tural implements, and high-grade construction where strength and durability are required.

Leaves are used as fodder. It is resistant to fungal, termite, and lyctus beetle attack, but not to marineborers.

Its wood and bark have curative effects on wounds and poisonous bites. The leaves are used to feedcattles, carabaos, and goats, especially during the dry season when rangelands are somewhat barren.Wood extract is considered a good remedy for poisons, as a dose of it will induce vomiting. There was once a strong young man whowas offered a job as a woodcutter. He setabout his task with energy: The first week,he turned 18 trees into firewood. The sec-ond week, he worked just as hard, but was

surprised to find he had chopped only 11trees. The third week, despite working non-stop from morning till night, the numberwas six, and he went despairingly to theforeman to offer his resignation. "I am los-ing my strength. I can no longer cut as

any trees as I once could."

e foreman looked at the young man, who seemed to him ine health. "Have you thought of sharpening your ax?" he asked.

harpen my ax? Who has time to sharpen an ax?" the youngan asked indignantly. "I have been too busy chopping wood!"

hen we aren't making the kind of progress we feel we should

making, the natural response is to redouble our efforts.ometimes, though, the better response is not to work harder,t to work smarter. Look at your tools. Analyze your processes.e you directing your resources in the most effective ways? Ore you pouring all your strength into chopping wood with a dull?

r the last 20 years, we have relentlessly beaten the drum ofembership in Rotary. We set goals and launch campaigns, allcused on bringing in more and more members. And yet, ourerall numbers remain the same.

s time to sharpen our tools. Instead of focusing on the ques-n, "How can we bring more members into Rotary?" we should

asking ourselves, "How can we add more value to Rotary

embership, so that more will join and fewer will leave?"

ne way we are doing that is with the new Rotary Global Re-ards program, which launched in July. This innovative programows Rotarians to connect with, and receive discounts and con-ssions from, businesses and service providers around the

orld. Individual Rotarians may submit their own business to becluded alongside those with which Rotary has already negoti-ed relationships; the most appropriate offers will be added toe listings. We have also created the option of allowing busi-sses to return a percentage of their profit on each transactionour Rotary Foundation, and several companies have alreadyen locked into this part of the scheme. Each month we willdate the list with additional offers that we may receive. I urge

of you to try it out by signing up on My Rotary at Rotary.orgw. The more Rotarians participate, the stronger, and moreneficial, the program will be.

uch more than another loyalty program, Rotary Global Re-ards is a new way to benefit from being a Rotarian, and beingrt of the Rotary network. It is another way to combine businessd service. And it is yet another way to add value to Rotary

embership. We cannot forget that our potential members willasking themselves, "What's in it for me?" We need to demon-

ate the value of Rotary by showing that becoming a Rotarianwill enrich their lives, as it has ours.

It raised US$247 million for that purpose in the first tyears, and it then joined forces with the World Health Orga

Now we are in the final days of this heroic effort, and it is imtant for Rotary that the entire world is made aware of its cbutions as a major partner in the eradication battle. Rotarternational and The Rotary Foundation will do everything can to publicize Rotary's role, but that is only one piece opuzzle.
